Looking over the draft board in 2003, the year we took big mike sweetney at 9, i was actually surprised to see the weakness of the draft afterward. there was no ron artest, amare stoudemire, or whatever star we passed over that year. the best guys taken after 9 were jarvis hayes (10), mikael pietrus (11), josh howard (29) if we wish we took a wing, nick collison (12) as an alternate PF, and that's really it. williw green, kyle korver, mo williams, james jones in the second, but that's another story. these guys are decent, but IMO not a clear choice in hindsight of what we should have done instead of sweetney.

just an observation, i know we're mostly not totally happy with sweetney, but seems it wasn't that deep a draft, didn't have great options, we really have to set our sights higher this year.

Yeah, it's strange how there was such a drop off after #8. If we had a crystal ball, the best thing to do would have been to trade down and grab Josh Howard and get at least 1, maybe 2, future 1st rd picks. But that's only hindsight. Mike was an okay pick at #9

if i could do it all over again i'd take any 1 of those guys over Mike Sweetney to be honest.

Mike Sweetney was the best choice at the time, and it hasn't really been wrong in retrospect. Josh Howard's the only guy on that list I'd trade him for, but Josh Howard was actually given real quality minutes on a top notch team, while our stupid organization didn't do that for Mike. There was no reason, coming off a 37 win season or whatever it was, and not much potential on the roster, to not start a lottery pick or at least put him in the rotation.

is that because they're significantly better players, or because you wish we'd gotten a good young swingman sooner?

i guess what this means is, that would have been a grat year to win the lottery...

i just think all of those guys will turn out to be better players than Sweetney in the long run...just my personal opinion...Josh Howard is the best of the lot & he was taken last out of all of them...Pietrus & Hayes would both give us a great swingman that we could really use at this point...& Collison will end up to be a KVH type player in a year or 2 from what i can tell, but probably tougher & more physical downlow...at the very least he'll be a taller version of Matt Harpring, which i wouldn't mind either.

i don't see Sweetney impacting games the way some of you think he does, at least not nearly as consistently as he needs to in order to be considered a player w/good upside...& his ongoing weight issues leave me little faith that he'll ever be any better than a poor man's Armen Gilliam to be honest...hardly worth wasting a #9 overall pick on imho...but the jury is still out on him i guess...2 years isn't enough to fully judge his worth...i just don't see the star quality in him that many of you do.
