He may have only played in seven games this season, but according to Mark Monteith of the Indianapolis Star Jonathan Bender's latest attempt at a break out season may once again be over early, the young Pacers forward might have to sit out the rest of the season while rehabilitating the right knee he injured in September.

While Pacers officials are not ready to admit defeat just yet, with only 27 games remaining in the season they do acknowledge that Bender is not close to returning.

Bender has gone on and off the injured list throughout the season, but has been on it since Feb. 4. All that's known for sure now is that he won't come back until he's fully healed.

"We're going to forget about this coming-in and going-out stuff," team president Larry Bird said. "It's a distraction to the team."

Bender is equally determined to bring closure to the series of leg injuries that have haunted him.

"I want to resolve it," he said. "I want to get it over with. Forever."

Just when that will happen, however, remains a mystery. Bender met with physical therapist Dan Dyrek in New York on Saturday before the Pacers played the Knicks.

"He's continuing to make improvements, but I wouldn't say there's any short-term possibility of him being activated," coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's more of a long-range thing. If he keeps doing well, then it's possible before the end of the season we can activate him."

bender's deal:
05/06 - $7.1
06/07 - $7.8

would you guys take a flier on him although he's constantly hurt?

kurt + sweetney for bender + #1

(this is why i'm pissed at the mo deal b/c we could've given them vin and cash instead)

I don't think they would have taken Vin and Mooch for Bender, I think they would have wanted a draft pick thrown in too.....No way do I do KT and Sweets for Bender and a #1...Bender's injury history is so long especially at such a young age, you have to be wary...if Indy released him or wanted something like KT for Bender and a pair of #1's (their # 1 will be really low, which is another problem) I may do it...to put it in context, if not for Cleveland not wanting to take on the length of KT's contract we could have gotten Gooden who is 200 times the player Bender is without the injury problems...Bender's value has to be at an all time low right now....at least at this point I don't see much of anything in him.

not for those 2 guys. We knock KT and most agree we need to go in a different direction but KT is a good player. Isiah knows more about him than anyone.. I'm thinking something more like JYD and a #2

Bender is too injury prone and do we really need a Marcus Camby clone.

No chance I do that deal. Bender has been in the league a few years and has barely done anything b/c of his inuries. Plus, that draft pick will be pretty low. Kurt Thomas will be around for another couple of years and can be very helpful if we start winning again (In the next couple of years) and Sweetney is getting better, hopefully. I'm taking my chances with them.

The trade you proposed is awful. I would do KT for Bender and a 2nd rounder. ;)
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

not even KT. Maybe KT and a #1.

KT has solid value around this league and when you read that the Cle coaches ALL wanted KT and were willing to give up Gooden it reafirms that. Only the $$$ got in the way.

KT and sweetney are alot, i agree. i was just throwing some stuff out there. but the way i see it, indiana is a .500 team and will return a pick in the mid to late teens.

we have a logjam at PF so we need to ship one of them out.

bender is injury prone but he's got hella potential. i think if we said we could trade kurt for bender straight up before this season, EVERYBODY would've jumped on it. swapping sweetney for the #16 pick was to make the $$$'s work.

it may be too much but bender is crazy young, long, and can play multiple positions. he is pure upside but is injury prone. so it depends on the direction you want to go.

and there we have it. kurt is really good and is a solid player but he's not the right fit for us. i like him but we have to move forward already. that $$$'s is part of the package so even though GM's may want him, they really don't want him b/c of that contract. it's tough. it just seems that as long as he's in the starting lineup here, we will be nothing more than mediocre at best. even with our current roster with ZERO centers, i would've STILL traded kurt for ruben patterson.

I def would not trade KT and Sweets for him but even with his injury problems he is still an interesting player becuase of his combination of height and guard skills. To touch on what DJSUNYC said about KT, I'm still a firm believer that if we had a tall athletic power forward or center who could post up and play the center or the 4 then KT would be perfect alongside him... that's when KT's true skills would show.

I've always liked McDyess, I mean Bender. Athletic 23 year old 7 footer with a bum knee. I'd be willing to trade Sweetney for Bender Straight up. He's in the mold of Garnett. I don't think anyone else on this board, let alone Isiah would do it, though.

I would't trade neither Sweetney or Ariza for an older injury riddled toothpick
