Top 5 trade prospects By Sean Deveney - SportingNews
Sure, the All-Star break is amusing, but the real NBA fun peaks the following Thursday, on the league's trading deadline. For these five, we'd advise a call to a local realtor.
1. Kurt Thomas, PF, Knicks. Thomas repeatedly has done the one thing that seems unforgivable within the Knicks organization -- he has sparred with franchise favorite Stephon Marbury. The team needs to get second-year forward Mike Sweetney on the floor more, and moving Thomas would allow that.
2. Clifford Robinson, PF, Warriors. Robinson is serving a five-game suspension for violating the league's drug policy, but that's unlikely to keep him from being an ideal trade target for contending teams. He's a veteran big man who can shoot from the perimeter and defend. Plus, his contract is up this year.
3. Donyell Marshall, PF, Raptors. Toronto has tried to package Marshall's friendly contract (in its final year) with Jalen Rose's salary cap albatross (two more years, $32 million). But the Raptors' asking price has been too high, and the team might have to resign itself to dealing Marshall without Rose if it wants to get younger.
4. Theo Ratliff, C, Blazers. The team gave out nearly $170 million in extensions last summer to Darius Miles, Zach Randolph and Ratliff, and it would like to rescind each deal. But the Blazers can't trade Randolph, the alleged cornerstone of the franchise, and Miles has proved beyond a doubt that he's an untouchable head case. That leaves Ratliff (as well as guard Derek Anderson) as the Blazers' best trade bait. The surprising play of Joel Przybilla makes Ratliff expendable.
5. Gary Payton, PG, Celtics. Sacramento? San Antonio? The Lakers? Seattle? Payton has been a good citizen in Boston but wants to go back to a contender on the West Coast. The Celtics will help him if they can find the right deal.
