Defensively I just don't think he has the lateral quickness and reaction time to be a good defender. His weak body doesn't help either. Still he should be better than he's shown. I think it's assumed that scorers should be good defenders, but it doesn't work like that. When your on offense you have the advantage of knowing what you want to do, while the defender doesn't and has to react and anticipate. This is where it gets tricky. Some guys just don't have the natural anticipation that you need. There's also technique which Jamal could do a better job. Forcing his man towards help as he put it, is very important.

in this day and age (not just jamal but alot of players) don't take pride in defense. they don't say "i have to shut down my man". they're all talking about getting help and how you can't stop a guy. the mentality has changed regardless of the rules. the individual pride to actually contain their own guy is all but gone.

I agree with you but I dont blame the players. I think alot of this blame goes on the league and the officiating. If all you have to do is breathe on a guy nowadays and your thrown out of the game then how would you try to play defense? You wont, you will just practice getting your shot off as fast and as furious as you can.

I think the international set up with only two officials is awesome. Watching the olympics, the game flows so much better. In the NBA the whistle blows every 4 seconds, its ridiculous.

Junk Yard Dog had a quote about defense that appeared on knicks.com when he was with the team. He basically said his defense ability, which was above average, was nothing too special. All it was was heart, dedication, and intensity, which I believe is appropriate. Good defense is simply trying harder than the opponent. Great defense, that has more to do with God-given-ability. But good defense is something that comes from effort and the fruits of that effort.

Jamal puts no effort tin on defense, has yet to put any effort in on that end, and he stinks at it. He just doesn't care and would rather spend his offseasons playing Rucker style ball. And why should he care? He's a multi-millionaire that was made that despite his ****ty defense.

While I agree that you absolutely do need a Burning Desire to defend, let's not pretend that everyone can stop a super quick scorer when he wants to get by his man. That's why teams stress TEAM defense. It does start with the individual, but even at my age, I can still take younger guys off the dribble with enough space and no help.

For Jamal to defend guys he has to start with a consistent effort for 48 mins. This camp he has to really pay attention to defensive technique. Knowing how much distance he needs to give a guy to take away his drive, but still have a chance to get up into his shot. In addition he has to know where his help is at all times. It's not rocket science, so I don't know why this has been so elusive for him. For that matter the entire team as well. It's got to change for this team to have a chance to turn this around. We'll see what they do this year. My guess is that the team will give a better effort this year. I can't wait to see how that plays out.

Again, nobody has asked Jamal to be a shutdown defender. I'm personally asking the guy to play some defense, any defense. He plays none. His ability to run through a screen makes Allan Houston look like he should be running seminars on how to run through a screen. He's horrible. there is literally no effort. His mentality is that he will just get it back on the offensive end. A lot of people think this way, although they don't realize that this means they are constantly playing from behind
I just hope that people will like me

Ewing having multiple coaches and Craw are not the same comparison. Su, you're comparing apples and oranges, man. Ewing was a SUPERSTAR center in an age where centers dominated. The team had some winning seasons and was considered a top player from day 1. Crawford was not intended to be that guy, and had to since no one else could. He had not only multiple coaches, but really bad ones, on top of constant controversy. By the time Ewing was in his prime he not only had Patino who he won with, but with the two bad coaches afterward and even being one of the "50 greatest players" they could barely make the playoffs. In comes Riley, plus a style that FIT THE TEAM, in a defensive hard knocks game plan, and they never looked back.

i only brought it up b/c of this:
I was really close with Isiah and didn't know who would be coming to coach us and was pretty nervous about that. When I found out it was Coach D'Antoni, I didn't know what to do. I was so excited because that's the style of ball I like to play. This is the best chance I may ever have at proving I belong as an elite player.

so in his own mind, he thinks he is an elite player.

crawford was coached by skiles. he leaves to the knicks, and skiles has that team in the playoffs 3 years in a row.
marbury was coached by lenny. they made the playoffs. he comes to the knicks, the same coach didn't make it through the season.

skiles + lenny + larry were the last 3 coaches crawford had before isiah. he had good coaches. he just failed to change his game. he's said the same thing before. again, the guy seems like a good person. but the way he wrote this blog, it was almost passive aggressive. i know i have to do this BUT... i need to work on this BUT...

but forget about what he said. all i know is that with a coach like d'antoni, crawford will be allowed to shoot (something he likes to do) and he won't be asked to play defense, or at least won't be held accountable on that end of the court. so if there's a tailor made coach for crawford's game, it's d'antoni. now, will those inflated #'s mean crawford becomes a better player under d'antoni? i think we'll be able to tell this year.

this blog is something that should be written from a player who's entering his 3rd year in the league, not 9th. the point he has made about coaches tells me he views others as a reason for him not becoming elite, rather than himself.

i don't get where u think he already thinks he's an elite player from what he wrote in his blog... seems to me he's well aware of all his shortcomings in his game & is determined to work hard to correct them... i don't think he thinks he's an elite player, but he wants to be.

Running and fighting thru screens with his body isn't exactly an easy thing to do. I think he could try to fight harder, but I still think in the end that he wouldn't be as good as we would like. To be honest some guys have physical limitations. It's part of the reason many GM's had a problem with DJ Augustin. He can try as he might, but he's gonna have limitations.

I think most of us realize this and are just looking for a better and more consistent effort, but I try to be realistic about what I can expect from certain guys. I'd love for him to prove me wrong tho.

Jamal is not a good player plain and simple and his blog is garbage. He pretends to address his faults as a player and tries to make excuses with his 9 coaches in 9 years and all. If your a good player you can adjust no matter what the situation. If you shoot 40% and your'e 6'5" and have an unreal handle are super quick and have long arms you are hopeless.

He is great half the season and he is one of the worst players in the league for half the season. He can never find a common ground. Saying no one can stop anyone one on one maybe true, however if the scouting report calls you out defensively there is a reason.

The only thing that jamal does well is speak, you can't dislike the guy when he is interviewed he always says the right thing, he might be the dumbest genius in the entire nba, if he only played the way he spoke he would be a all star every season. If you can address all your shortcomings and know what they are why can't you improve them?

Man then he can learn alot from Rip Hamilton, same physique and IMO less gifted than Jamal. With his handle there is no reason why he cant take it to the hole or at least nearer to the hoop for a higher percentage shot. MS is right, i have been hearing this thing from day one. Nice guy but just doesnt get it. He had a one nice spell under Larry but that didnt last long. Under Isiah he was just plain out of control.

This is 100% spot on. Jamal has all the talent in the world to be a deadly scoring weapon, all he has to do is work hard for the right shot, a la Rip.

Rip Hamilton isn't weak, he's wiry. Some guys like Gary Payton are slim but strong. Jamal is WEAK and just doesn't seem capable of getting the kind of natural strength he needs to hold his own. Sometimes you're just genetically limited that way. Just like no matter how much you work out, you're not going to develop the same amount of fast twitch muscle as Nate has, which gives him his explosiveness. Some guys have amazing eye to hand coordination and quick reflexes and that's why they get a lot of steals.

Jamal to me should be better at playing team defense. He could get better at reading his man and anticipating moves. Part of that comes from forcing your man to his off hand or towards your help and clearly Jamal doesn't think the game of defense to that degree. If he does, then we'll see the improvement. Just like his offensive mistakes tend to come from a lack of thought. You've got to think 2-3 moves ahead and not just make things up as you go all night. This is what Mike shows his players. I'm hopeful that he'll be able to have success in getting Jamal to understand the game and how he can be most effective. It's still not too late!!!

You can learn how to improve your vertical, strength, quickness, shot, genetics are one thing, improvement is something that is entirely different. Jamal hasn't really added any new dimensions to his game since he has been here. He has been an major part of this team and since he has been here the knicks are playing their worst stretch in the history of the franchise....

Improvements you can make without even working on your game:
1. Setting your feet
2. Stop shooting off balance
3. Use your handle to attack the rim

Three simple things Crawford doesn't do. If you are playing playground ball and you believe you are trying things to work on for the upcoming season, you don't need to be blogging. Crawford is one of the dumbest players in the entire league, starts more fast breaks with his shoot selection and takes more off balance shots, he is down right frustrating. It's embarrassing he can't improve his % from the field......

Every season we have to hear how excited these ****ing guys are, hugging new coaches, saying this year is going to be different, just stop talking already

I would think that in Jamal's career he's likely only had one coach really challenge him to reign in his wild shooting and that was Larry Brown. It was the only thing I felt Brown did that had any kind of effect on the team. Still he didn't have a great year. His shooting percentages weren't as good overall as this last years. So I think Jamal could still find his game improve under a coach like Mike who I think will tune his game in just the right way to work well in his system.

I may be wrong, but I'm hopeful that this happens. From what i've seen of Jamal over the years it's clear that he's a much better shooter when he's used properly, but I think due to the poor use of the roster he's been miscast and plays that worked weren't used consistently enough to keep him locked in. Just think about how often Detroit uses the same play to great effect with Rip. We haven't done that in NY with Jamal. Instead they go away from using Jamal on curls and other successful plays that force him to take better shots. Isiah went with just calling Jamal's number at the top of the key which leads to And1 moves and bad shots.

I really believe that Mike will be a much more disciplined coach and that the team will benefit from much better execution. This is Jamal's last chance, but I have more faith this time that he'll get it done.

Well if Rip Hamilton wasnt a good example. How bout Reggie Miller. Ever seen how that guy fights and practically claws his way through screens? If you have shortcomings, you work your ass off to overcome it. If you have strengths then you use it. At the very least that will give you a respectable NBA career (IMO Crawford is borderline).

I respect your faith you have for him but for me, I dont know, maybe i'm pissed because everything you want him to improve, he actually did under Larry Brown, saved for the shooting avg (which was still better than his norm). He was playing undercontrol, dishing and takin it to the hole or the higher % shot. And he just plain regressed. Like I said i dont think its physical or desire, its just a mental thing, he doesnt get jack ****. That whats so frustrating about that guy. He's a 6th man for me if he doesnt improve, no more.

If crawford has a monster season he is going to get resigned. I think crawford is going tohave a big time season.

the funny part is i have a feeling a lot of the posters here will actively be rooting for Jamal to have a crappy season just because they don't want him to be re-signed... they'd rather see him have a typical season so they can continue ripping on the guy rather than see him raise the level of his game & see him be rewarded for doing so.

not really, its more like we hope he does well so that we can actually get something in return for him. its just we've heard this all before and he's still the same player.

I want him to have a good season because then he will opt out of the final 2 years of his contract. Then we could do a sign and trade for pick(s)/young player(s) or just let him go outright. Same with Chubby, have a good season, opt out of contract. Just means tons of cap space in 2010.

I really don't see the point in him having a great season and trading JC away. The GM and the coach want to win games in the next 2-3 years, and after JC/Danllio/Chandler what does this team have???

Crawford is already on the books for 10 million in 2010, if he has another 20plus 5-6 assist season, extending is the best option for the knicks. It takes pressure off of Danillo until he is ready and it lends to signing a FA in 2010, because that players is going to want to know he has help if he comes here. Gallo/Danillo in their 3/4 year and a second year draft pick probably won't do that.
