This guy is petrified of contact, and is a brutal defender. He has a very good mid range jumper, and that is absolutely it. He doesn't bring anything else to the table, a complete waist of height and length. Wow..At 7 ft " and avg 18 mins pg, he's only block 2 shots, and is avg 2, rebounds pg.

In 16 games he's taken a grand total of 22 FT's and he shooting those at an impressive 87%,but he has taken less then 10 shots in the paint. Here's the crazy part, of all his shots in the paint, he was fouled 85% of the time.

He is a passive ass player, playing around a majority of passive ass players. He never cuts to the basket

The system doesn't help either, because it leaves him in mid range land with wide open shots, and no chance of getting a rebound or put back, plus no one penetrates on this team anyways...

On the defensive end, the philosophy hurts him even more. The knicks defensive scheme is to keep players out of the paint, our guards gamble all day to protect the paint, and leave there man open for 3's and back doors, that results in a lot of long or high rebounds, and he's never in position.

So i got to wondering how Luc longley (who i was comparing smith to) became such a solid piece in the triangle, and it comes down to having the right guards around him, ones like kobe, and jordan, that will make it there business to penetrate and not always settle for jumpers

This clip says it all,

ITs why he was an inexpensive pickup. HE fills a role. The system likes big guys that can take a mid range shot.
The system will have guys that don't get the offensive rebound because they are in position as an option.

He is who and where he is. But isn't Stats rebounds up? Isn't stats numbers improved because its not as crowded there?

FluTyson could not hit that shot and it was crowded around the basket.

I called Jason Smith out a couple of weeks ago right here: http://www.ultimateknicks.com/forum/topic.asp?t=48464.

I don't know whether to be disappointed in him individually (I agree--he's looked pretty darn one-dimensional out there) or blame the system which might be taking away from certain guys strengths and aggressiveness. For instance -- Shane Larkin -- I know he's small but this kid has pretty good scoring instincts going back to college. Are we fully exploiting that or is he basically relegated to simple ball-moving duties for the most part? Jason Smith -- I really thought this guy was capable of much more than what we're seeing on both ends. There are plenty of times where he's gotten the ball in good position in the deep post/high post where he hasn't even looked to take his man or make a move. Just seems overly concerned about setting a screen, handing the ball off and rolling for an open J. I mean is that it? Come on man -- I know the guy's not Olajuwon but he's got more offensive versatility than that, no? At least I thought so. Then why are we not seeing it? And yeah, why does his energy level appear to be so low? There's been plenty of times where he's had an opportunity to pursue a rebound, I'm talking really crash the glass, or pursue a block and he's just standing there, non-responsive. No idea what to make of that -- BigDaddyG pointed out to me that maybe it has to do with the fact that he's coming off his 2nd knee injury. OK maybe -- but would that account for the complete lack of aggressiveness we're seeing outta him at times? I dunno...

Well this was a Phil Jackson signing--a big who can shoot the perimeter shot for the triangle. Hes likely tentative after two major knee injuries--he was tougher in NO. He could be a good player--and maybe for another team--but not this one.

We have such a cluster fck of mismatches on our team with no one who can dribble penetrate--its bringing down the value of what is left over. So Far Phil has been as good a GM as Derek Fischer has been a coach. One is in LA tweeting go Knicks the other looks like he knows he stole 25mm and is trying to be quiet about it.

RIP Crushalot😞

He's a rental. Don't see how he is re-signed after this.

Fisher looks like the cat with the canary in his mouth. He's trying to keep it shut tight.

At one point after we got him, I was talking about Smith as if he'd be an automatic re-sign at the end of the year before he even played a game for us. Not anymore -- not the way he's played.

After the Cleveland game we were world champions, Travis Wear was defensive player of the year, Derek Fisher was possessed by the ghost of Red Holtzman, Jason Smith was a gun slinger and I was still a nice person.

Why on earth would someone overpay for a rookie coach is beyond me.
This MFer is clocking more money than: Thibodeaux, Vogel, Spolestra, Rick Carlisle, and not too far from Popovich. What ever happened to "Salary Commensurate with Experience?"
