The "evidence" strikes me as cirumstantial at best.

A player holds himself out of work-outs possibly due to injury.
Some writer speculates that its because he got an offer from Isiah, since you know, that matches his MO with Frye and all.
The notion gets "hyped hard" on realGM.
A New York Sports writer picks up on it, since you know, Zeke did the same thing with Balkman, and talks to one of Chandler's "people" who of course says yes the Knicks are interested along with seven other NBA teams. He's hot I tell ya.

Hey, we could pick the guy, but sorry if I'm not overwhelmed by the "evidence". Let me know if you have more.

Meanwhile the Knicks are still working out players and Isiah is probably just fine with everyone thinking he is going to pick yet another under-valued athletic forward with his late first round pick. Everyone who buys the evidence, that is.

It's evident to me--if we dont move that pick--we are taking Wilson Chandler.

That was a nice left hook that staggered me. I shrugged it off and have come back swinging and feel I have connected:)

Just funning you. It's draft time and every team is selecting the next great one. What are the chances that he throws a curve and take the Italian kid.

Really, anything is possible. Lot's of Italians in NY, would be a good PR move. I say Isiah shocks us all.
Still hoping we pick up an extra 2nd round pick, maybe use that for Chandler.

Wilson Chandler moved from 45 to 23 by NBA Draft Net tonight. Maybe there were a few loose lips from Wilson Chandler's side?

I saw that too. I attributed it to the Draftexpress people who are really good at what they do. Ford's mock has him going to the Knicks as well. His camp has all the appearance of a guy who got a promise so there is good credibility to the rumors. I find it interesting that teams are basically saying that Thomas guarantee him the pick because they want to bring him in to workout but he refuses. Spurs and Bulls are on record saying they want to see him. I think the Spurs were serious about taking him with their 28th pick versus second round pick. For whatever reason the Spurs are high on him and he doesn't get past them. I guess they are looking at taking a project SF with upside. I also see rumors of Fernandez dropping because of attitude problems he had a couple of workouts. McRoberts is dropping like a stone on most boards as well.

Knicks' draft mystery solved: Chandler's their man
June 21, 2007

Perhaps what we really needed to solve two of the draft's bigger mysteries was a very big magnifying glass, big enough to allow us to line up the two mysteries together.

The first mystery: What the heck will the Knicks do?

The second mystery: What the heck is Wilson Chandler doing?

Think about it for a second and … aha!

For the past week or so, there's been speculation about Chandler winding up with the Knicks with the 23rd pick in the draft, and now, a source says that is, indeed, what will happen. That would help explain a few things, starting with why Chandler has been declining to work out for other teams. He was a no-show in Philadelphia on Monday, a strange workout to miss for a player dying to get into the first round -- the Sixers own three picks in the first round, including No. 21 and No. 30. If he felt that he was on the fringe of the first round, Philadelphia would be the can't-miss showcase for Chandler. Obviously, Chandler feels he has a first-round slot sewn up.

Knicks president Isiah Thomas has been coy about his pick, but he has been hinting that it will be as much of a shocker as the choice of Renaldo Balkman with the 20th pick in last year's draft. Having already signed Kentucky big man Randolph Morris thanks to a rules loophole this spring, Thomas can afford to take a chance. He needs to win next year, but it's unlikely that he is going to get a difference-maker at 23. Might as well take a gamble. Chandler qualifies as such.

Most NBA personnel execs were surprised that Chandler, a sophomore from DePaul, entered the NBA draft at all. There was even more surprise when he stayed in, hiring agent Chris Grier. Now, the notion of him going No. 23 is the biggest of all surprises. "He has some potential, but he needed to go back to school," one general manager says. "I can't see him as a first-rounder."

Chandler (6-8, 230) averaged 14.6 points and 6.9 rebounds this year. He is a good athlete with long arms, and his potential to be a top-notch defender and rebounder at the small forward spot is undeniable. But he is very raw, still carries many offensive questions and is a long way from being a productive NBA player.

Still, it appears that he is the Knicks' man, and we'll be updating the mock draft here to reflect that. One thing we won't be updating is our slotting of point guard Mike Conley as the No. 4 pick, going to Memphis. We told you Monday that Memphis loves Conley's speed and is strongly considering taking him with the fourth pick, and that nugget has been confirmed by another source.

Everything I read about him suggests that he is Balkman without as high a motor but with slightly better shooting ability and strength. That's nice, but do we really need that when we have Balkman and Jeffries manning the SF position. Moreover, it is one thing to draft him but to make him a promise that we are taking him! How could we possible make this guy a promise with Morris, Fernandez, the italian kid, and Williams possibly being available at #23. This kid better be the second coming of Scottie Pippen or Shawn Marion if we draft him at #23.

This is the description of Chandler:

Chandler has impressive physical tools, with a great combination of strength and athleticism ... He can leap out of the building and create some highlight reel dunks ... He's a very smooth athlete with a knack for finishing ... Chandler has displayed an improving jump shot and his ball handling skills are slowly developing. As primarily a power forward on DePaul, he has developed some post moves and become a very strong rebounder ... His rebounding ability will set him apart from many small forwards a la Shawn Marion ... He is also a solid shot blocker who seems to be at his best defensively in the paint ...

Weaknesses: Chandler is listed height of 6-8 is very questionable, as he appears closer to 6-6 or 6-7. His intensity at times seems questionable, as he doesn't really seem to have the hustle attitude. Like most tweeners, he is not ready to play on the perimeter full time and lacks the quickness to defend top caliber wing players. His jump shot is still in the works, though it has improved, he has not shown the type of range necessary for an NBA small forward ... His shot selection seems very questionable at times, as he is too willing to jack up contested jump shots.

This is just one person's opinion but he does not sound like someone we should have made a promise to.

ISIAH just might lose out on his pick of Chandler.

Gm's in the league are raising their eyebrows on who Isiah chooses to look at very closely.

Him being in the media capital might work against him this yr, last yr he allegedly beat Phoenix to the punc by grabbing Balkman who they might have envisioned as a younger raw version of Shawn Marion.

Isiah better come up with a plan B this yr, NBA teams will watch his and see who he's intrested in from now on.

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

You make a good point but unless Chandler works out for other teams, it is highly doubtful anyone else is taking him before #23. There are too many questions marks surrounding him as far as his skillset and potential for a team to take him without working him out first. He is supposedly going to do some workouts before the draft, if that happens and he impresses, he might get drafted shortly before our pick, but I doubt it.

Draft Express podcast #5

- Two guys Knicks like the most are Cook and Sean Williams.

- Cook is a typical Isiah Thomas pick. He's a freshman, in a year or two could have been a lotto pick, big time upside, big time athlete, potential is off the chart. He's a shooter too, so he fits what Marbury wants.

- Morris Almond is a solid pick too, but he might be off the board.

- Wilson Chandler talk is BS. Those rumors are not true, he's not going at #23.

- No promises in the draft this year, from any team. (In 04 draft, teams were handcuffed. They saw Monta Ellis, Andray Blatche slip, and they couldn't do anything).

Someone posted this on draftexpress.

It doesnt fill our biggest need, which is a shooter, but maybe Isiah knows hes gonna be able to pull off a sign and trade Lewis and wants another rugged power forward if it costs us Frye or Balkman.

This is the only reason why picking a Chandler might make sense. If IT already has a trade lined up involving Balkman, we then would need another rebounding and defensive SF/PF. However, I would have to think that Williams or Cook would be better picks.

Another reason to draft him per Draftexpress.com is this ...

Not having scouted him all that seriously this past season (no one really expected to declare for the draft, let alone keep his name in), it was hard for us not to come away from watching his tapes recently feeling like he has more potential than anyone outside the top dozen names or so in this draft, and that we may have seriously slept on him these past few months.

The main attraction we found revolves around his unbelievable athleticism. Chandler runs the floor like a deer, with great quickness and big, long strides, being capable of getting off his feet for highlight reel caliber dunks with the great of ease, either in alleyoop fashion or for a thunderous putback dunk. DePaul in fact utilized a backdoor alleyoop play as a regular fixture in their playbook just for Chandler’s sake, and his guards knew that throwing the ball in his general direction around the rim would usually result in an easy assist.

Chandler is not a great finisher in terms of his post moves or finishing off the glass, something that gave us a great opportunity to check out his terrific second and third pogo-stick-esqe bounce off his feet for offensive rebounds, which would usually end up being converted in an eventual basket. Chandler is not quite as athletic as a super-freak dunk contest participant like Tyrus Thomas for example, but watching him on tape, he doesn’t really seem that far off either. Had he played for a program like LSU and made the Final Four the way Thomas did in 2006, we might be talking about him as a borderline lottery pick rather than as a borderline first round pick.

Going back to 1999, Weis on paper was a good pick - that was before numerous back injuries sapped him of NBA-level athleticism. He still went on to become a mild star in the euroleagues, along w/ Knicks would-be-PG-of-the-future Vujanic. But he was clearly a bust in the NBA because he never made it here after a post-surgery summer workout.

Had we not taken Weis, does everyone still feel bitter we didn't pick Artest? Granted, Artest is a beast of a player, but he's a load to deal with. How many coaches has he been through? He's on his 3rd team, and seems to manage to bring controversy with every word out of his mouth. And that doesn't take into account his personal problems. Perhaps the Knicks staff was right to put up a red flag about Ron-Ron. Awesome player, but a loose cannon. Perhaps too loose for any team to count on him, at least up to this point in his career.

Beyond that, who was picked in the neighborhood of the Knicks' #16 pick?
The next 3 picks were Cal Bowdler, James Posey, and Quincy Lewis. Posey's still around, but he's a shell of his former self for some reason. 8 picks later, Andrei Kirilenko (24) was available. Not too many notable players after Artest.

Regarding Chandler - he sounds a lot like Hakim Warrick.

if zeke could pull sean williams, develop, and keep would'nt hurt my feelings

but if zeke decides to go euro, marco belinelli may have a chance.

as you can tell i don't get excited over the draft

Technomaster - you be killin' me. Can you repeat that with a straight face?

Freddie ("dead, that's what I said") Weis only had NBA level athletic abillity in his dreams. The dude never averaged more the four points a game in (hold up) freakin' France.

There is no such thing as a good pick "on paper". The measure of a "good pick" can only be taken where it counts.... on a professional basketball court in the regular season, when the game outcome is on the line. Garbage time don't count.
