Is PER the only thing you ever use to evaluate players tom?
No, but it's a quick and easy way to evaluate the sum total of all the 'traditional' stats-- points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, fg%, etc.-- and has the added bonus of adjusting those stats where appropriate (eg, for minutes played, pace, eFG%, rebound rate, etc). PER is not a perfect tool for evaluating players, but it tells you everything you could hope to know from a boxscore, and indeed already builds in a sophisticated analysis of everything you could find in that boxscore, weighting positive contributions against negative ones. PER's biggest weakness is that it doesn't really take a player's defensive contributions into full consideration, but then again, no other stat is really good at doing this either. (PER figures in blocks and steals, but there's a lot more to defense than blocks and steals.)
Case in point, Killa4luv was making a
statistical comparison between King and Bird by using selected stats to come to the conclusion that Bird was significantly better
statistically, so it was entirely appropriate to mention PER to settle the issue.
