Just a question....we all play ball here I suppose from time to time and are probably in some local rec center in their free time to play some pick up.....

Question: Is illegal screen something that you would call in a regular pick up game? Did I mention the ball wasn't checked yet?

I just wanna know......i personally think it's a biotch call.

The example is before the ball is in play, I try to run around my defender......of course giving a bump to another guy. He calls illegal screen. I'm not screening....I'm going to the open space.

With no ref, and the fact we were playing half court and the ball wasn't checked yet.........this is just ridiculous to me. Meanwhile they are trying to throw subtle elbows and little nick nack stuff that If I do it it's illegal.....

I just want some thoughts on this so I can keep my cool next time, before I get banned from my gym for cursing people out and possibly fighting over this.

Here is the unwritten rule of streetball(at least in my town). There is no such thing as an illegal screen. Anyone that calls it gets laughed at(similar to an offensive foul). But there is an unwritten rule where if I feel that you set an illegal screen I am allowed to set what we like to call an "illegal" elbow to the groin.

Baby Bipp! Congrats!

"Bipp" is a great name for marketing! Let St JOhns have first crack at him. If not, coach Hurley at Duke will do will with him. The home games at the "K-Dome" will be great!

Every town is different. The only way to solve your problem is with some good old fashion arguing. Argue for an hour. Grab the ball and pretend you are going to leave. Grab the ball and run to the other foul line and wait it out. Run to the bleachers(if there are bleacher's) and lay down and laugh at the call. Look to the bystanders for someone to back you up and argue on your behalf. All these are acceptable behaviors.

That's how I feel. Offensive fouls, and illegal screen are just somethings that don't get called in any type of pick up game whether it's in the park or the local gym.

Another thing I hate.....when people get loud and try to belittle you in front of people, then when you step to them on some "Ok do we wanna play basketball or do we wanna fight" type of stuff everyone wants to cop pleas.

Where I grew up at if someone makes a bullsyte call you shoot for it and if you call illegal screen or offensive you might as well go find yourself a Sanfransisco treat and go do something to yourself.....if you know what I mean.

I want more ideas on this. I wanna know what people think.

Illegal screen and other offense fouls that lead to baskets are called on rare occassion in games I play in, but possession doesn't change. Moving picks, charges are assumed to have been unintentional ... but they shouldn't lead to a basket, so essentially a mulligan.

Agree that calling it before the check is bogus. If defense doesn't like a screen being set, they don't have to give the ball to the offense until the "illegal" screening stops. No reason to call a foul.

all courts have their own rules, but if offensive fouls were legal I guess we should all practice flying elbows and knees...lets not forget dipping the shoulder as well. Sounds like kick boxing!

i mean, if it just happens once or twice i generally let it go. But if it constantly I think I would say something if i actually cared about the game... illegal screen meaning the offensive player setting the pick moved in the way of the defender??...slowing him down i think its a dirty play...not as dirty as a flying elbow but it wouldnt be appreciated.

the ball doesnt necessary have to change possesions but the play should start over depending on the situation. And for offensive fouls, i dont know about u guys but there are some players that dont stop with the elbows, shoulder dipping, creating rooms for themselves with the move and also calling a "foul" cause he gets touched while using the shoulder dip.... but my point is by shoulder dipping....u are already commiting urself for body contact and the play is illegal....so if there is no offensive foul he can call defensive foul right?

every court has their own rules, sometimes u got to just repect the rules of the house.

If guys are playing dirty you call it. If you are playing jail ball, where guys are trying to seriously hurt you......you stop playing and leave the court.

This is not the case.

I've played with guys that push and shove like crazy but you push back and don't back down. To call and illegal screen before the ball was in play is totally retarded. IF there was a ref and we had uniforms it's a whole different ball game. But still just a basic bump or "checking your man" is a clean play. No real man would call that an illegal screen.

Most of the guys in my gym are ex-college guys and know how to play the game. College is a lot more physical than normal pick-up so it sometimes gets lost in translation with the newbies. Everyone respects each other and doesn't want to hurt each other. But the games are pretty intense and sometimes a screen is set improperly. In general we do what others suggested. We just check it up and nobody loses possession. But what I'm referring to is the guy that doesn't stop the first time you ask him to. After that it's called teaching him a valuable lesson. People generally get the message that they need to be set on their screens after that.

But I agree with enyspree. If you expect to get the ball after calling an illegal screen in my town, guys on your own team would ask you to suck it up.

Yeah I feel you on that house rules stuff. I have a hairline trigger on my temper. We are all playing ball......no one is trying to hurt anyone or cheat. It's just ball. If I bumb you bump back.....and if you don't like the fact that I'm bumping too much then step to me like a man don't call a illegal screen.

Fouling is different.....you know when you hacked someone. You say my bad, give a quick pound and keep playing. If you call it you call it. It's all love. Don't start coplaining like a biotch. That makes me lose my temper. Little kids throw their hands up and cry about it. Men just call it and keep playing.....argue the call if you have to. If it's that serious where you wanna get all hyped up.....then let's fight otherwise shut the heck up and play ball.

shoot. i completely misinterpreted this thread.

when you say recreational ball, i'm thinking a nice game of pocket pool with an eight ball in the side pocket if you smell what i'm cookin'?

i haven't played a pickup game in about 2 years and am currently 10 lbs overweight BUT i did just start training and am attempting a comeback.

Ok illegal screening doesnt really exist, nor do offensive fouls. Where Im from no one ever calls ***** stuff like that. However, if its something that continually happens and they are hard illegal, or moving screens you will def get bitched out. Point is yea you can do stuff like that, but if it happens every play then you arent playing real basketball. Usually how we respond to it in my area is you get hit hard back the next play. So the best thing to do is to try and avoind doing stupid stuff that you know is illegal because then the game is no longer basketball, its football. Which is fine sometimes, but not all the time. Just be aware of what you are doing because there is nothing that pisses me off more than someone playing on the courts who doesnt know what they are doing and they are just throwing their body around. Uusually have to throw down against idiots like that.

I never went in for that nickel and dime stuff when it comes to calling fouls.I usually dont call anything until around point-game when a cheap foul from the other side can change the outcome of the game.

I agree about getting laughed off the court for calling an offensive foul or a moving pick, unless a person gets clothelined then all bets are off.

Lots of times guys call these fouls when the game is wearing them down and they want to catch their breath and stall with a little arguing.

Sometimes you have waited an hour to have "next" and you know if you lose you have to wait another hour to get on the court. Then it turns into the freaking "people's court" cause noone wants to leave.

EnySpree,I wouldnt get too upset over it.Instead of getting PO'd just tell the guy that the preschoolers are coming in next and they call moving picks.

Good stuff guys....I just wanted to know what the rest of the world though. I Know growing up in Brooklyn calling an illegal screen would probably get you in a fight real fast.....especially if the ball hasn't been checked yet.......to me that is just so stupid.

Oh well I'm stuck with these guys till it gets warmer. I guess they will get me in shape.....I'm just not gonna let them get away with these country club calls....

I just hope I don't get myself kicked out of the gym man......I know myself. I totally lose it over a game of basketball.....I take it personal especially when guys are jawing at me when they are messing up also......that's another killer.

I play at the Y and illegal screens just don't exist. In MY town if someone got whupped on a screen, the play stops when the victim calls a "foul" then you do the paper, scissors, rock thing. Savvy eh?

Basketball, like anything else, can be a very humbling sport. It just so happens that a lot of people who play it tend to have big egos. Hence, the people with these egos are going to point fingers, no matter how bad they make themselves look. It gets very frustrating at times, but truth is, you just have to continue to do your thing, and see how you can get better.

Here's a thing I HATE. I like to play around the perimeter and and post equally, and I am a big. But I HATE when people tell me to ONLY stay in the low post, and then they don't even give me the ball at all, even if I do give myself good position, which is most of the time.
