Ariza happens to be in the midst of a contract year, but says that's not a factor.

"I think he's feeling pressure that way, yeah," Brown said. "I keep telling him, try to be like Bruce Bowen. ... 'I think you do what you do best.' He's 6-foot-8, athletic and long. It's a good message to try to rebound, defend and make hustle plays."

Ariza was playing a lot more like the rookie who won over the fans last season, making hustle plays and running the floor.

He came out early and had some nice hype.

The guys that don't put up numbers don't get the big bucks.

Bowen took a long time before he got his economic security. Reezy won't find big bucks waiting for him, but he has a long career ahead if he is smart.

He needs to stay in the league with "doing what he does best" then work on shooting. Thats how bowen stuck.

Bowen's a lot more physical defender than Ariza... Ariza's strengths are in his ability to run the floor, finish on the break & be a ballhawk on D... he needs to bulk up if he wants to be another Bruce Bowen.

I'd love Bowen if he were on my team but since he isn't I think he's a dirty player. I think he's gonna get concked but good before he's out of the league. Tripping guys, getting in cheap shots and stuff. Anybody else feel this?

Yes. He does take cheap shots. I remember seeing him blatantly stick his foot under Vince in one game, causing Vince to land on it and have a severe sprain.

Ray Allen does. [quoted about halfway down in this very amusing article]

i remember bowen and mike finley had a thing when mike was on the mavs. saw a replay, finley running downcourt, bowen runs up and bumps him hard but "accidentally," finley shoves him back, whammy that's a technical for mike. bet they're having fun in practice with teh spurs now.

Bowen plays good tough defence. I guess someone would say he's dirty if he could not get the shots they are acustomed of getting.. I would hate to play against hi

That's exactly what people said about John Starks - I'd love to have Bowen on my team, he plays hard and does what it takes to win.

Bowen is dirty. Gives guys fits.

But I loved that H20 used to light him up.

Ariza needs to focus on:
Man to man defense
rebounding
finishing around the hoop, because he can get there often.

He has shown no progress between this year and last. He should not be worried about a big payday, he doesnt have what it takes to get one just yet. He shold focus on gettin a small million dollar contract now with a player option in year 3, and work on his handle and jumpshot.

I was at one of those games. Thing of beauty. They eventually had Steve Smith come in to see what he could do and Houston had it much easier.
