My answer=1 or 2

I would say top 3 definitely. He would've shown as much as Marvin Williams did so why not...

absolutely, no doubt about it. geez now that isiah is foaming at the mouth over character, i guess if amare was in this draft, we wouldnt be taking him, you know his story he lived in a crack house for a year had troubles and fights in various schools, moved around, both parents completely and utterly fcked up or perhaps caron Butler with his weapons possession charge and a year in juevenile hall? some of these guys come from bad circumstances, doesnt mean they wont grow up like these guys.

what you need to look for in an athlete is a combination of body skills MENTAL and PHYSICAL toughness strength athletiscm intelligence work ethic. Now you could have a guy like smith who just is off the chars athletically that other factors dont mean as much

or a ben wallace who had a combination of toughness athletiscm and work ethic of the charts without the skills

you have a guy like Frye who has the athletiscm charatcer and skills but lacks the mental/physical toughness and body--and there is no one greta feture that stands out. Its his body that scares me the worst. How bad is he going to be punked by the Ben wallaces of the NBA?

But when you look at Isiah's personal background, and his drafting of Ariza, do you really think he'll fall for "character" guys the way Layden did? I read the Channing Frye piece, but that may have been Isiah looking for toughness not Isiah wary of trouble. Also, I think Isiah is working his a*& off for this draft, looking at every angle of every player. In the end I'd bet he would prefer to take someone who, like himself, and like Amare, managed to fight through all the trouble to make it. Don't worry, IT won't draft soft.

I think his stock would have dropped. Because no one that goes to Indiana now a days gets drafted high.

Two guys to watch next year

D.J White of Indiana

Paul Millsap of Louisiana Tech

Indiana actually has a nice team and white is going to drive into the NBA lottery next year--incredible talent.

Marvin williams actually has a game, he can hit the 3, dribble, and shoot. josh smith can jump and dunk, his overall skills look ugly, I don't know what a year at indiana would of done for his draft status, if anything had he gone to college, it would of showed us that he actually needs 3 years of college to work on his overall game...

Yeah i was gonna say that, MW is skilled and JOsh really isn't. He's a tremendous athelete, but he can't do much beyond that. I would say between 3 and 7. Some teams need pg's and we got some really good ones in this draft so I don't think he woulda been picked over Chris Paul, or Deron. It really depends.

I am not sure if you saw Josh Smith take over in the fourth against the Knicks but he is going to be a special player the kid is going to develop a post game and he rejects anything near the rim, he has a chance to be a premier defender in this league, and performing at the Dunk Contest proved how special he can be.......

He is a year out of high school and look extremely dominant at times, the knicks could have had him had they not brought in marbury, and he would have been a nice buidling block to add with this years pick

I concur on Josh Smith...

He never won any rookie of the month awards, but he certainly showed incredible flashes of brilliance.

Last year, he probably should have been taken where Josh Childress was taken.

Knowing what people know now, he'd have been a lock for a lottery pick (many thought he would be last season).

So much potential in this kid to be great--- he's already a strong rebounder and shot blocker... and he's got the aggressive nature to throw it down every time he's near the bucket. You never know how players will develop--- but if this is it, he already has a very impressive game.

TKF, I totally agree, when I in NY all I hear about this Josh Smith kid was wow, he is like Dominique, flashy and athlethic. But after watching a couple of Hawk games in person. I just go away with yeah, he can dunk and play some defense but his offensive skills are horrible, decision making even worst, and he commits the most dumbest fouls I have ever seen. Ariza's game is better than Josh Smith.

my friend and I shared a season ticket package this year, we had 4 seats, so we went to the hawks game a lot this year. I saw a lot of josh smith, and if you were lucky to catch him on a good night, he looked like a very good player, but if you watched him as much as I did you will see a player, that can't shoot the ball at all, has no handles, no moves what so ever, he never even thinks about posting( so whoever said he is going to have a post game must see something myself and about 15,000 other people don't) He gets beaten a lot on man to man defense but has the athletic ability to recover and block shots, and is a good weak side shot blocker. His game has a ways to go. Great dunker, great leaper, but that does not a great player make....

Yep. I saw the same thing. I just show up at the gate and ask for tickets, and get them free. I probably saw about 7 games this season. I like his energy but he constantly plays out of control.
I think Knight has a game plan of Marvin Williams and Louis Williams in the 2nd. This wouldn't so bad for Josh because it would turn him into a garbage type of forward who could concentrate on getting rebounds and put backs, and playing defense.

Josh Smith isn't really so much a swingman as he is like a smaller Marcus Camby. He's a superb leaper, long... great at blocking shots and throwing down dunks. He runs the floor well and is super athletic, but he's not much of a man to man defender--- but he's a superb shot blocker from the weak side.

Weird... he's young enough that he might grow another inch or so and the comparisons will be more founded.
