Before they committed to Miller, the Blazers made a strong push for Lee, a power forward. On Tuesday night, Blazers coach Nate McMillan and front-office executives Kevin Pritchard and Tom Penn had dinner with Lee in Las Vegas to make their recruiting pitch.

One source said the Blazers offered Lee a variety of options, including an opt-out clause that would have made him an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2011.

But the Knicks and Portland could not agree in discussions Thursday on any kind of a sign-and-trade deal, and the Blazers did not want to risk losing Miller over the seven-day waiting period had they chosen to use their cap space to tender an offer sheet to Lee, which New York would have had the right to match.

Lee, attending Team USA's mini-camp in Las Vegas, confirmed the Tuesday night recruiting meeting and said he was intrigued by the possibility of playing for Portland, although he never thought a deal was close.

"At this point it's going to come down to sign-and-trades vs. trying to get something worked out with New York," Lee told ESPN.com. "Sign and trades, with base-year and compensation and all that stuff, can get complicated. But I think there's enough teams out there that we've had contact with that are excited about trying to get something done that it's a possibility we can do it."

Fawk... although, no mention on what we would have gotten in return, so, I'll retain my "Fawk" for another day.

Sorry folks, doesn't seem like anything came of it.
The "other" deal I referred to last night was for David Lee in a sign-and-trade. That fell through this morningabout 1 hour ago from web in reply to akeippela
http://twitter.com/chadfordinsider

Andre Miller signing confirms that. Portland has maybe 2M in cap space left. Don't see them trading us 8M of their assets for 10M of Lee just to fill up their cap. They especially aren't going for Hinrich in that proposed 3-way rumor either now that they got Miller.

Oh well.. Knicks continue to wait.

Well, I guess that's 3M of their assets since Lee is BYC and worth half his salary if we do this? These things are confusing, but, I think that's the play here...if Portland still wanted to S&T for Lee, they can. They give him 10M, He's worth 5M BYC, They give us back 5M but have 2M in space to absorb some play, so all we "need" to take back is 3M of anyone they have.

I think doing that puts them over the cap though by the BYC difference...since instead of 8 we take back 5 - so then they're over by 5.

Eh, someone else do this math, I've had enough of this garbage.

Again, until other FA situations - and players who are on the block situations - are settled? We have NO reason to act on Nate and Lee - and neither does any other team.

So, the waiting goes on. That's fine. It's still July here. We have plenty of time to figure this out. No rush no hurry no locking up money in someone that can't carry the team to victory.

I don't know what to tell you. Hill finally looked good in the Washington game - looked pretty lost the rest of the time.

I suggest you check the boxscores and make a decision based on that.

I liked the Memphis and Bulls games personally. Not really any given reason I just did. But I suggest you do the Washington game to get a look at Hill at his best I suppose. Not too high on the guy but that's a different story altogether.

If they actually feel this way than that's pathetic. These guys have NO market - NONE. Buncha friggin babies.

well this article's just trying to kick up some s**t. but honestly isn't it reasonable that they'd both feel more than a little anxious right now about what's happening with them?

Anxious is fine Marv, but disrespected? Like the Knicks owed them something when they've never won more than 32 games in a season? C'mon man..

well, they've both improved each year of their careers, they both, despite certain limitations, do bust it nearly every night and did just deliver 16/12/2 and 18/4/4. and then your team lets you dangle. while it all gets played out on the most public platform possible?? now i agree 100% with how donnie's running this, but i think that "disrespected" would be a reasonable feeling. if they even said it. marbury probably told berman they feel that.

In this is why (reference my big last post on that page) I feel they are scrutinized so much.

Then just add in what I sad above about better options still available.

And I think you can come to a logical conclusion (at least in my universe) as to why they have been left dangling out there in the wind.

It's business it's not personal and Lee's agent has made it personal and Lee seems a bit too full of himself lately.

Again, if they were so great that they had to be retained at all costs, they would have been and would have had other teams fighting us for them. That hasn't happened.

The reasons are quite clear to me as to why.

Nearly every team in the league is gearing up for 2010 free agency. But based on terms of the collective bargaining agreement, which is designed for teams to retain assets, there are a few million reasons why LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh will opt to remain with their current employers. Previous reports estimated the Cavaliers, Heat, and Raptors would be able to offer their franchise cornerstones extensions worth $30 million more than any other team. Sam Smith, writing for Bulls.com, calculates the difference under a declining cap:

The rub is the new NBA economics. The key is the salary cap and luxury tax set in the summer of 2010. Even NBA commissioner David Stern already has said publicly the cap and thus the luxury tax threshold could be down as much as 10 percent next summer.

If the cap drops 10 percent (two percent decline expected this July for next season), the cap is about $52.6 million. For players going into their seventh season at that point, like James, Wade and Bosh, a max player can receive a top offer of 30 percent of the team’s salary cap if he changes teams. That would be about $15.8 million to start. The raises would be eight percent annually in a five-year deal for about $91.5 million.

A player who elects to stay with his own team for a similar max offer would be eligible for a six-year deal (instead of five) starting at $17.4 million (10.5 percent above their final season). The annual raises would be 10.5 percent instead of eight. That contract would total $132 million.

So if Bosh or Wade or James were to stay with their own teams-assuming the Stern predicted salary can decline-and get a max deal they would be able to sign contracts for $132 million compared with about $91.5 million.

http://ballerblogger.com/2009/07/06/declining-cap-could-put-the-sqeeze-on-class-of-2010/

Not this again..... *sigh*

The max contract is based off of a percentage of the cap. The cap could drop 5M it won't change a thing because a max contract is still a max contract and cannot be more. The lower the cap the lower the max contract number. That lower max contract number will still fit a team who is under the cap to afford a max contract. When that team is under the cap for a 2009 max contract, and the cap drops, they will still be under the cap for a 2010 max contract.

Why this is completely ignored is beyond logic.

But it's just like saying CLE can offer LeBron 30M more.....completely ignoring that it is six years instead of five and the actual number is more like 5-6M - something he easily recoups through endorsements in a bigger market.

But, whatever, the sky is falling I suppose. Let's undo the Crawful and Zachass trades and re-sign Marbury!

I think we're gonna see some weird, finance related decisions throughout all sports over the next little while.

MAybe, but keep an eyes on the upper-echelons of soccer. Spending like its going out of style in a big way!!

Am I mistaken or did Renaldo not just get inked to a gigantic 9 figure contract - but - the right to sign him also bore a 9 figure purchase fee payable to his old team?

Is that correct?

As to sports I think PhilinLA might have a point - if you look at this upcoming years' team salary list....you'll notice a drastic reduction in the top team salaries.

Of course, once we add Douglas, Hill, and either retain or S&T Lee and Nate - we'll probably be near or right back on top, yet, it's interesting.

Just a note, Hoopshype isn't always that accurate. Just a guide.

Chandler, Curry, Gallinari and Jeffries, are the only players the Knicks are obliged to pay (if all options are picked up, as expected) in 2010-11: $23.6 million in all.

Add Hill's and Douglas' rookie-scale contracts ($3.3 million combined) and that's a $26.9 million cap total, nearly half of the anticipated $50 million-plus cap for that season.

Lee and Robinson would gobble up much of that room, which is why Walsh said his ability to re-sign both likely will depend upon whether he can unload a salary. Although he didn't cite anyone, start with Jeffries and Curry.

.
.

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/knicks/49353967.html

.
.
.

Lee wants about 10, Nate about 7 - lets assume that. That means we're committed for 44M of our 50M cap in 2010-2011. Who do we sign for 6M the summer of 2010? Not any max FA I know of....

Can the Knicks afford Lee (at as much as $10 million per season) and/or Robinson (possibly $6-7 million) and occupy precious 2010 cap space they'd like to spend on one or more free agents?

"Yes," Walsh said, "but I don't know what those numbers are going to be yet."

Also to mention Rubio's 6.6M buyout, something we can only give 500K towards. He doesn't have that money. So then what, we torch two lotto picks (5 and 8) into the #2, and end up with no player this year? And ZERO guarantee that he would ever come over here? Please....please no. We cannot afford to do this.

There was a sac bee article on the reduced buyout agreement.

http://www.sacbee.com/kings/story/1965394.html

A hard number would be nice so teams know what they are dealing with. So would a guarantee he'd actually come to the states. We've seen it before with enough Euro's as apparently they are under no binding agreement to actually come play in the NBA after they are drafted.

Imagine grabbing #5, packaging it with #8 to land #2, selecting Rubio, and never seeing him or having him come over and be mediocre? Then watching #5 and #8 blow up on the Grizzles? Please no.

Yikes!

Ricky Rubio now must deal with the Spanish government if he wants to play in the NBA.

The guard has been trying to get out of his contract with Spanish league team DKV Joventut but has met resistance. On Tuesday, according to the Spanish news agency EFE, Rubio sued the team after learning that it had transferred the rights to his buyout to Hacienda, the Spanish version of the Internal Revenue Service. The rights were sold to satisfy a debt Joventut had with Hacienda.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4246467

this guy seems to be all drama.

Why is he drama? His buyout situation is absolutely ridiculous - he has to pay the team 6million bucks to play in the NBA, yet he only earns $175,000 next year if he stays.

how many 16-17 year olds in any place in the world make 90k a year at their first job and get double that the next?

6 Mil is insane though. These things are how euro teams guard against losing talent though. You can't trade players like in the NBA so you put up buyouts as a way to retain a player and discourage another team from trying to grab him.

6 Mil...again, is something I have NEVER heard of. It's usually in the .5-2M range if I recall previous players. Sadly, NBA team are only allowed to put up as much as 350K (or is it 500K now? I think it might be) towards a buyout of an international player. The rest is on that player.

So you know what? Rubio does not have 5.5M (all due right then and there as one giant lump sum) to win his freedom.

Yet, back to the player's intelligence on this, why would you sign such a contract with such a clause in it? Now you suddenly have regrets? Know what? Tough titties.

You sign a binding contract you are bound to that contract and made to fulfill it. I can't cry for someone that suddenly has regrets after probably grinning ear to ear the day he signed into it.

Now, he is young, and being young and dumb and full of, well you know, you can make mistakes. Yet, that is an awfully big one.

Guess what, Rubio, you should have just kept your mouth shut, forgot about the potential big bucks in the NBA (you know he sees a rookie contract can lead to a max contract if you're a star, and lets fast facts, this is what it is all about), and manned up and finished out your contract and THEN made yourself available for the NBA Draft down the road.

Yet, no, now he has completely screwed himself, he now can't play basketball, is property of the Spanish government.... What a disaster. It's his doing though so you can only question how this is possible in Spain but you can not rip on it for it is law. Law that should be known by a player's agent.

Tears I will not shed over that.
