very simple isiah...DO NOTHING.

use your 3 draft picks, and draft the BPA. that's your skill.

after that...DO NOTHING.

i would be 100% satisfied if that's all he does this summer.

thats not enough, we can get better with trades and we should if thats possible. If its not, then we should do nothing.

I think he has no confidence whatsoever in Isiah. If thats the way we want our Knicks run then everyone should be fired

No, I agree with djsunyc.... the only way we can stop being the laughing stock of the league is to pull ourselves out of this salary cap quagmire and start with a clean slate... of course, this won't be until Crawford gets traded or his contract runs out in 2010

Exactly; When you have some nice trade assets, you use them regardless of any draft picks you have.

yes, i want to build a team of < $6 mil contracts and < 25 year old players. let these overpriced dogs expire. you have to ask yourself, do you believe in isiah's drafting ability? i do. i think that's his best trait. so look at it this way:

3 picks this summer - gives us ariza, sweets, 3 picks all < 25 and making < $3 mil

let tim and penny expire (saving a net of $60 mil)

2 picks next summer - gives us ariza, sweets?, 3 2005 picks, 2 2006 picks - that's 6-7 players under <25/26 and < $3 mil

let mo, jyd expire.

in the interim - you can trade kurt for either a player that expires in 06 or another draft pick. we can also go after a <25 year old big man via the MLE like hunter or gadz.

so, if the target year was the year after h20's expire - we're looking at least 9 players, all under 26 on their rookie deals.

you want to trade tim or penny for zach/boozer/ray, then we give up ZERO picks, and we keep ACCUMULATING picks and build our pipeline that way while marbury and zach can sell tickets.

OR no deals past 06/07.

when we are TRULY ready to be that finals team, marbury should be 31/32 or maybe not even on this team anymore.

this is my ideal plan and i think it's the best way for us to get out of this mess. it gets expedited based on the talent we draft but you see where i'm going. we'll have a TON of manageable contracts and can easily move players around to get good fits for our team. you want to appease the masses, then TELL them we're rebuilding. bring in a coach that will TEACH like hubie. if you're up front with ny fans, then you get a pass. the garden will still sell tickets, even a team at or slightly below .500.

That is EXACTLY what I'm hoping will happen to this team. Except in my bizzaro fantasy, I have us getting LeBron for a bunch of expiring contracts as well

In 2 years Crawfords contract will be seen as an excellent if not bargain of a deal.

As far as what DJSUNYC was saying....that is the most realistic plan for the future.

#1 Draft well

#2 trade guys like KT away to a vet team that will cough up either a draft pick or a mid-level exemption

#3 use the mid-level(s) to patch up some holes, let Penny and Timmy rot away ah la Big Dog Robinson and Jamal Mashburn.

Good things are bound to happen. The suffering can't go on forever.

EXACTLY.

If and only if Zeke can acquire a $6 mill shot blocker for Kurt and a $6 mill defensive/pure shooting SG for another of our PFs, then do it, otherwise, I'm content with letting Penny and tt expire for us and then jyd and mo expire.

the lebron sweepstakes begins after tt and penny expire, and for some deranged reason, i don't see why we can't get him.

did you see his quote after last night's loss:
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/11338345.htm

"We lost our coach, we get new players, we get new ownership and now Pax might be getting fired," James said. "It's been difficult. We just stopped playing our No. 1 point guard for no reason and as a team we didn't know why ... I've got to stay positive, but we are headed in the wrong direction right now."

all kool aid all the time.

good post. Our draft picks are our only assets this offseason.

Allow me to add to this:

Buyout Penny. Even if it doesnt really save us anything. We need the roster spot.
Retire Houston
Dump Bruno and Jackson

Split the MLE on
Ariza 4 years $19mm
Butler 3 years $3mm
Charlie Bell 3 years $4.5mm. This give you a cheap experiences backup PG who can score and is defensive minded. Think a bigger Darryl Armstrong at 26 years old.

draft 2-3 best players available

roster:
Marbury, Bell
Crawford, Ariza
TT, JYD
Mo T, Sweetney, Rose
KT, Butler
with 2-3 picks... I would like Blatche and Petro as we can afford to wait on guys (one or two will need to sit on IR anyway)

To me this is a realistic start to getting some sanity into how this roster is build

another reason to keep accumulating picks and young players...if we do want to trade for a star, then this is what other teams want just as much as expiring deals.

we didn't get marbury for dice + ward, we got marbury for vujanic, lampe, and the 2 #1's.

lakers got odom and caron butler for shaq.

if we have 5-6 first rounders on the team come 2007, then we could potentially put together a package for lebron or someone like that combined with an expiring deal.

so even if you don't want to build through the draft, then we have to USE the draft a tool and ASSET to make a trade like one for lebron, melo, yao, or whomever would become available.

I agree with the premise here. We need to start adding flexible assets to our roster and slowly let the the less flexbile ones go. If we can build our roster with solid young players and reasonably priced players, we'll be in a better position when the chance comes along to acquire a top level guy.
