I wonder if the Sixers will make a move to trade Okafor now?

Pompey is the beat writer for the Sixers. He published this tonight just before 7:00 pm. Sounds like this wasn't expected.

76ers general manager Sam Hinkie talked about the coming offseason before Tuesday's victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, and he said this summer "will feel different."

"It will feel different by the number of young players that are added to our team, the number of players out of the draft, and even the vibe around our team in free agency will have a different type of feel," Hinkie said.

The Sixers have around $24.5 million locked up in guaranteed salaries for next season, so they can go after top-notch free agents this summer. The salary cap for NBA teams could reach at least $90 million next season.

And while the 10-68 Sixers probably aren't a desired destination for A-list free agents, Hinkie remains hopeful.

"I think the best players in the world have great options," Hinkie said. "They will continue to, and they will choose what's best for them. But I think we will be able to provide opportunities for guys that will be interesting, too."

The Sixers will also have the best chance to get the top draft pick after securing this season's worst record. They have a 25 percent chance to get the top pick and a 64.3 percent chance to finish in the top three. The Sixers cannot finish lower than fourth.

They would also get the Lakers' pick if Los Angeles falls out of the top three in the lottery. The Sixers also have first-round picks from the Miami Heat (22nd overall as of Tuesday) and Oklahoma City Thunder (27th overall).

"There are a lot of options to be open to," Hinkie said. "I'm not sure what we are going to do. It's way too early."

The NBA draft is June 23.

In a letter to members of the Sixers' ownership group, obtained by ESPN.com, Hinkie wrote: "There has been much criticism of our approach. There will be more. A competitive league like the NBA necessitates a zig while our competitors comfortably zag. We often chose not to defend ourselves against much of the criticism, largely in an effort to stay true to the ideal of having the longest view in the room.

"... Given all the changes to our organization, I no longer have the confidence that I can make good decisions on behalf of investors in the Sixers -- you. So I should step down. And I have."

Interesting development.
I don't think there have ever been any Hinkie lovers here though.

If I had the motivation I would pull my thread from earlier this year. A horrible plan with no real end game. He sold ownership in a shame. When he dealt MCW I knew it was a horrible plan. Trading him in itself wasn't bad, it was the fact that he was trading his pick for a future pick, an endless delay. Anyone can collect assets but he was never going to build a team.

Wow...

Funny thing (unfortunate, for him) is that he accumulated all those draft picks and now someone else gets to benefit from using them.

Can't have much sympathy for him. Got to go to the Philly forum on RealGM later and see how the Hinkie sycophants are reacting.

Pretentious fellow, this Hinkie, to say the least.

Over at the Sixers RealGM forum, it is the end of the world as they know it, and as Brian Colangelo looms as Hinkie's replacement, Philly fans gear up for the apocalypse.
