Cleveland Will Get Committed Salary Down To $24 Million
16th June, 2005 - 2:39 pm

Beacon Journal - With Wednesday's decision to release Robert Traylor and the expected release of shooting guard Lucious Harris in the next 15 days, the Cavaliers will have reduced their roster to just seven players.

When the free-agency signing period begins -- currently scheduled for July 14 pending the NBA lockout -- it is expected the team will renounce the rights to Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Jeff McInnis, DeSagana Diop, Dajuan Wagner, Scott Williams and Traylor.

That will leave the team with just $24 million committed in salaries for next season. Last season's salary cap was $43 million, but it is expected to climb to between $47-$50 million once the new collective bargaining agreement is settled. It would give the club a chance to sign two or three impact free agents.

This doesn't say anything about the Knicks pursuing Z. I think Boozer and Pau Gasol have better chances of becoming Knicks.

If he wants to sign for the MLE, that's a great deal for us.

getting Z is definitely feasible. it will probably cost us sweetney and mo (and maybe that 2006 spurs #1) to make it happen on a sign and trade.

in conjunction with that rumored boozer deal, isiah could potentially add green/wright, boozer, and Z in one offseason.

what would our salary number look like with both Boozer and Z?

I don't want a slow, plodding C who is over 30 and susceptible to injury. It's about building a legitimate championship contender, not merely making the playoffs with no chance to ever win a championship.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure renouncing the rights to a player means you can't re-sign him-- hence, no sign and trade.

yeah but if he signs for the MLE we probably have to promise him a front office position or something! LOL! He could get way more on the open market. Why couldn't we sign him for one year to get his bird rights and then resign him after for a fairer contract?

Well who cares if he wants to come for the MLE, let him come.

And how exactly would you feel about that?

I would be ecstatic!!

In that scenario it would make sense to draft a 3 so that we would have the most balanced roster possible.

Plus we could buy out penny and let tim play out the rest of is season and see how he plays. That would ruly be a best case scenario.

I would deal for both boozer and Z if we are willing to draft a couple of Centers that can come in and sit on the bench and learn how to properly play the position...Z is not fast, but he knows how to play. Hunter/Fryes and Petro would be in heaven if we were able to get a guy like Z for them to learn from...
