What role do you want Jamal to have?
Starting PG after a Marbury trade
Starting SG
Combo guard off the bench until he earns starter's minutes

I'd say the combo guard off bench option. Bring Jamal in off the bench and play him on the opposing team's less effective guard. You don't have to give up a lot of assets to get a great SG. Just get someone at Jim Jackson's level or even a little lower--someone who can easily be taken out of the starting lineup if Jamal shows he's ready to be a starter by playing better defense and driving to the basket more. I think any plan of Jamal starting at either backcourt position before he makes changes to his game is a mistake.

the only realistic options i see for the Knicks as far as getting a starting calibre SG to put in front of Crawford based on the trade assets they currently have are Jalen Rose & Jerry Stackhouse...maybe Cuttino Mobley, but i don't want to use the MLE on a SG when our needs in the frontcourt are so much more pronounced at this point.

Finley too. You could try to trade Kurt for any of those players. You may have to add a player (JYD, Mo, or Malik) to make the salaries match. Then you still have the draft picks and expiring contracts to improve elsewhere

looks like Bonzi Wells will be another trade candidate this offseason judging from his no show in the playoff game tonight...he's the last guy i'd want at this point...how any player could think of himself before the team when they're in a playoffs series just tells me volumes about that guy...keep him out of NY, please.

as for Finley, the only trade that really matches is a salary dump for DAL like Penny for Finley, but i would venture to guess they'd ask for more in return than just Penny's expiring deal...the only other deal that matches salary wise is KT & Mo T for Finley, which i'd be more inclined to do from our end since it clears up glut at the PF position, but not sure DAL needs another 2 PF's when they have Dirk & KVH on the team already.

I agreewith everything you've said here. Jalen would probably be the best option because he is the best shooter of that bunch and he can also play the point and the 3, which would give us more flexibility with Craw in.

I would look at Bonzi too, he is a good scorer and defender.

Its amazing that a guy we invested so much into would end up being a combo guard off the bench, but maybe thats the best way to help the team. I dont know, it depends on all our moves this offseason. I doubt he is untouchable. Maybe we do draft a SG with our 8th pick and make Craw move to the bench. When we were discussing trading for Craw, I didn't though it was going to be so complicated finding a role for Craw...

Tonight's game - kind of weird, huh:

http://cbs.sportsline.com/nba/gamecenter/recap/NBA_20050501_PHO@MEM

Memphis coach Mike Fratello tried to jumpstart his Grizzlies by telling the disruptive Bonzi Wells that he wouldn't be playing and not to bother sitting on the bench. Williams, perhaps in silent protest, wore a blue sweatband around his left biceps with Wells' No. 6 on it.

Fratello thought it worked.

"I thought I saw a genuine -- for the first time in a long time -- a genuine pull for each other. If you're going to go out, you want to go out swinging, and I thought the guys did that," Fratello said.

He makes slightly more than the MLE or slightly more than the average player. It's not a huge amount in basketball terms. If he's a top 5 sixth man, he'll be much more valuable than his salary.

and the plan was to start him as a 6th man and slowly groom him as a starting combo guard...am I the only one that has a memory that last before the last loss?

It's truly amazing sometimes how we forget all the work and press conferences from the summer that had crawford coming off the bench to back up both marbs and houston until houston's contract expired and he would be the starting SG with starting SG money.

I see some of the posts are in the thousands, so I am sure some of you remember it, but just in case you forget, I'm sure someone can dig up an old press conference link...
http://www.nba.com/knicks/news/crawfordwilliams_040806.html

Going into the season...that was the plan...Houston turned out to play on 20 games, thus hurrying Crawford into a starting role playing out of position as a SG that stands on the perimeter.

Couple that with Tiny Tim's Funk and was there any wonder why January sucked?

If we are able to replace Houston with a starting Guard worthy of the MLE that can defend on the perimeter and get a shot blocking center...we are suddenly the 5th best team in the east OVER NIGHT!

Yep, everyone has injuries, but we lost arguably one of our best players to injury and the other to mental defect.

Come to think of it...We could have used shandon.

The more I think about it...Shandon and Mourning would make the 4 seed in the east (3 seed because we win the division)

all kool aid all the time.

Shandon's only effective as a defensive specialist off the bench...pretty much the same player as Greg Buckner...he's not making a difference at all in how the season ended for us this year.
