Its the same old Jalen Rose trade with a twist.

Toronto trades:
Jalen + 16 + 38
for
Penny +30 +54

I say this because the 16 million they save should be worth at least this. They are still young and still want picks, but they have to give up position to do it. They have a lotto pick already, they would probably consider this.

We would have two picks under 16 and still have a first round bubble pick. I would do something like:

#8 Joey Grahm
#16 Bynum/Petro/Warrick/Blatche/Villanueava/Taft or who the hell ever is there that makes sense
#38 Julius Hodge/Sean banks

Put TT in place of Penny and the Raptors do the deal as TT is more serviceable than Penny until his contract runs its course.

I don't think the salaries match with TT.

I think it would be enough of a steal if we can grab the better player in the deal (Rose) and move up from #30 to #16. The idea of also moving up from 54 to 38 seems like going overboard. It can't hurt to try, but I just don't see it happening.

That's a nice trade if we have Herb next year, because we'll need a guy who can just break plays (since we'll have none) and go one-on-one in the fourth quarter. With Herb as the non-coach, it might be fun to watch Craw, Marbles, and Rose go off offensively at least. With a real coach running set plays, Rose is a disaster.

I'm looking at realgm and it seems that Jalen Rose is also in the last year. with that said if it is true that rose is also in the last year then I would say no to the deal.

I think Rose has two more years after this next upcoming one.

As to that trade- sorry, skip moving up in the 2nd round and just give me 16 without 30 going their way- we're saving a ton of money for them and that is the least they can do

in fact, i'd trade 8 for 7 and take their extra pick.

and if you want to say we're getting the better player in the deal, sure, but why are they looking to dump his salary.

Be honest I would just let penny finish out and let him walk same with TT. thats a saving of 30 million on the cap. Its time the Knicks start to let the cap get in the respectable territory.

It's only one extra year for Rose's contract. Why do you care whether we're over the capy by 60 vs. 75 mil for one extra year? Even if you do want to get under the cap, it won't happen for a few years; so, adding Rose's salary for the 2006 season wouldn't matter. I'd rather have the better player (Rose) and the draft pick instead of having the worse player, not having the draft pick, and getting to brag about being only 60 mil rather than 75 mil over the cap for one season.

Excellent point. I think sometimes people think nicking away at the cap is a solution and its not! Especially when you are 50+ million dollars above it. You let salaries expire in the same year and you knock of 35-40 million in one offseason. Then you can realisticaly start chipping away. But you made the compelling argument to do the trade.

the problem is when rose gets 30 minutes a game and ariza gets 5. and that happens for years after when we could have gotten rid of penny for free.

that wont happen. Ariza got decent minutes last year, and he'll continue to with his improved jumpshot and handle that he comes in with next season.

i'll believe it when i see it. come on, did you think ariza got enough minutes end of last season when penny was AWOL? if we have a proven scorer and contributor, that won't at all conflict with our interest in developing ariza?

i would probably still do the deal to get the pick, but it really bugs me when people say long deals don't matter because we'll never be under the cap. we can't have an obscenely high payroll and develop young prospects. it will not happen.
