Hardaway wants trade,
but costs pretty Penny

BY FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

MIAMI - With Garden boss James Dolan standing at his side late Tuesday, Isiah Thomas stood inside the Knicks locker room and implored his players to stick together and not allow personal agendas to undermine the team.
Thomas' message came moments after the Knicks lost to Sacramento and not long after Penny Hardaway informed the Knicks president that he was unhappy over his limited role and that he would welcome a trade.

According to a team source, Hardaway's agent, Kevin Poston, contacted Thomas after the game and the two got into a heated exchange. Neither Thomas nor Poston was available for comment yesterday. Hardaway, who is earning $14.6 million this season and $15.7 million next year, could not be reached for comment.

The Knicks have tried to trade Hardaway several times, including offering him to Toronto along with Tim Thomas for Vince Carter. They have several options: try to trade him, which is no easy task; release him and eat nearly $30 million in salary, which wouldn't go over well with Dolan; or give Hardaway time to cool off and hope that he comes to his senses.

The Knicks apparently are banking on the latter. Yesterday, they placed Hardaway on the injured list because of a sore right hamstring. The club announced that Hardaway, who did not accompany the team to Miami, returned home to Memphis, where he will conduct his rehabilitation on his own.

One ominous sign, however, is that the Knicks did not set aside a locker for Hardaway last night. Teams often give an injured player a locker even when he's not with the club as a sign of respect. Not this time.

Hardaway's absence left the Knicks with 10 available bodies for last night's game against Miami. The Knicks could not even activate Jamison Brewer because Brewer went on the injured list on Saturday to create a roster spot for Hardaway and must sit out a minimum of five games.

On Saturday, Hardaway was upset after playing only 13minutes against New Jersey. He then played only seven minutes against the Kings. On several occasions, Hardaway has hinted that he would like a bigger role and that the Knicks are not maximizing his talents.

Thomas probably knew that issues over playing time would surface the moment he signed Jamal Crawford last summer. When healthy, Crawford, Stephon Marbury and Allan Houston are going to play most of the minutes at guard. Rookie Trevor Ariza has also worked his way into the rotation. The Knicks would like to use Hardaway as a backup point guard but Hardaway knows that with Marbury playing 40minutes a night he wouldn't see much time.

I would have no problem with this, but Penny's been bad, plain and simple. In his couple games back he was awfull. What else can you say? He's not the defender Trevor is, he's not the shooter Houston is and he doesnt have Crawford's explosion. Who should lose minutes for Penny?

He can have his trade next year... in the meantime you go get that hammy strong there lil penny

$29 million isn't enought for him? There is a reason he isn't playing- he's been hurt and when healthy, a mediocre performer.

When he gets his shooting % over .400, he can talk.

If he wants minutes, he should be working on shooting the ball, not his mouth.

Mistake, he's got around 30m.

That's 30 millions reason for shutting the f... up.

But who are those guys ? I mean, he's absolutly-completly washed, cant shoot-cant-run-cant-jump-cant-defend... and he's asking for a trade ?

at that rate, eisley will soon ask to participate in the slam dunk contest. This is getting ridiculous.

Put him in a box and release him next year at the trading deadline.

these dudes are truly out of the realm. it just doesnt make sense for an employee who makes immense amounts of $$$$ to do anything but give 100% and follow orders, even if he/she may not like it. He has the option to quit, but I think he makes to much money to complain about anything. Penny's best days are WAY WAY WAY behind him.

You really cannot buyout players. Other guys see this as a way out. Btch and complain until you force a hand--like zo and VC did. What an owner should do is stop paying the player. Zo cant take 5mm less even though the guy has 150 mm in career earnings? Why should a team pay you so much money when you are not willing to even represent the team in a beneficial matter of any kind?

Is Penny not done, and this has been a smoke cover for stuff we havent heard of?

... fortunately, Isiah will let Penny's request go in one ear and out the other. From the standpoint of his contract coming due, he's a very valuable commodity... and at the right time, Zeke will package him to a team looking to clear cap room.

Zeke will do what's best for the Knicks... until then, Penny can work to get healthy, start to make good decisions like veteran players should, try to help the team (if he can, which is doubtful)and most importantly(like many have suggested) shut the f**k up.

Penny has been a dick where ever he goes. I called him a good soldier this year because he seemed to be helping out and taking a back seat knowing he is getting paid a gazillion dollars and has no game left.

It is really sad what he is doing. He has no trade value this season, and next, who knows. Why would anyone want a dick on the team. I am really sorry he is reverting back to some kind of Biatch Diva when he has no game! All that preseason bullcrap was just lipservice!

He was cap fodder! Nothing more! Just take the dam money and be quiet Penny! Your doll was twice the man you were! Imagine having to build an advertising campaign around a guy so stupid, so boring and void of any character you need to create a doll and have Chris Rock do the voice over! We should rid ourselves of Penny and just have little penny on the bench.

I wish someone could do a Spoof where little penny goes off on big penny on what a pathetic player/teamate he has become and he just sticking for the money but his pride too hurt to be quiet!

Oh wow, skipped right over this.
I'm just hoping we hold onto him for a little while, as his contract is constantly gaining value. Don't pull the trigger too fast Zeke.

He's not gonna get traded for value unless a team is trying to cut salary, or just trying to consolidate.

Whatever.....

Baker is a vet he needs to just calm down and play his game. Penny knows Houston and Craw are here......JYD and Ariza have to play because of their energy.

Everyone wants to play but you have to produce......not hard to figure out.

Penny will definately get his trade soon. He doesn't have to get his agent to leak it to the media. The writting is on the wall already.

the knicks would trade penny if they could, but who wants a shot back up who makes 15mm per? this is why the nba needs a hard cap and lower years for guaranteed money. year 5 should be earned and years 6-7 should be eliminated.

Penny should play back up 1 and STFU. we could use him as a back up 1--in fact we should demand it and if he doesnt wnat to do it, stop the checks.

one last thing, this shows the flaws in taking on extra $$$$ in trades. you CANNOt make it as a business model, it hasnt worked. we have a 2* $$$$ advantage over 90% of the NBA and we are as mediocre as ever.

It's not the kiss of death to be over the cap. This is a misperception.

It is the kiss of death (as we were under Layden) to be well over the cap with suckee, unmarketable players. The difference is Isiah does have players that can be moved. In addition to which, as you know, we are now in the NBA era of lopsided trades from the standpoint of talent. In other words, a team well over the cap can attract very good players via the trade market by having guys (like Penny) who are making ungodly sums of money (15M or so) and an expiring contract. It's called dealings between the under the cap hopefuls looking to attract big name fre agents vs. teams like the Knikcs who probaly won't be under the cap in our lifetime.

With Layden, we were in the abyss, well over the cap and totally talentless players under long term contracts that nobody wanted.

That's the difference, the bigger picture. See my point, Briggs?
