Trade from strength (unload some power forwards):
Let's assume Phil Jackson re-ups with the Lakers. I think he'll want to upgrade shooters & defensive toughness asap.
Knicks trade: Kurt Thomas (toughness) & Jamal Crawford (shooter to protect Kobe)----I also think Phil will think he can improve Jamal's defense & decision making.
Lakers Trade: Lamar Odom & spare change (to even the salary). Odom will not flourish with Kobe but will flourish back home in NY.
Next:
Knicks Trade: Sweetney (I like him, but I think height & hops limitations will always prevent this guy from being better than average).
Grizzlies Trade: James Posey.
Mid Level Exception: Sam Dalembert (longshot given he'll demand more), or Jerome James, or Kwame Brown
Draft at 8: Sean May (who I do think is more like Elton Brand and less like Mike Sweetney)...plus the Indiana connection (Scott May/Isaiah Thomas) may point things in this direction. Unlike Splitter, Petro....he'll contribute from day 1.
Draft at 30: Nate Robinson
Roster:
C - Jerome James, Bruno Sundov (in reality, some power forwards get minutes behind James) PF - May, Mo Taylor, Rose, JYD SF - Lamar Odom, Ariza, Tim Thomas (trade bait, inactive list), Penny (trade bait, inactive list), SG - Posey, Houston (can he ever give us 15 minutes a game again?) PG - Marbury, Jackson, Robinson
That team (though a little lacking in the outside shooting department) is 10 games better than the sorry team that just finished a sorry season.
