I love all the talk around here about the value of expiring contracts! It's really hilarious how stupid some poster are! Like big fat contracts for players unworthy of them are some commodity to be stock piled...

Here's a plan. Let's go out there and find any 3 unsigned scrubs and sign them for $10 MM a year so that in their expiring year we can trade them to anyother team for their scrubs! I wonder why
all the GMs aren't doing this!

Morons.

This way in 08 when Allan comes off the books, we can......never mind.

The Knick way..........Look forward to what we can obtain with expiring contracts!

The answer: Longer deals with players other teams dump! Its like taking over an bad lease on a car somebody can't afford.

Like how the Pistons acquired that scrub no one wanted Rasheed Wallace? And won a championship?

Expiring deals are good assets. The problem is acquiring a deal like Mo Taylor's and looking forward to it expiring in three years - that's stupid. But expiring deals can be very valuable. And sometimes one team's problem is another team's savior.

It doesn't always work, but when you inherit a cap situation as bad as the Knicks, it's one of the only ways to go. And let's be real: Isiah inherited this cap from Layden. They were screwed beyond belief until the end of Houston's deal because of Layden. Layden signed Houston, Shandon, Eisley, traded Ewing for Longley and Rice instead of letting him expire, signed Weatherspoon to a max MLE... it goes on and on. I'm not going to blame Isiah for the team's cap woes, it's the way New York has always done business. I will blame him if he drafts poorly or makes any disastrous trades like trading Nene and Camby for McDyess. Trading Vin Baker and Moochie for Mo Taylor, while it allowed ESPN to ridicule the Knicks again, isn't a disaster. Nor is trading Nazr for two first round picks.

I'm not looking for Mo T to expire...I'm looking for him to Contribute.

Now, why is that so far fetched?

I agree but you have to be realistic. This teams needs another star or 2. We only have one and he's not even an allstar in Marbury. And the way you bring in stars is by trading the $28mil expiring contracts of TT & Penny and then trading the $30mil H20/taylor the following year for another star.

Expiring contracts have value, but Isiah is trading contracts that expire this year or next for contracts that expire in three years. That makes no sense.

it does make sense since this team is strapped over the cap til 2007 anyway because of Allan Houston. if taylor's contract didn't expire in 2yrs like H20's then I would be pissed

True, it does make sense if you look at it that way, but why should he add Mo's contract at all? Why not just let Baker and Moochie expire and not worry about Mo? Can you also sign on AIM please?

Plus, aren't we more likely to suck and get better draft picks without the Mo Taylor types?

I think its a nice gamble on a player who is still 28 and JVG has a history of putting guys in the dog house... remember Camby? but most importantly allowing baker & moochie's $6mil to expire is going to do nothing for the current cap situation. And trading those 2 small contracts isn't going to get you a star. Trading Taylor's $10mil contract as it gets closer to expiring can get you a VERY good player whereas baker's & moochie's 6mil likely wont. The best you can do for 6mil is a vet which we dont need or a guy like Kwame which i know you don't like.

$10mil verses $6mil can be the difference between getting Brand(for example) versus Kwame.

Then you buy the idea that it makes sense to trade two shorter expiring contracts for a longer expiring contract?
