How good a passer is Sweeney? I don't get to watch a lot of games but from the little I've seen he is not a good passer and from the stats he gets almost no assists and his assist to turnover ratio is terrible. Yet people on the board keep saying he is a good passer. Can someone explain the descrepancy?

Sweets does seem to be black hole out there at times.

Sweet's stat could be function of other people around him. Is the post pass good.... are players cutting... are players moving to the open 3 point shot... do the other players hit the open shots.

I still think Sweets is getting used to playing in the post this year. Watch for him next year to become a better passer out of the post.

I say he's a good passer. Just because a guy doesnt get a lot of assists doesnt mean he's not a good passer. He makes good passes out of the post and has done an OK job when the double team comes.

So much of passing though is comfort, timing and knowing where guys are. Its harder to lock that down when your getting 10-15 minutes a night. I dont see Mike forcing a lot of shots, and when he does most of the time he draws contact.

Take Nazr for example. When was the last time you saw him pass the ball out of the post?

Most of his TO aren't from bad passes or getting the ball stolen from him. Its from traveling violations or charges. He is still learning. But the team can live with the ball in his hands.

He needs to make his moves quicker. Like as soon as he controls the ball.

Sweet made a couple of nice passes out of doubles last night that had me thinking he's getting it. He's not a selfish player. Sure he's coached to take the ball to the rim whenever he gets it down low. But he'll make a nice interior pass every once in a while, and the one I noticed yesterday was a simple skip pass out of the double to wide open Jamal who nailed a 3. Passing isn't his main deficiency. It's D.

i don't think he's all that great a passer, but he's got great hands receiving passes from other people...& he finishes around the basket or gets fouled almost everytime he catches the ball in the low post...if he ever develops that midrange jumper to be consistent he can maybe be an allstar calibre player.

The NBA post game is a whole new different world from Georgetown. From what I understand, he was a good passer in college. It sometimes takes years for these guys to adjust. I think, right now it's clear, that Sweetney and Nazr have been focusing primarily on scoring in the post, and really nothing else. It takes a long time to get a feel for the game of basketball, especially in the NBA. And if you wanna be a good passer, you also have to have a good feel for the game (Just like scoring as well, really). I'm really not too concerned about Sweetney's passing right now. I'm more concerned about his weight.

Thanks for the feed back.

Bernard - I agree about the D. From what I've seen he's really slow reacting on D.

Sweetney needs minutes and not to be so fat. He's around 280 right now... no way he's less, and he's easily gained 20 pounds since Nov.

He's still very young, but its a fair concern.

You really think he's gained 20 pounds since November? I'd have to go back and look at tapes from earlier in the season. How could he let that happen?

Seriously. Sweetney could be a very good player if he lost weight and added more strength. He has good quickness and a good feel for the game.

yeah, but he also needs to stay out of foul trouble & learn how to play better defense...otherwise he's just a role player on most teams.
