As a Suns fan I get to see Hunter alot. The Suns plan on signing JJ...Giving amare the max and resigning hunter. JJ and Amare are almost a givin. Nash isnt making max money. So phoenix only has 1 max player. They had 3 last year. Anywaays getting back to Hunter.
I look at Hunter as coming along with the ride. He is servicable and is semi productive I guess. The guy has hands made out of stone, and hes kind of stupid with a very low bball IQ. He is a decent shot blocker and does bring alittle energy, but Thomas would be crazy to give the guy the MLE if thats what you guys would be willing to pay for him than you can have him. I just look at him as a product of the system.

This is OK. Hey.. Nazr is the same kind of player for us. The difference is Hunter is tougher and more defense oriented. He's also a legit shot blocker and he's 23. To me Nazr and Hunter are almost identical. Hunter is bigger and more athletic and has a bigger impact on defense. He will be cheaper than Nazr and is 4 years younger. What this does is allow you to use Nazr's good production and expiring contract for an otherwise unattainable player in a sign and trade, ESPECIALLY a center. If you could put Dalembert and Hunter at center all of the sudden Sweetney looks a lot better at PF. Sweetney gives you the back to the basket scoring you need, and have 2 shot blocking 7 footers at center playing next to him.
The other guy I'm looking at w/ the MLE is Swift, but obviously he's a 4. He's a great fit with Crawford/Marbury/Ariza and a nasty shot blocker himself. Isiah will have a lot of decisions to make. He's probably got guys on his radar we have no idea about.
Thanks for the post... I enjoy reading this stuff
Pho has major decisions to make.. you figure in two years your looking at Amare (max) Marion ($12mm) Nash $10mm Richardson $7mm JJ - $7mm???
Your talking close to $50mm to retain that core of players. I dont buy it.. someone's going to go. My guess is they try to move Marion this offseason for an expiring contract and VERY high pick. Heck, if the Knicks had a top 4 pick I could see us moving that + TT for Marion.

oh man would i love Shawn Marion but if i'm phoenix I do NOT move this guy. i think he's gold and very underrated. he's a case where everyone makes a big deal out of what he's not (an outside shooter) and takes for granted what he is (EVERYthing else).

Oh I don't like Shawn Marion. Guys must be very wary of players who play out west. Their run and gun still and lack of defense masks many of their flaws. Ariza is our shawn Marion and a whole hel of a lot cheaper too. I would hate to have to watch the ugliest form in the NBA for 82 games.
How long before someone says, but wait he is top five in rebounds this year?
It is an incidental statistic. He is not a beast on the boards and if anyone has watched Phoenix play you can see it. Yes he gets the rebounds, they play run and gun the ball flies all over the court.
On another note, in respnse to the Steven Hunter post, I feel obligated as a knicks fan on this board to be the first to say: but with Aguire and the rest of our staff working with him, he'll be the next David Robinson. Give the full MLE, we'll make him worth it!!!! After aguire is done with him, his signing will look like a steal!!!

all i hope to see next season is a couple of young guys, 6'10 +, long and athletic filling the lanes when marbury and crawford on the fast break. i'm sick and tired of seeing kurt raise his hand asking for the ball on the break, only to get it, take two HUGE steps and try to finger roll it 2" off the ground. if hunter is one of those guys, awesome, bring him aboard.
as for killa4luv post - marion is awesome. there's no way around it. i don't care where or how he gets these rebounds, my man plays defense, runs all over the place, and plays way way way above the rim. i could give a rat's ass about his form as long as the ball goes in the basket and we cause havoc. imagine him AND ariza on the court together. i think pretty much anybody is available for him except marbury and crawford.

yeah marion playing PF, getting double digit rebounding at 6'7'' - this guy is special, he plays hard, is an elite defender, can manage to make jumpshots, and is a great teammate. He's worth the money although no one will ever recognize that.

I'm not convinced it would go that way. Marion is not a franchise player, what a team with a high draft pick really needs. My guess is that they will be hppy to find a taker, like in the marbury trade, with a nice package of picks and expiring contracts.
We certainly could be a player for marion.
Should we ?

we definitely do not need an undersized PF. I really don't see his game giving us what we need as for as low post production. If we just become a running team, we could probably run cats out the gym with him in our lineup next to craw & Ariza/JYD. However, I don't think it is the piece we need to be contenders. He is a good player though no question, but definitely not my pick. I'd rather go after someone like Troy Murphy or Tyson Chandler or Kwame for our 4. I'd prefer for us to be athletic and oversized. But who knows, Marion with Sweets coming off of the bench coul be a very lethal 1-2 punch using totally different as[pects of the game.

Raven Im mostly going by what I see in the league and what value guys have. When you see what Wash traded to get Jamison, and then how much its helped them I think thats where the bar will be set for Marion. He's too good to go in a cash deal. He's a 20/10 player at SF with superior athleticism and defense. A deal to get him would be costly but perhaps not impossible.
Say TT, Sweetney, rights to our #1 and cash for Marion. IF we could then sign Stro Swift for the MLE you have one of the most athletic and explosive teams in the East Marbury Crawford Marion Swift Nazr with KT/Ariza/JYD/Houston/Baker rounding out the bench. We still need a backup PG but I would do that deal if I cold get some kind of commitment from Swift.
A deal to get him would be costly but perhaps not impossible.
100% agree on that. What i meant is that a rebuilding team will no bet on him.
look, he may be too good to end in a cash deal (but when you think about marbury...), yet the situation for the suns is the following :
- it will be hard to get equal "on court" value for marion, cause he has a big nice contract that only true superstars should command. What kind of player will they get that they need with him ? think about it, they're set at many positions, from 1 to 4, and marion wont bring them a center, cause there is none on the block.
- other teams know what their situation look like. marion is still owned roughly 60m$ after this season. Next year, they'll have to take care of amare, he'll command the max of the max. Nex to him is JJ. So, they'll have to make some room. Takers for a 60m$ contract are not that many, unless you're trading $ for $, which they won't want.
So, with expiring contract and a pick, we should be able to grab him.
Giving sweet + taking the $$$ and loosing the pick would be too much imo. We've already paid a hefty price for marbury, but we needed to "start" the engine. We can't do that 2 times in a row.
