Just heard it on the fan. Along with Melky Cabrera and another prospect. Well, what's everyone think? We giving up too much? Any word on the 3rd prospect? Would Dan Haren be a more logically target?

I don't like it a bit. Hughes should be an untouchable along with Joba and Cano. The offer of Kennedy, Melky and another prospect was good enough for a player the Twins will lose anyway.

I really hate the fact that the Yanks haven't protected one of their best young pitchers.

The Twins may have reached the point where they have the best offers they are going to get from the Yankees and Red Sox for pitcher Johan Santana.

With the Yankees' offer now upgraded to include top young pitcher Phil Hughes, the Twins spoke again with the Red Sox late Saturday afternoon, sources say, and Boston generated a few new ideas for its proposed offer.

The Red Sox had been reluctant to include either outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury or pitcher Clay Buchholz in the deal.

The Twins have also been talking with the Mariners and Dodgers, among other teams, but with Santana in a position to steer the deal making with his no-trade clause, Minnesota may soon have to decide between the offer from the Yankees and Red Sox or consider the possibility of keeping Santana for the outset of the 2008 season -- although executives involved in these talks expect Santana to be traded.

There is only a certain level of patience for prolonged dialogue among the teams involved, and unless some preliminary trade agreement is settled, the Red Sox or Yankees could reduce their offer or pull out altogether within the next 48 hours.

If the Twins make a deal with New York, Yankees officials are confident they will sign Santana. And the club's internal plan, if center fielder Melky Cabrera is included in the trade, is to switch veteran Johnny Damon from left field back to center field.

Boston's offer on the table before Saturday's talks included pitcher Jon Lester, center fielder Coco Crisp and minor league infielder Jed Lowrie. A fourth player -- a minor league pitcher -- is to be determined. The Twins have wanted the Red Sox to add either Ellsbury or Buchholz to the deal, and there are indications that if the Red Sox add Buchholz or Ellsbury, theirs is the offer that Minnesota would prefer.

For now, however, the Yankees are right in the thick of the bidding, having decided in internal discussions on Friday to offer Hughes rather than Ian Kennedy intp their offer, along with Cabrera and a third player -- in all likelihood, a minor leaguer. The Yankees have told the Twins that the third player can't be any of their best young players -- Kennedy or Joba Chamberlain or second baseman Robinson Cano, for example, but a second-tier prospect.

Santana, 29, has a full no-trade clause, and could block any deal the Twins try to make. In return for waiving the no-trade clause, it's expected that Santana will want the Yankees or any other team attempting to trade for him to sign the left-hander to a record-setting contract. No pitcher has ever signed a multiyear deal for more $18.6 million per season, but Santana may ask for something in the range of six years and $150 million, in an extension.

The Yankees are operating under revamped leadership, with Steinbrenner sons Hank and Hal assuming a greater role, and to date, the sons have demonstrated a willingness to bid aggressively and splurge when they feel it's necessary to get a deal done.

For example: While the Yankees forced Alex Rodriguez to come to them without Scott Boras, they still gave him a record-setting raise. Many industry executives think the Yankees were in position to forced Rodriguez to settle for a deal in the range of $200 million-$225 million, but the Yankees signed Rodriguez to a deal that could be worth anywhere from $275 million to $305 million. And the Yankees gave veteran catcher Jorge Posada a fourth year in their offer, rather than limit their proposal to three years.

Damon, 34, battled injuries in the early part of last season and in his absence, Cabrera played center and so greatly improved the team's defense that when Damon was ready to return to the outfield again, Cabrera remained as the center fielder, with Damon moving to left.

As the Yankees have considered the alternatives in a Santana trade, they've determined to shift Damon back to center field, rather than to pursue one of the many free agent center fielders available -- someone like Aaron Rowand, Mike Cameron or Andruw Jones.

There is more pressure on the Yankees to acquire Santana or another veteran pitcher, because the projected Yankees' rotation, as of today, lacks experience, and because friends of left-hander Andy Pettitte believe there is a real chance that he is going to retire. The Yankees may not learn until late December or January about what Pettitte's plans are for 2008.

Those considerations may nudge the Yankees into adding Hughes to their offer for Santana.

The Yankees and Red Sox are also engaged in ongoing talks with the Oakland Athletics about Dan Haren, an accomplished pitcher who is a much cheaper option than Santana. Haren would cost, in prospects, a package comparable to what Santana is commanding, but he is already under contract for the next three years at $16.25 million (presuming his team exercises an option for 2010).

i think u have to make this move... to be honest, i think Hughes is a bit overrated... he's not the next Roger Clemens... i'm perfectly happy if we can hold onto Cano, Joba, Kennedy & Wang... losing Melky will hurt for next season, but come on, we're getting Johan! Damon is ok as a stopgap until Austin Jackson is ready to hit the scene... or maybe they go & sign an Aaron Rowand now... i'd love to have him as well... please, no Andruw Jones.

Yeah I hear ya dude. I think we're the only ones who think so though. LOL! I know what I read about this kid (I was so pumped up for this dude) and then when I saw him it just didn't add up to me. This poor kid Hughes definitely comes a little overhyped. I feel bad for him a little. I hate hearing this guy's the next Clemens, the next Michael Jordan... It's not fair to these kids sometimes, you know? You gotta do it for Johan though. If he goes to Boston, the best we can do is think wild card for the next 5-7 years. No chance at the American League East title if he ever went to Beantown. I'm a little concerned about this mystery 3rd prospect though. I really hope it's not Betances (can't be, they can't be that stupid), Tabata or Montero. Those 3 along with Joba are completely off limits if it were up to me. Those are the 4 most important pieces we absolutely must keep in order for us to still be a top team when Abreu's gone and Posada starts to decline. I also really like Christian Garcia (who many think has better stuff than Hughes), Humberto Sanchez, Jeff Marquez, Ferdin Tejeda, Garrett Patterson and Brett Gardner. These are guys that I'd look to hold onto also. Important building blocks that are all close to being ready for the majors. But lets pray Garcia, Sanchez and Tejeda all come back 100% from Tommy John. I'll be holding my breath. I guess we'll find out soon enough. It seems like every big Yankee pitching prospect has had Tommy John surgery recently. Crazy...

If we got Johan for this Hughes package and sign him to the huge deal (the rumor I hear is 150 mil. over 7 years) you really think we can blow another 90 mil. on Andruw Jones or 75 mil. on Rowand? You know that's what it'll take. I mean, there's gotta be a limit, no? I might wanna give this kid Brett Gardner a shot in center. I've read that he's a scrappy little guy that compares favorably to Lenny Dykstra. .300+ BA, .400 OB%, 50+ SB type potential with great range and a good arm in CF. Not bad. Would certainly save us a lot of money if we went this route. I'd love to see this kid lead off for us. I'd love to have a little sparkplug at the top like this guy. Only thing is, he's a lefty in a lineup already stacked with lefthanded hitting. I don't know, maybe that's not that big a deal though. If you can play, you can play right? What do you think about giving Gardner a shot in center?

i honestly don't think the Yankees view Gardner as a longterm solution, but who knows... like i said, i think he projects as a Scott Posednik type player w/maybe better pitch selection & patience at the plate... i do like the fact that he doesn't seem to strikeout nearly as often as Posednik tho, but the very little pop in his bat is a concern to me... i think Damon is good for another year or 2... i really like what i've been hearing about Austin Jackson... at 20 years old he's already putting up impressive #'s, albeit at the A level... i think they're definitely going to start him off at Trenton in AA, & if he's still impressing scouts i can see him as a late season callup in September next year... that is of course unless he's the mystery 3rd prospect being included in the Johan deal... i've also heard Tabata & Horne's names being mentioned as well in various news reports... it's going to be an interesting next few days, that's for sure... it's been a longtime since we've been able to talk about our prospects like this... the future is bright for this team, whether they make the Johan deal or not... we got a nice crop of young talent coming up, so i'm fine w/trading away what may be a blue chipper like Hughes to acquire a stud like Johan... one thing's for sure, we can't let Boston get him under any circumstances... a rotation of Johan, Beckett, Schilling, Dice-K & either Lester or Buchholtz is pretty much lights out.

We shouldn't even have to give up Melky if we're giving up Phil Hughes. We're giving up a very high prospect for a pitcher Minn is going to lose anyway. If we do give up Melky and Hughes, I'll still support the trade but that's pushing the limit as to what I'd give up. Then we need to sign an FA. The thought of Damon playing CF makes me nauseous.

The offer should have stayed Kennedy, Melky and someone like Gonzalez. This new offer is ridiculous.

But you know whats more ridiculous? The Twins aren't impressed with the addition of Hughes and want another top-tier prospect, like Horne or Jackson, to be included in the deal.

Back off, Yanks!

the sox said they'd give up ellsbury but not lester in the same package, and there is no way the twins will want coco crisp if they're getting ellsbury. irregardless of that, i think melky and hughes is a better package than ellsbury or lester/crisp/3rd guy.

i'm guessing minnesota decides by this week, some reports had the yanks giving them a 48-hour window and pulling the deal off the table on tuesday. i think minnesota will bite on hughes/melky and a low level prospect, something like a player to be named later. melky in CF and delmon young in RF gives the twins a superb defensive outfield and they can put hughes in the rotation next year as a 2-3 starter (is liriano coming back? obviously there will be ? marks coming off surgery but that guy had absolutely nasty stuff).

i agree with the consensus, if the red sox get santana you can pretty much pencil them in for al east dominance for the next decade. beckett, cy johan, dice-k, then bucholz, my goodness. the yanks need to make this move to balance the power back out in the AL east.

"I'm not going to be played against the Red Sox. That's not something I'll do. That's not something the Yankees should ever do, and that's I think what they're trying to do now," Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said Sunday. "So if they want the best offer that has been offered to them, then they need to make up their minds."

The Yankees have proposed swapping pitcher Phil Hughes, center fielder Melky Cabrera and a midlevel prospect for the two-time Cy Young Award winner, who can become a free agent after next season.

"We'll see how it goes, but this is not an act. It's not a bluff. It's just reality," he said. "Because as much as I want Santana, and you can make that clear -- for his sake, to know that I do want him -- but the fact is that I'm not going to play the game. We've made them the best offer. And at this point, it's not going to get any better. So they can decide. At this point, it's up to them. I don't think they want to lose us in this thing, obviously. Nobody wants to lose the Yankees in a negotiation."

one thing's for sure, we can't let Boston get him under any circumstances...

Actually, they're not offering as much for him as we are, at this point. It's all up to Minny now. According to what I saw, Hank says take it or leave it. This might just be one trade you don't make. I say leave it to fate. Some of our biggest fortunes have come out of the farm. The Yankee fan has never been patient in getting what we want, but we should never be impatient with our farms. Let them develop, grow and win for us.
I'll never trust this' team again.

Fuck-um then! They aren't going to get as much from Boston as they would us. And **** boston! We own their ass! It's just a matter of time before we start hitting it again.

it's a lot of postering & BS the teams are going through right now... will BOS be willing to pay Johan what he wants even if an agreement is made in terms of talent being traded? who knows... this week is gonna be very, very interesting to say the least... don't underestimate the offer BOS can make tho... Ellsbury, Masterson & that SS prospect of theirs are all pretty highly touted... the Twins could be looking at that offer more favorably than the one the Yankees offered simply because their main needs are in the bullpen & w.positional players, not in pitching

if we lose out on Johan, Dan Haren is a more than acceptable alternative, but only if Andy P comes back also... we need a reliable lefty in the rotation.

still, u have to figure it's gonna take a package just as big to land Haren as Johan:
A's GM Billy Beane is willing to talk about three of his starters - Dan Haren, Joe Blanton and Rich Harden - but is not pressured to move any of them.

Haren, the AL starter in the All-Star Game last July, is guaranteed only another $9.5 million - total - in the next two years, with a $6.75-million option for 2010. Blanton is reaching arbitration for the first time, meaning free agency still is three years away. The oft-injured Harden will earn $4.5 million in the final season of his contract, with a $7-million team option for 2009.

Beane also plans to float closer Huston Street as he decides if he wants to make 2008 a rebuilding season with a boatload of top prospects from other clubs.

"If we did do anything," Beane told the San Francisco Chronicle, "it would be like someone pushing us off a cliff because it was such a great deal."

The Yanks are killing the Red Sox offer by having Hughes in there. Lester has terrible command and Ellsbury is a nice prospect, but he's not elite. They could easily be beating the Sox with Kennedy in there instead.

I think the Yanks should hold firm and offer nothing more than Hughes and Melky and hopefully the twins are idiots and don't take it.

Supposedly a Monday deadline on this offer.

Lester is a pretty good young pitching prospect & Ellsbury projects as a young Johnny Damon... that's pretty good talent to get back in any trade... it's a good thing for us the Red Sox refuse to part w/both in the same deal cuz if they did, we wouldn't be able to match unless we threw Kennedy, Tabata or Austin Jackson into the deal... Boston's offer is likely going to be Ellsbury, Masterson & Jed Lowry... put that up against Hughes, Melky & a B prospect like Clippard or Gonzalez (the SS prospect we picked up in the Randy Johnson trade)... the Yankees offer is better but not by all that much to be honest... Ellsbury has Allstar potential... Melky's at best an average ML hitter w/a great arm but not great range in the OF... if the Twins' are placing big emphasis on filling their CF position, then it's very easy to see why they'd prefer the BOS package over ours.
