East Coast Workout Swing: Day 8 (Zabian Dowdell, J.R. Reynolds, etc)
May 29, 2007
Wyatt was tough to evaluate on the specific day that we were in the gym, as his ankle was clearly bothering him and he was trying to get it healthy in time for the pre-draft camp. It wasn’t tough to miss his athleticism, though, as he played above the rim for some impressive stretches of the workout and came away with a few extremely impressive offensive rebounds. Wyatt is quick off his feet but lacks some serious strength, showing a distinct lack of lower body mass that might hinder him from holding a spot on the block at the next level consistently. His jump-shot is very solid for a 6-10 player, though, and he splits time working out half the time as a small forward and half the time as a power forward. In the five on five he was extremely active in the passing lanes, using his length and quickness to the fullest, also to block or alter shots. His ball-handling skills need some serious work to fully maximize his athletic potential, though, as his dribble still looks fairly out of control in tight spots and he can’t consistently create his own shot from the perimeter. He also has a tendency to dribble the ball with his head down. Wyatt sat out a large chunk of the five on five due to his ankle, and never really seemed to get in the flow of things offensively once he did come in.

I wish they would've picked another player to compare him to tho Why jinx the guy before he even gets started?

NBA Comparison: Tim Thomas
Strengths: Extremely mobile player who runs the court like a guard … Great shot blocker who is an excellent help defender … Great body potential in that with added weight his mobility and athleticism will not be compromised … Offensively his skills are quite advanced … Mid-range shooting can extend out to 18 feet and hit with regularity … Shows soft touch on his shots … Although almost a dying art form Wyatt has the “Tim Duncan” bank shot in his face up game … Possesses three point range on his jumper … For his size he is a great ball handler capable of using cross overs to gain separation from his man … Tremendous out of position rebounder due to his long arms and foot speed … Defensively he has the physical tools to develop into a stopper: long arms, decent athleticism, quick hands and mobility … Smart player who has a high basketball IQ … Creates mismatch problems due to his versatility … Great finisher around the basket … Does a good job when getting the ball in the post of keeping the ball high and not putting it on the floor … Unselfish almost to a fault … Plays the game with good intensity and has a mean streak … Only played two years of organized basketball in high school has loads of potential …

Weaknesses: Wyatt’s most glaring weaknesses have to do with his lack of upper body strength and bulk … But to his credit he has improved greatly this past year … Poor free throw shooter … Doesn’t always get good position in the post as he tends to get pushed off the blocks … At times he tends to overthink his moves and hesitate giving his defender time to adjust … Needs to work on sealing off his man better when rebounding … Back to basket moves are still in need of refinement … Struggles to finish after contact when attacking the basket … Could stand to work on his timing as he tends to bite on pump fakes … Can be a little foul prone when guarding physical players in the post … To some degree Wyatt is a tweener who will need to decide on a position … Lacks strength body wise to play power forward and will need to work on perimeter defense at the small forward position … Some will naturally talk about his level of competition … But to his credit in two exhibition games played against division one talent Wyatt has averaged 30 PPG and 7.5 RPG …

6-10 and only 215 means he's a string bean and will need a lot of work to get bigger and stronger. I like what they say about his skills tho. If he's looking for a project with high potential he would seem like a good candidate.

Based on Zekes recent interview (where he talks of taking a risk/drafting a player he can develop), it does sound like he's gonna take another shot in the dark at a gem or bust type player.

Based on What Zeke said, the following are players I can see him drafting:

Avis Wyatt
Sean Williams
Deaquan Cook
Rodney Stuckey
Taurean Green

He looks like a solid skilled player and he seems to be a legit 6'10". However, he does not look quick enough to guard SFs and is not big enough to guard PFs in the league. If he can add 20 pounds of muscle to his frame without destroying his mobility, he looks like he could be a very good PF in this league. He seems to have a good presence on defense and understands how to protect the paint. I would rather take a chance on Williams, Cook, or Almond though.

I would put Jarvis Critterion way up on that list--way before Cook Green etc... He's got a LOT of potential and has already played very well. He is a 6-5 PG--not many of those and he went to the same school Steph did.

Why did draft net say he compares to Tim Thomas????I'm not saying he is going to be as good, but in that Video he played alot like the Big Ticket to me.

So did Tim Thomas at Nova. A big men that can take you off the dribble, play like a wing player and block shots. Thomas and KG were suppose to be the new breed of big men in the NBA. There was so much hype about whether Thomas would or would not enter the draft. Oh yeah, KVH was suppose to be in that crop as well.

Tim Thomas was a physical specimen from day 1 in terms of build. Anyone who is 6-10 with athletiscm skills etc.. can be considered a serious prospect. Some of them hit--some of them miss. I would much rather have a fundamental prospect this year like Almond. A big part of today's game is the ability to hit that 3 point shot--especially with our big man and this is the premeire 3 point shooter with perfect size for the 2 guard.

Here is a better question Briggs, if Isiah scores a second round pick and Williams is already gone but Lasme and Wyatt or still on the board do you take Lasme (you know what you are getting with him and he fits the system) or a project with high risk reward like Wyatt. While I really like Lasme, I would like to take a gamble on this kid with a second round pick. I would rather move Frye and Rose on draft nite to land two second round picks and select both.

This guy sounds interesting, but we need guys who can help right away. We should buy a 2nd round pick from someone for this guy.

Draft Projection: Second round to undrafted

Positives: Super athletic small forward with a decent jump shot. Explosive. Despite his size, plays almost exclusively facing the basket.

Negatives: Very, very thin. Lacks strength to play in the post. Raw.

Summary: Got a little buzz at the Portsmouth Invitational from NBA scouts, but he's a pretty big project and a reach for the second round. If he does get drafted, it will be because of his length and athleticism.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Nah, this guy plays defense. That adds to his value, ALOT. I think he is going to go in the first round. We need a three point shooter and a shot blocker. Am I the only one who sees this as a perfect marriage?

IT should be able to make a move for a second pick if he wants this guy. Video looks good, I'll agree with you on that.
