who do you think are our core players for the future and who we should hold on to, our stopgap players to remain competetive now, or who's role are yet to be determined (limbo)?

marbury - core
crawford - core
penny - stopgap
houston - DONE
tim - limbo
penny - stopgap
ariza - core
sweets - core
malik - stopgap
mo - stopgap
jyd - stopgap
kurt - stopgap
butler - limbo
bruno - stopgap

sounds about right. the problem is that our stopgaps will all be here for years. and most of them aren't getting any younger, or better. i'd love to see some of them simply bought out and we bring in picks or cheap free agents with something to prove.

if $$$'s don't mean jack, then how about this:

BUY OUT jyd and buy another #1 pick this season giving us 6 #1 picks over two years.

I think there's no problem with the end of the bench having players like Rose, Taylor and even a Penny. As long as those guys are motivated, they are often far more savvy than other teams benches. The problem is when these guys have to play other teams front line starters. We really have a team of savy backups surrounding Marbury and Craw. We need some core frontline bigs. As long as we can afford the pricey backups, they're a huge luxury. But without an all-star big, it's a bit of a silly luxury.

I think guys that are going to be here more that a year should be core. Stopgap is a year to me... maybe a year and half. Taylor, Rose and JYD are core players to me. I dont see them going anywhere unless there is a #1 attached to them, in which I HOPE they dont go anywhere.

I think the plan is to add two players. Another combo wing player and a 7 footer. Steven Hunter and Marquis Daniels are feasable to me. Both are young and present long term additions to the 'core'

Then you start the year with 2 young guys thats are clearly part of the team and VERY solid depth and balance.

Marbury/Crawford
Daniels/Penny
TT/Ariza/Rose
Sweetney/Taylor/JYD
KT/Hunter

Thats your 12 man roster. I would be pretty happy with that

I think you'll find that it is impossible for any player to get younger. No?

That said, I agree that the long contractual commitments we have to these "stopgaps" is quite alarming.

I also question whether Marbury can still be a "core" to this team after all the stopgaps are replaced with more "core" players. (Assuming the stopgaps are not replaced with longer contracts of other stopgaps)

Any guy who can be traded any given year because they are towards the end of their contracts is not a CORE player. He is a true stopgap
