Every year guys in all walks of life have this philosophy on what a team should look like in order to win a championship. Usually their opinions are just mimicing the blueprint of the team that just won a championship.

"You need a MVP candidate.....no wait you need 2 bonified all-stars....no wait you need a dominant big man....no you need jumpshooters....no wait you need big men that can block shots.....you need a defensive stopper on the perimeter to guard the other teams best player"

What wins a championship? Talent, chemistry, and a game plan. No matter how that comes together...that's what winning a championship comes down to.

Take a look at how these playoff teams are playing:
Washington looks like everyone is playing for themselves and there is no trusting in each other. Arenas thinks the more he scores the better his team is. That is totally wrong.
In Philly, Webber wants the team to let him do his thing in the high post where he is happy. Iverson just wants to go full speed, meanwhile his team is 3 steps behind him. Dalembert, Korver, and Iggie are all left in the dust.
New Jersey is relying too much on Vince and Kidd is playing outside his element with all the shooting he has been doing.
Boston self destructed. They seem like they have more in mind than basketball.

This is just examples of some teams.

Big problem with us is the Knicks would get wiped off the court against any of these teams in a 7 game series.

What makes a playoff team first of all? What makes a team ulimately stand alone with the best players in the world?

The Knicks in my opinion don't need a fancy coach yet. Isiah still has to get guys here that fit in with each other. In a perfect world Isiah upgrades the 3 spot with a consistant scorer and picks up a bonified true NBA center. Isiah also bolsters the bench at point guard also. The Knicks would be prime then you can look for a coach that has a plan in place that uses his players to their strengths.

I'm monologing.....

Any thoughts?

number one thing that makes a team is a style of play. are you a defensive team? offensive? half court? full court?

once you establish a style of play or settle on a system, you get a coach to coach that system and then you get players to FIT that system.

after you get players to FIT that system, you then see who excels, who has the talent, and who works in that system and then make trades, drafts, signings to improve the talent level to play better in that particular system.

the teams that win it all have a system, and have the talent to play in that system and excel in it. most cases, it's a superstar, then really good role players. as detroit proved, it can be a collection of players as long as they play well in a particular system.

in our situation, our #1 problem is that we have NO TYPE OF SYSTEM. that's why you get a mixmatch group of players that don't fit at all. until we figure out what we want to do, then we'll never go out and acquire talent that fit together.

It's extremely difficult to establish a system when a team changes coaches in midseason two years in a row and completely overhauls its roster. I think that Isiah has done a good job. Changes had to be made but it's going to take time to establish a system.
