The troubled Toronto Raptors have another problem to deal with — forward Eric Williams wants out.

In the wake of another heated argument between point guard Rafer Alston and coach Sam Mitchell, Williams wants to be traded to a team that will use him.

"No one is benefiting right now. This isn't good for the Raptors or for Eric," Mark Bartlestein, the agent for Williams, said Thursday. "If there is a deal that can be done, it makes no sense to keep him here. He wants to play. He just doesn't want to collect a paycheck."

Before being acquired from New Jersey in the trade for Vince Carter on Dec. 17, Williams averaged 35 minutes a game. In Toronto, he's averaging 19.9 minutes per game. But ever since he was demoted from the starting lineup after a 16-game run as Jalen Rose's replacement, he has barely played — including sitting out the last two games.

Toronto general manager Rob Babcock said Williams hasn't played because of Rose's recent strong play and because of the team's depth at small forward.

"I know he's frustrated and I understand that. I'm disappointed that I have to read about it in the media," Babcock said.

Williams, who wasn't happy with being traded after signing with his hometown Nets over the summer, also is disturbed by the turmoil surrounding the Raptors.

"It's distracting," Bartlestein said. "It's hard to sit there and watch everybody else blow up around you when you feel like you're being a done a major injustice."

Bartlestein said another of his clients, Aaron Williams, also is disturbed by the turmoil. Aaron Williams also was acquired in the Carter trade.

"No one likes to be in an environment where there is chaos every day. It's just not enjoyable. It's not fun to go to work. Would you want to go to work where every day there is maybe a street fight?," Bartlestein said.

Alston and Mitchell argued during halftime of Tuesday's loss against Cleveland. Alston didn't come out of the dressing room for the second half and was seen crying as he was escorted to the team bus by security during the fourth quarter. On Wednesday, Alston said Mitchell owed him an apology.

Babcock refused to confirm or deny that Mitchell challenged Alston to a fight.

Alston had just returned to the Raptors following a two-game suspension after he stormed out of practice last week.

"Do I expect Rafer to be happy right now? No. I understand why he is not happy right now. I am not happy right now. I don't think Sam is happy right now," Babcock said.

Babcock met with Mitchell earlier Thursday and talked about how Mitchell should work with Alston and Williams.

"Did we meet today especially because of the situation with Rafer and Eric? That was one of the key things that we talked about, absolutely," Babcock said. "We're doing everything we can to address those issues."

In the last 11 months, the Raptors have fired general manager Glen Grunwald and coach Kevin O'Neill and dealt Carter after he demanded out. Babcock has been criticized for getting little in return for Carter, who seems rejuvenated in New Jersey. Alonzo Mourning, also acquired in the three-for-one trade, hasn't reported to Toronto.

"Everyone on the outside is saying this is a dysfunctional bunch. It doesn't look like a dysfunctional bunch to me," Babcock said. "Sam is a rookie head coach and Rafer is a rookie starting point guard and I am a rookie general manager. We're all learning about this job. There is a lot to deal with, there's no question."

i would love to bring both Williams to NY...those are the type of blue collar, hardworking players that we need more of.

anyone think an offer of Penny, KT & Moochie for Rose, EWill & ATrain would get it done?
then sign a Jamal Sampson off the waiver wire to round out the roster.

C - ATrain / Baker / Sundov
PF - Sweetney / JYD / Sampson
SF - EWill / TT
SG - Rose / Ariza
PG - Marbury / Brewer
IR - Houston / Crawford / Nazr

on another note, that part about Rafer crying as he was being led to the team bus is just pathetic...i used to think he'd make a good backup PG on this team, but that type of immaturity & selfishness is the last thing we need...he needs to go back to playing in the NDBL or some other developmental league & learn how lucky he is to be playing this game at this level & making the money he's making.

who much money does that save them? I would like to get Araujo in that deal as well. At least come away with one younger piece, even if he's not that good so far.

It seems like you have a fetish for over the hill players. How about let's hope isiah and dolan somewhat stick to their plan of continually getting younger. I would rather trade Kt for nothing, zero, then take back players who are really much worse than him and old. I believe it is in our best interests to concentrate all assets on rebuilding a young, strong frontline that can stay together for years rather than some half-hearted attempt to go 39-43 and win the poor Atlantic, or worse off, lose by a game and have the 14th pick.

dude, i'm offering up Penny, KT & Moochie for Rose, EWill & Atrain...you make it sound as if i was asking for Sweetney, Ariza & Crawford to be traded.

i think that's a stretch...regardless of BRIGGS opinion, i think this deal makes the team better & achieves the goal of freeing up time for Sweetney to become our starting PF & seeing what the kid can really do...Rose for Penny? that's a steal for the Knicks imo, regardless of the added year of salary...overall it only saves TOR $1.3 million or so, but it gets rid of 2 disgruntled players & an albatross contract in favor of 1 that expires after next season with which they can have more flexibility with to make deals next season...& it gets them a solid backup for Bosh as well, & you know Moochie would never cry about his minutes or his role to Mitchell.

the way it looks, Isiah may be going after williams. I like the guy, but if we are not going to get a draft pick out of Toronto, there is no reason to make that deal...I have yet to hear the Knicks showing interest on the player that I wish for them to acquire....Philly and N.J. may go after Jamal Sampson, and if they do, Isiah will for ever regret it....Just like the deal for Carter, I believe that Isiah could have done that deal, because it was on the table....He should have given the players that Toronto had demanded except for Marburry.....

I'm also tired of lateral moves and trying to be a .500 team. Rebuild.

No...no...no to the Williamses. We have to stop adding role players. Role players are useless to teams that suck.

fair enough guys...i know it seems like lateral moves here...but when you break it down player by player, i think the Knicks make out on that one...but that's cool if y'all want to rebuild.

from the other thread discussing Isiah possibly being interested in EWill:

the Williams brothers for JYD perhaps? the dollars seem to match there...i wonder if Isiah would make such a deal? not a blockbuster by any stretch, but it would get us 2 solid role players for the price of 1 at least...none of the 3 are young whippersnappers anyway...i would hate to lose JYD, but the other 2 guys could help this team more than he can alone imo...& JYD is still a very popular player in TOR & there's no doubt in my mind that Sam Mitchell would love to have him on his team...you actually SAVE money for the Knicks in that deal as well since ATrain's contract expires a year before JYD's does while EWill's expires the same year.

C - Nazr / ATrain / Baker
PF - KT / Sweetney
SF - Ariza / EWill / TT
SG - Crawford / Penny
PG - Marbury / Brewer
IR - Houston / Moochie / Sundov

Isiah Thomas has yet to speak with Toronto about small forward Eric Williams, who has publicly asked for a trade. But Thomas is expected to make an inquiry before the Feb. 24 trading deadline.

Thomas looked into Williams when the Newark native was a free agent last summer. Williams signed with the Nets in a three-year, $12 million deal, most of the mid-level exception.

Williams, 32, is not the young piece Isiah craves. But he can get him cheap, for Jerome Williams, a former Toronto fan favorite.

Why would any rational Knick fan want these two mediocre old players on a rebuilding team? It makes no sense.

u get cap relief in that deal, didn't you just read my post? that right there helps in the rebuilding process because you have ATrain's expiring contract to deal after next season...& EWill can fill JYD's role just as well.

i don't understand the problem you guys have in minor moves like this that don't hurt the team's cap situation going forward
