Isiah to L.A. a possibility

BY FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

DENVER - Isiah Thomas could emerge as a long-shot candidate to replace Rudy Tomjanovich as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Thomas, the Knicks president, has maintained for months that he will coach again one day and that he has no intentions of coaching the Knicks. Assuming Kobe Bryant has a say in who his next coach will be, the idea of Thomas landing in Hollywood is not far-fetched.

Thomas met with Bryant last summer when the All-Star was a free agent and Bryant is said to think highly of Thomas, who coached the Indiana Pacers for three seasons. And even though Magic Johnson has only a minor role in the Lakers front office, his strong relationship with Thomas could also play a factor. In recent weeks, Thomas has admitted that rebuilding the Knicks and winning in New York is a greater challenge than he anticipated. The Knicks won 39games last season and qualified for the playoffs before being swept by the Nets.

After finishing the worst month in franchise history (2-13), the Knicks are not expected to reach the playoffs this year. And with his team over the salary cap and its future suspect at best, Thomas may feel the time is right to get out.

Thomas, who is on a scouting trip in Europe, was unavailable for comment yesterday. Phil Jackson, Larry Brown and Pat Riley are all considered candidates for the position as well.

This would make me overwhelmingly happy - only problem being, is there anyone decent out there to replace him? I don't exactly know how to eye GM talent. But if we could get someone in here who isn't a jerk (see: Chaney, Wilkens, his assistant, Anderson) and who actually does have some sort of plan (although I suppose more athletic was a plan) that would be amazing.

This isn't gonna happen though, one of those BS articles that will get everyone excited for a little.

Yeah, uh, why the hell would Phil Jackson be a candidate for the position of Lakers coach?

Isola trying to sell more papers

Yeah that's what I get out of it.

Isiah has unfinnished business......I think he will let this ride out untill he can get something after next season.

Thing is if you are thinking get under the cap while stocking up picks and youth....then the bomb as to drop now......

Trade Marbs? and Craw? and KT?

I think more than anything KT has to be sent out of town. He has to be the first to go.....The Knicks lost a shyte load of games.....Sweetney needs to be the starter and move KT on to someone who needs him before KT gets hurt.....because a hurt KT is a useless KT cuz his contract would be untradable.....as long as KT is producing he is worth the money.

Houston, San Antonio and Miami would be good teams to send him. Maybe even Dallas.

Isiah has a contract, but I don't know how fast he can wiggle out of it.

If he goes to coach the lakers, he would be the scum of the earth.

Its a concept article at best.

I warmed up to Isiah cuz his old timey values and demands that players respect the fans, and what a privelige they have.

I was wary that his hiring was a starphuch by Dolan to generate interest. I really hope Isiah proves to be the man of substance!

The Lakers would have to compensate the Knicks with players, picks, and/or cash.

HE may have a loop hole that allows him to leave to coach only. I don't know. George Karl has always had a loophole that he can leave to coach Carolina with no penalty. it happens.

I doubt Isiah has such a loop.

I think Isiah will put in his 3 years here and evaluate after that. I also think Dolan gives him 3 years before he starts to question his moves

utter & complete conjecture by Isola...he quotes no one in this article as saying Isiah has ever expressed interest in leaving here to go to the Lakers.

Knicks president issues statement to quell Lakers speculation

Feb 02, 2005

NEW YORK (AP) _ Isiah Thomas took himself out of the running for the Los Angeles Lakers' coaching job, issuing a statement Wednesday saying he was committed to remaining in his current position as president of the New York Knicks.

The Lakers' job opened up when Rudy Tomjanovich resigned, citing health issues, and Thomas' name was floated as a possible candidate to be the eventual successor.

Thomas has maintained he would like to return to coaching some day, although he has ruled out being both coach and president of the Knicks.

New York has lost 14 of its last 16 games to drop from first to fourth place in the Atlantic Division. Thomas made a coaching change a week and a half ago, replacing Lenny Wilkens with Herb Williams.

"All my focus is going into rebuilding this franchise, and any innuendo that I would leave my position because of the difficult stretch the team is currently going through is incorrect," said Thomas, who is on a scouting trip in Europe.

"I have a duty to the organization, to our ownership and to our fans to find ways, both short and long term, to return the Knickerbockers to a championship caliber team, and I am steadfast in that commitment.
