DISABLED PLAYER EXCEPTION – can only be used to acquire one player. Max salary 50% of the injured player’s salary, or the average salary, whichever is less. Approval from the league (based on a determination by an NBA-designated physician) is required for this exception to be used to sign a free agent, or to create room to accept a salary in a trade. If player is disabled between July 1 and November 30, team must acquire replacement player within 45 days. If the player is disabled between December 1 and June 30, and the physician determines that the player will be out the entire following season as well, then the team has until October 1 to sign a replacement.

NYK – Houston went back on the IL in December, so if NYK gets this exception they have until October 1 to use it. This would basically give the NYK another MLE, cuz Houston’s contract is greater than the average salary. Better than MLE cuz they can sign a player with it, trade for a player with it, or use it to sign and trade for a player with it. If they get this I’d sign and trade Kurt and Seattle native Jamal for Ray Allen, then use the disabled player exception to sign and trade for his understudy Flip Murray. Isiah can always threaten to just outright sign him for the full MLE (which would be at least $40 million), causing Seattle to have to match that (and if they have Crawford on board they probably wouldn’t want to match that big a contract) or lose him for nothing. A pick is better than nothing and the NYK has 2 extra late 1st rounders now, or maybe a future 2nd and cash would be enough to get it done, you never know. And NYK would still have the actual MLE left. Or he can just use it on a UFA, I like Murray though, so I’d prefer that. This will give them a lot more options if they get this exception. We’ll see.

Thats exactly what we need, to spend 40mm $ on flip murray, and while I do like flip as a back up, hes better than Crawford, he still represents an undersized inconsistent SG. He's worth 3 years 10mm at a maximum.

If we cant get him for that price, we shouldnt over pay by 30mm$ so we own him.

At one point, in the beginning of last year, Flip played outstanding offensive basketball in replacement for Ray. But we have to BEWARE of the FACt that he was benched because of DEFENSE and started to play wildly inconsistent on offense. Can he be a 15-20 minute player? Absolutely, he can be many teams sixth man type. But thats the problem, we already are paying a sixth man [uh-hum] 60mm$

Can there be worst choices for an entire MLE---well of course, there is no doubt about it. Heck even the Spurs kind of blew it with Brent Barry. We have spent a LOt of money, we overspend at every corner we take. instead of finding a player to spend money on, lets find a system to play, a coach that will implement that system and then we can acquire the players that fit.

The NY Knicks are to focused on the $ part of the game, than the game itself. They are the Monte Hall's of the nBA and when they open the curtain, its usually a duck.

it does open some options. It would essentially allow us a 2nd MLE. I believe you cant trade that exception as well, and I can tell you it could easily fetch us another pick.

Another option would be to use the exception on a guy like Hunter, and still have the MLE to split on Ariza and maybe a guy like Charlie Bell I mentioned in another thread (26, tough defender, averaging 25ppg)

Briggs, just curious, what makes Flip murray better than crawford?

I guaranteee you if flip was on the knicks and crawford was on seattle, it would be the other way around..

i have a question - if we TRADE allan houston to another team before he retires, does that team still get the disabled player exception if he retires immediately after he's traded? and would the salary be paid by insurance?

b/c if that's the case, then it's possible to trade houston THIS summer for a team looking to dump bigtime.

i wouldn't do it b/c i want to trim payroll but i just wanted to know if that's an option or not.

EDIT - but wait, that also means his remaining two years, even tho they're paid by insurance, would still count against the cap, right?

I know a player can retire then be traded. His salary still counts against the cap for the first year even though insurance usually pays 80%. Minn did this with Terrell Brandon

You're right. Even though Crawford is not a good player, he's better than Flip. Im very down on Crawford right now. I hope and pray that they put him on a weight training regimen. I always thought Craw would be a solid prospect as a PG. Because he has on occasion, gone off and scored big points, they are trying to make him a SG and he's better suited to just run a team and distribute.

IF Craw can put on the weight AND the Knicks make him the primary back up PG where he defends the other teasm 1 instead of 2s and occasionally flip him over as a combo in a 24-26 minute role, things could work out. 45 minutes as a 2G? NO

the thing that makes me dislike Crawford is the way he acts, he runs like *****, he acts like a *****, he hides behind the 3 pt line like a *****, he doesnt like contact, and it appears he is as tough as a flower. When you are used to guys like Starks, Sprewell, Ward Greg Anthony Derek Harper, this guy is like a nightmare. he represents nothing about NY. Ny is a tough town, and he is a *****.

Livingston is $$$

He's only started a handful of games, and he almost had a triple double last night.... I've seen some of the passes he makes - amazing

Only thing he needs to work on is his jumper

not everything he does equates to stats on the Clips, cuz they just aren't used to his funky passes... put him on a team like Phoenix and he'll be dominating
David f'n Lee for President!!
