1996-Present: 13-team Lottery

In October of 1995, the Board of Governors increased the number of teams participating in the Lottery from 11 to 13 to account for the addition of expansion teams Toronto and Vancouver. Starting in 1996, the team with the worst record in the Lottery continued to have a 25% chance (250 combinations) of winning the first pick, teams two (20%; 200 combinations) through six (6.4%; 64 combinations) have slightly fewer chances, team seven (4.4%; 44 combinations) has the same number of chances and teams eight (2.9%; 29 combinations)through 12 (0.6%; six combinations) have slightly more chances. The number of chances for team 13 (0.5%; five combinations) did not change.Tied teams split the number of chances and a blind draw determines which team receives an extra chance if the combined number of chances can not be split evenly. (note: the more and less notations are changes from previous draft lottery)

So it looks like will have (44+29/2) either 36 or 37 balls in vat of of 1000.

Another way to look at it...

Why did the Knicks had to win tonight? Grr! I hope that coin flip is in our favor. Wow, a significant difference between team seven and team eight... I hope those 44 combinations can take us to the top three.

I remember last season someone posted the possibilities of each position getting the first three picks. I would love to see that and also see how many times has happened that a team as low as 7 has winded up with pick #1...

Unless the rules changed... the only thing the coin flip determines is if we get 36 or 37 balls. Right now we don't have a pick!!! The lottery determines 4 or 7 or 9.. the more balls the higher the probability we get a ball picked sooner.

so basically, winning last night cost us 7 ping pong balls out of 1000. not a huge deal. It would be funny if Toronto got Bogut though.

Now....if neither the Knicks or the Raps move up in the lottery selection, I guess the 7th and 8th spot would be determined by the coin flip? That sucks.

That's correct. That's exactly what happened to break ties among lottery teams last season... see here: http://www.insidehoops.com/draft-order.shtml

Suffice it to say that if Toronto wins the random tiebreaker and selects Gerald Green right ahead of us, I will not be pleased.

Be confident. With the picks that we have, I am not affraid of losing out, Isiah will find us some decent or flat out star. who can we offer the Bucks for their draft pick???? or Utah for dumping the scrubbs that they have given us during the Layden era. We need to moveup
