I was reading an article from some crappy sportswriter and he said the Cleveland Browns should void the contract of tight end Kellen Winslow who wrecked his knee in a bike accident.

Sounds heartless, yes. But thats an option I'd like the new CBA to have; except less cruel. Maybe they'd be an insurance program that players & owners pay into. So if an Allan Houston type situation happens the contract is voided and the insurance policy (say $1 million for max contract players, $100,000 for mid level paid players, $10,000 to rookie contract players) is paid out to the player.

The contract then comes off the cap, a roster spot made available. And a capped team would be allowed to sign a player up to the dollar amount of the contract voided.

There was probably a provision in the contract saying he couldn't ride around his motorcylce and they could void his deal if he got hurt doing it. (The Bulls had the same thing with Jay Williams).

I'm not sure but I think NFL contracts are not guaranteed. They could waive guys if they needed to to make room under the cap. They do it all the time.

NFL contracts are front end loaded with upfront cash. THen salary is lower, usually with a guarantee period. Say on a 4 year deal, two might be guaranteed. Say its a 40 mil deal, 10 might be upfront, then the 30 is spread over 4 years, at 7.5 per year.

Now this is very important to me about young players, they need to be professional. I read that the browns should cut winslow some slack as he is only 21. Then in my mind young men not ready to commit should not be professional. I know I was not ready to accept certain responsablities at 21 as I am years later. But if I am training and working hard to be a professional athlete, I must accept that are some things I cannot do, and must be careful to fulfil my obligations.

Teams make huge investments in these kids. There must be some accountablility for actions. What he was doing was just plain stupid!

Its not "PUnishment", just a matter of fact, just the real world, and the players must live up to what a contract means.

ALso, Terrell Owens wanting to renegotiate after one year is a joke!

I though the bulls were very nice to Jay Williams. They paid him 1.3 million and did not have to. Im ok with some disability payment, but not full value for services not renderd
