Isiah Thomas: Well, when you look at the expiring contracts that we will have this summer, we still have close to $30 million in expiring contracts to go out and play with this summer
Does anyone (Fish?) still think the plan is to let expiring contracts just expire and slightly trim payroll? Look at the Knicks' history of decisions with expiring contracts. Look at Isiah's statement right above.

if you look at what's happening with expiring contracts, that's really how some teams are acquiring talent if you're not under the cap. With Maurice Taylor's third year, it becomes an expiring contract, which becomes a huge asset to us.
He's already thinking about eventually trading Mo Tayler's expiring contract. He's even more forward-thinking about expiring contracts than I am. I'm not crazy about the Houston trade but I see his point that you probably can get more in 2 years for Mo Tayler's expiring contract than you can for Vin and Moochie's this summer. I'm not sure it's worth the 1 year wait, though.

exactly we'll have another 30mil in expiring deals to use after 2008! with H20 & Taylor. As bad as taylors contract is its the same as Shandon's was and you get a heck of a lot more out of Taylor. Worst case scenario they can buy him out.

But will we ever have the talent to win a championship?

Time will tell. You need to make a lot of good decisions AND have luck on your side because your key players have to be healthy

I don't know ask Detroit. They used expiring contracts to get rasheed and they won a championship.

knicks weren't getting under he cap anyway until after 008 when Houston's and now Taylor's contracts expire. If Taylor contract lasted past 2008 then I'd be furious right now! and its not which I'm sure is the exact reason why Isiah made the trade. He added yet another future valuable expiring contract.

but we might with the expiring contracts of TT & Penny. Then we'll top it off with the expiring contracts of H20/Taylor.

of course Taylor and Rose could be traded before their expiring years in a trade where their contracts are required to make the trade work. Like Taylor or Rose + a future draft pick for a Zach Randolph type.

We're at Isiah's mercy. I would prefer that the Knicks tank and get under the cap. I think this way reduces the margin for error.

I agree but that never happening in New York. Especially when you already have the maxed contracts of Houston, Marbury and Crawford locked up for a long time

If we get Jalen Rose in the off season, that will add another 17 million to what will come off the bookd with H20 and Mo Taylor. Thats 47 million in the 06-07 season. That is enough room to make real things happen for whatever free agent's we want, and in the rare chance that we let the money fall off the books, we are about as close to being under the cap as I can imagine in the foreseeable future. Yeah trade some and let some fall off and its a win win.

BTW, I agree with what he said about Mo taylor for vinny and moochie. We got nothing from them, Mo taylor is a good player, I'd like to see what he can do.

All of MAlik Rose's toughness and championship experience, well, thats still a ? from me, but we'll soon see.
