Can't escape Marbury mistake
Mar 15, 2005

"Well, let's recap: Had they given Houston away and given up on making the playoffs, the Knicks would be going into next season with the expiring contracts of Eisley and Anderson, with a Dwight Howard or Emeka Okafor or another lottery pick already on the roster, with another lottery pick coming from this year's draft, and enough money to sign free agents or make deals.

Instead, they didn't win a playoff game last year, might not make the playoffs this year, their payroll projects to $103 million next season and they won't see cap relief for at least two years beyond that.
"

Your thoughts?

Would have been awesome to have Howard and have a shot at getting Bogut. But what happened happened. Gotta move on.

Hope this team will have a better draft position at the end of the season, hopefully close to 5th pick.

Silly article. How do you "give Houston away"? A team has to want him to do that. And there's no way our team would have been bad enough to get Howard or Okafor. We still had Van Horn who was actually playing solidly back then and nice role players and we winning enough to finish with maybe the 7th pick.

I'll take two years if it means serious contention, and that's what I've seen so far.

We expected the playoffs this year, and hoped for second round (not happening...though, I still believe if we beat the heat today...can shaq go back to back to back games, or will the pounding resemble last year vs. the Pistons?)

Next year I was figuring second round for sure.

The year after seriously contending.

So far, on pace...this year's january could not have been forseen (I mean, 3 wins the entire month...is that even logical?)

all kool aid all the time.

They're talking about when he was a free agent. Just letting him walk as opposed to siging him to 100 mm.

when you say we will seriously contend two years from now, what is our line up? is it with the players that are here now? fantasy players? draft players trades et al?

Oh, I didn't read the full article; I just read what was posted here. Did Houston get the $100 mil contract before or after helping the Knicks get to the finals in 1999 and making the all-star team (I forget which year)?

he got the contract after we made the finals in 99. Then we traded Ewing for Rice & Travis Then H20 & Spree made the allstar team in the 2000-2001 the last time we had an allstar.

they chose to sign H20 for 100mil instead of giving Ewing the money he wanted to finish his career in New York. Because the backwards thinking thanks to the media once again convinced them that he was holding the team back when in reality he would've been a great expiring contract and would have retired a Knick and we'd most like be in the playoff picture right now

some of this makes sense, some parts are idiotic.

im afraid the knicks are caught in a conudrum. by the time the Miami Detroits and next year the Pacers[again] are done ruling the east, we will be a very old team.

were stuck in the middle of the lake without a paddle, anyone who can look at things without rose-colored glasses will agree. there are teams above us with elite players and young teams with elite players for example howard lebron okafor Bosh etc... we are littered with 30 YO and still no tangible plan that I see. we need luck, i hate to say it we need a lot of luck.

Well Briggs, how long do you think it will be before the Pacers/Pistons/Heat are done ruling? We'll have several of are veterans expiring over the next couple years. We'll also have a number of draft picks coming up. I think you got lulled into that old and untalented forever theme from the dark ages. We're slowly getting younger.

exactly; plus Marbury is the only veteran whose age matters. The others are not part of the long-term plan. And if Marbury takes good care of his body, he can have about seven more very good seasons. (Gary Payton was very good at age 35.)

You're right Bonn, but this is what is on Briggs mind. Either some team gets really stupid with one of their young bigs (Like Philly and Dalembert) or we start losing a lot, and somehow, someway, win the lotto. We've been showing a lot of flashes this year, but we really do need an all star big at center, and/or a guy like Warrick. We need a defensive anchor, as he once said.
