AUBURN HILLS -- Detroit Shock coach Bill Laimbeer said he had a formal interview with Knicks president Isiah Thomas on Sunday in New York to discuss the team's head-coaching job.

Laimbeer and Thomas spoke for three hours following the Shock's victory over the New York Liberty at Madison Square Garden.

"I have a great deal of respect for Isiah as a leader and basketball mind," Laimbeer said Thursday afternoon from his office at The Palace.

He and Thomas were teammates when the Pistons won NBA titles in 1989 and 1990.

Laimbeer said he would be interested in an NBA coaching job after his daughter, Keri, graduates from high school. She is finishing her senior year at Detroit Country Day.

Laimbeer, who has no NBA coaching experience, said he didn't know when Thomas would decide on a coach.

This is Laimbeer's fourth season as Shock coach. He led them to the WNBA championship in 2003. They are 3-0 this season.

bring him in as an Assistant first, i'd have no problem w/that...he hasn't done anything to warrant handing over the reigns as the head coach just yet.

what???? Are you kidding me? Isiah got his first head coaching job while he was an analyst, he never coached before, so did many other guys, i.e. Doc Rivers, etc......Bill has been coaching for a long time, perhaps not at the NBA level, but he has been a professional coach for a while...What do you consider the WNBA?

what has herb done? he can't be any worse than herb. what has any coach done that we have a shot at getting? PJ? - Please...

I'd take Bill L anyday. He's tough, can coach and is Isiah's Boy (although Isiah is cutthroat and has no "boys") - furthermore, if Bill L is bad, he can be fired easily and if he's really bad, maybe we'd win the lotto for once. And if he's good, then we got our first good coach since Van G left.

I have been calling for him to be announced as our headcoach for a while now, and normally when I mention something, it has always happened....Don't be surprise if Bill gets the job, because first and foremost, it would be a good economical move. We are already paying Lenny and the other cat a lot of money for the next couple of years while they aren't doing Sh*t for us...Laimbeer is definitely a better choice at this point...We need a fresh start, new blood, etc. Clean house, get rid of all of the old gizzards, i.e. Herb, Kurt, Houston, and many others from the lower level

first of all, i've said plenty of times i don't want PJ, so no need to bring him into this conversation.

second, any defense that starts with "he can't be any worse than Herb" isn't exactly what i'm looking for in our next head coach...i want LONGTERM solutions here...a guy who can come in & stick around several years, impose a general style of play & identity that this team has been lacking since Ewing left...i'm not looking for anymore interim stopgap solutions...if that's the case, i'd just as soon stick w/Herb...hiring new interim guys every year is just continuing along w/the endless ridiculous cycle we're in right now...what's the point?

First of all, we should have never hired Lenny. Isiah should have hand picked a guy like Laimbeer and perhaps by now, we would have been a much better squad.

I would love Laimbeer. It seems like Nate McMillan is not gonna happen. I don't see PJ coming either.

I'm really thinking it will be Herb and Pat to train whatever young big Zeke picks.

Actually, Laimbeer might be a good choice. He has some experience with Xs and Os from coaching the Shock to a championship, he has championship experience as a player as well, and most importantly, he's a fiery guy who would really implement a system and have our players busting their asses on D. I think he'd be similar as a coach to Dave Cowens, who had the Hornets playing well for a stretch in the mid-late 90s and is being talked about as a candidate for Minnesota's coaching job.

So far, Isiah has made nothing but bad decisions when it comes to hire coaches...I sure hope that he follows his heart this time and hires a guy like Laimbeer that he not only played with, but one that can transfer the front office's philosophy to the players. It would be good for all parties involved....I don't like Herb's understanding of the game or mainly because he couldn't distinguish between when to tank and win...For a ball club who is moving towards a youth movement, Herb is definitely not the right coach..

Here is one thing that is amazing about Laimbeer, he coached the WNBA and won the big prize...This guy has been a winner at every level, so why not give him a chance to teach our boys/girls how to defend their territories....

I was just about to post that. Bill Laimbeer is a Knick. He has that New Yorker confidence and he is passionate about the game. He is not afraid of the media and I'm sure he could motivate his players to win. People don't give enough credit to WNBA coaches. Laimbeer instills confidence in that Detroit Shock team. He says stuff like he thinks that team could average 80 points per game and no WNBA team has done that ever. You gotta love the confidence he has. I'm quite sure those ladies feed off of that.

I would love Laimbeer in NY. I hope that gets done. I'm not into any other name out there. Laimbeer or Herb.

For the price it may cost to hire a guy like Phil or McMillan, Laimbeer is the better choice. He is young and energetic, most of all, he would be inexpensive. Lenny is earning close to 5 million for the next 2 years and Chaney is still on the payroll. We have to get smart...Phill will probably coach for no more than 2 years, Brown has health issues, and Nate will command a little too much....Herb could have been my choice, but by virtue of his poor decisions in the last 15 games, he showed that he doesn't warrant the position.

The idea of Laimbeer as a coach in N.Y. is heating up. It is all over ESPN and other networks. Even the experts are saying that Laimbeer is a much better fit than all of the other names.

in all honesty, what isiah SHOULD do, is to give herb next season and then step down as president, bring someone in like walsh, and coach the team himself.

Dude! are you serious??? I am disappointed. Isiah really doesn't have much room for error the next season. If he fails, the media will want his head. Therefore, he must make the sure pick by hiring a guy that he should be willing to go down with. They are both from the same hard nose system and know eachother's tendencies fairly well. As a PG for Detroit, Isiah had to have a pretty good feel for Laimbeer, which is no different than he as a GM and Laimbeer as a head coach

Laimbeer made it clear that he wants an NBA job....and why wouldn't he??? He already has accomplished the impossible with the WNBA and now he wants a different challenge. I know that Michael Cooper failed as an interim, but so did Herb. Give Laimbeer a chance, that boy can coach....
