Brown: I'm staying
Says he wouldn't take Knicks job
Speaking to columnist Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press yesterday, Brown insisted that the Pistons will be his last coaching job and he has no interest in taking over the Knicks next season.
"Even if they offer me the job at the end of this season, I am not going to go coach the Knicks," Brown told Albom.
The coach also blasted a New York Post reporter, whose story last week raised speculation that Brown may try to break his contract with the Pistons to take over the Knicks. The story quoted Brown as saying the Knicks were his "dream job."
"I told the guy I'm gonna coach in Detroit and this is gonna be my last coaching job," Brown said. "My statement to him was I'm not coaching anywhere else, this is my last coaching job. My goal is to finish here and hang with my family."
Those quotes were not included in the Post story.
The Pistons' front office and many of the team's players reportedly were livid when they learned of Brown talking about the Knicks' job.
"I told him what I'm telling you," Brown continued. "Did I say it was my dream job, yes, I told him it once was. But they passed me over twice. I grew up in New York. I talked to the guy about that. I talked to him about Red Holzman."
The free-falling Knicks fired Lenny Wilkens on Jan. 21 and replaced him with interim coach Herb Williams. Since then, Brown's name has surfaced, along with Phil Jackson's, as possible successors.
The Knicks have lost 12 of their last 14 games and are in danger of not making the playoffs.
Brown, 64, still has 3-1/2 years left on his $25 million contract to coach in Detroit. His Pistons, coming off an NBA title, have struggled much of the season, but they crushed the Knicks, 91-61, in Auburn Hills on Saturday. They held the Knicks to their second-lowest point total in team history since the advent of the shot clock.
But when Brown refused to meet the New York media before or after the game, he only raised speculation about his coaching future.
