Speaking of the controversy of Nash's MVP selection he responds:
"He's Canadian anyway, so what's racial about that?"

LMAO!!! Did he really say that!? What a moron. Some of these athletes have no connection to reality.

Another stupid thing I heard and athlete saying. This is from Mike and Mike in the morning and went something like this; I dont think any MLB player has got the same amount of grief as me! I know hank aaron and Jackie Robinson got crap but no one got it for 6 years!

maybe he was being facetious? you can't draw an intonation in his voice from a quote in a news article.
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

Sad thing is, it's not just athletes. So many people in society are out of touch in general. Too arrogant to even care about getting simple facts straight. Marion should be forced to repeat the 1st grade after the playoffs are over.

Sounds like it was a sarcastic remark.

When was the last "white" MVP anyway?

Larry Bird in 86. Nothing racial about that, he was the best player that year. Compare his numbers that year and the two previous years which he won it to Nash's this year and you would be laughing your rear off. 25.8 ppg, 9.8 rpg (7.5 drpg), 6.8 apg, 37 mpg, and for the criteria of fg% per game, he shot 42% from the 3 point line. So please don't use Bird, his numbers that year and in 84 and 85 destroys Nash's. He is without the doubt the weakest MVP. Nash wouldn't even be my third choice for the award. Personally I think Amare Stoudmire was the MVP on that team, he was the only one of them that tried to play defense while putting up his offensive numbers.

Bernard King was the man!!! I think Bird had gotten the MVP after the 1984-85 season too. That year Bernard was clearly the better player and was destroying the league. Bird had the winning team but Bernard was doing it all himself.

Don't get me started. Bernard used to own Bird. Too bad he tore his ACL. #30 should be in the rafters at the Garden.

By the way.....Yes Marion is a idiot. He says alot of stupid things during post game interviews. He has crazy game but he ain't the brightest bulb on your Christmas tree

King was avging like 5 rpg and Bird had 10. Thats a huge difference.
King avged abotu 32 points to birds 28 points, thats a significant, but not huge difference.
Bird also avged more assists.
Combine that with the fact that the celts won 63 games, and I don't think you have a point.

The total statistical difference between them for the 85 season was actually not all that great. Bernard's PER was 25.2, compared to Bird's 26.5. An edge for Bird, but not huge. I'm also not a fan of using team wins to compare individual players at all-- obviously Bird's teammates were FAR superior to what Bernard had to work with, so comparing team wins here is useless for getting traction on how King and Bird compare to eachother. The one area where Bird did have a huge advantage is games played-- he played 80 games compared to 55 for King. That's a significant enough difference to make the ranking a no-brainer; Bird definitely deserved it more than King.

Yeah I hear ya Bonn. The PER is a very cool stat, but as some of us offered in the Nash thread, there are intangibles that impact a player's value to his team that aren't picked up by stats.

No, but it's a quick and easy way to evaluate the sum total of all the 'traditional' stats-- points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, fg%, etc.-- and has the added bonus of adjusting those stats where appropriate (eg, for minutes played, pace, eFG%, rebound rate, etc). PER is not a perfect tool for evaluating players, but it tells you everything you could hope to know from a boxscore, and indeed already builds in a sophisticated analysis of everything you could find in that boxscore, weighting positive contributions against negative ones. PER's biggest weakness is that it doesn't really take a player's defensive contributions into full consideration, but then again, no other stat is really good at doing this either. (PER figures in blocks and steals, but there's a lot more to defense than blocks and steals.)

Case in point, Killa4luv was making a statistical comparison between King and Bird by using selected stats to come to the conclusion that Bird was significantly better statistically, so it was entirely appropriate to mention PER to settle the issue.
