Skita out of patience riding bench, decides to renew request for a trade
By Chris Tomasson, Rocky Mountain News January 19, 2005
SEATTLE - Denver Nuggets forward Nikoloz Tskitishvili asked to be traded during the preseason. Through the urging of general manager Kiki Vandeweghe, he backed off on his request and decided to see how the season unfolded.
Tskitishvili is tired of being patient. On Tuesday, he reiterated his desire to be dealt by the Feb. 24 deadline.
Advertisement "That's what I wish for," Tskitishvili said before the Nuggets faced Seattle at Key Arena. "I want to go to a team where I can play and they also say they're going to use me next year."
Tskitishvili has barely played this season, entering Tuesday having appeared in only 16 games while averaging 1.7 points. He was optimistic about getting a lengthy stint Monday night at Golden State, but that didn't happen.
The Nuggets were without three post players, leaving Kenyon Martin and Tskitishvili as the only two left. But Tskitishvili still played only 10 minutes, going scoreless.
"I was expecting more playing time," Tskitishvili said. "I guess I made some mistakes and coach doesn't like mistakes."
Nuggets interim coach Michael Cooper had thought about starting Tskitishvili with his one available big-man spot, but he went with Rodney White. With the Nuggets desperately needing victories, he said he couldn't afford to play Tskitishvili more.
"You have to be productive on the floor," Cooper said. "We don't have the luxury to have people out there who are not being productive."
Since being selected with the No. 5 pick in the 2002 draft, Tskitishvili has had production problems. He got some long looks as a rookie but has barely played the past two seasons as the Nuggets have become competitive.
"Whatever team is going to give me a chance and use me next year, I would want to go there," said Tskitishvili, who will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.
Vandeweghe declined comment.
NUGGETS INTEREST ALLEN: Early in the season, Seattle shooting guard Ray Allen expressed an interest in Denver for when he becomes a free agent after the season. But that was before the SuperSonics got off to a great start.
Seattle entered Tuesday with the NBA's third-best record. But that hasn't changed Allen's thought process.
"Yeah," said Allen, when asked if he's interested in the Nuggets, who figure to look hard for a shooting guard next summer. "I still haven't signed a contract . . . I've followed the Denver situation pretty closely, with them being in our division. A couple of times I catch them on TV. And, yeah, (a shooting guard is) what they need."
The SuperSonics are trying to negotiate an extension for Allen, making the maximum of $14.6 million this season. But the sides are far apart.
The Nuggets could have about $7 million of cap room next summer. However, they likely could get Allen only in a sign-and-trade.
