Draftcity has the Knicks taking him at the end of the 1st round. This what they say:
The first thing you notice about Mickaël Gelabale is his great athleticism and his smooth movements. The guy can jump out of the gym and he’s quite fast. Combine this with a 6-8 body and a very good wingspan, and we can start talking about some very nice physical potential for him in the wing.

But Gelabale is more than his athleticism and his long body, he’s a player with skills that are already good enough to be very valuable to any team, particularly his shooting and his defense, and with the potential to develop other abilities nicely as well.

The consistency he shows with his jumpshot is quite remarkable. He’s usually money in the bank when he’s open up to 18-19 feet. He can also nail the three-pointer with fairly good accuracy, but he still hasn’t fully mastered it. He shows nice mechanics and he’s fairly quick on the release, which is also pretty high thanks to his vertical. Therefore, he doesn’t even need to be fully open to make it. His shot is mainly static, although he can make it off the dribble too. It’s not the usual pattern, though. He’s a player who tries to minimize risks and make as few mistakes as possible. So he never forces shots unless it’s necessary.

He’s a decent slasher too, and he can become quite a good one. His first step is nothing out of this world, but he has handles, athleticism and the footwork to fill the bill. Like it happens with his shooting, he doesn’t take too many chances, so it’s not the most usual thing to see him try and penetrate. He waits for a good option, finds the opening, and takes advantage of it. He likes to run the floor a lot, and he has already finished this season some spectacular alley-oops in transition.

On defense, he’s hard to beat, really hard if a screen isn’t used. He has very good lateral defensive speed and his long arms are a nightmare for the opponents. His defense is not really very aggressive, but his intensity is constant and he’s usually focused. He has the tools to become a very good rebounder, and he can make some nasty blocks if needed, but he rarely risks his defensive position for a rejection.

Gelabale shows decent basketball IQ. He seems comfortable on the court, he knows the game. Concerning his character, he shows a good attitude, being very serious on the floor, always focused, always willing to work, always thinking first about the team. Because that’s what the Frenchman is, a team player.

Yea thats exactly what I thought when I first read it...The Knicks need a player that can hold his own defensively and this guy seems like he definitely can. The offesnse will continue to develop.

Real Madrid is a great team there... in fact I think thats where Vujanic plays. Only problem is this cat is 22 and doesnt get ANY playing time.

Wouldnt you rather get a college guy that you have some tape on for the last 2-3 years?

Much rather take a project like Andray Blatche at that spot. Remember, we will have 14-15 guys so a couple are going to be on IR like it or not.

sure I love Andray but it would depend on what we do earlier in the raft. We need our Euro scout Darkknicks to give us a report on Gelabale!

A little thin, isnt this guy? I think DarkKnicks posted that this guy was good on defense and was athletic but had no shot to speak of.

has anyone seen him play? Are we just going on what one scout says? Hell.. nbadraft.net when scouting Deshawn Stevenson said this: NBA comparison: Michael Jordon.

Lets get a guy thats dominated at *some* level. This is why I'm high on Blatche. He may take a couple years but we need a pipeline. Not every kid has to be a star in year one.

I dont mind drafting a foreign player at all and letting him develope into a nice player. What I have a problem with is taking them in the lottery unless they are a clear cut star like Yao

Blatche? because he dominated high school? I dominated high school as well, maybe i should throw my name in the nba draft this year.

you did? Are you 6'11? Did you average 28 and 12 with 10 blocks a game? If you did maybe you *should* enter the draft. Or if your playing in Europe, and are 22 and averaging 3 points and 1 rebound maybe you should enter the draft as well. Hell, maybe we all should.

My point is your going on what one guy has written, and its always good. Has anyone seen him play? Has he ever dominated at any level? He's old by draft standards to be getting ZERO playing time.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Avoid him!!!!
This guy is very athletic and has good attitude, that's true BUT his jumper is PRETTY mediocre. He is ok when he is free, but that's not a lot to ask. Also, he has no heart (I don't care much about this, but some people do), he plays with the same expresion always. He is not good at making decitions and finally his defense is not that good. This kind of players represent what's going wrong in the NBA...
And by the way, Real Madrid WAS a very good team. It has been 6 years since they don't win the championship, not even reaching the play-offs in one of their recent seasons. This year they are playing good, but I doubt they win anything.
Gelabale is similar to Ariza, but with a worse defense and skills.
BTW I hate Real Madrid

I wouldn't be surprised if this was our late first rounder. According to zeke206, an insider on the realgm boards who's called a number of NY transactions before they've gone down, one player in particular caught Isiah's eye on his recent scouting trip in Europe. Supposedly, he's an "athletic defensive forward/guard." Take it for what it's worth, but this Gelabale kid seems to match that profile pretty well. Of course, it could be a different player that Isiah has in mind, or NY might end up going in a different direction, or zeke206's info may be bogus on this occasion (but he does have good credentials based on past performance).

BTW, the reference for that info is here:

You might notice that this takes place in the context of a thread where zeke206 predicts the Knicks signing of Jermaine Jackson on Feb. 27th (they officially signed him March 1st).

thats a better idea. We are going to have issues with roster spots anyway. MAybe we take him in the 2nd round and get him to sign with a team where he will actually get some playing time.

I have no problem (in fact I think we should) use the #2 for a prospect that doesnt come over right away.
