December 20, 2004 -- TORONTO — Alonzo Mourning, who sought a $14 million buyout from the Nets on the $17.7 mil he's owed for the final three years of his contract, is close to an agreement with the Raptors, several sources maintained.

Mourning, traded to Toronto as part of the Vince Carter blockbuster, could get $9-$10 million, one source said.

He shouldn't be allowed to game the system by going to the team he has wanted go to all along. The NBA needs a rule to prevent this in the future.

comon, the nets betrayed him when they shredded their team. they promised to build a championship contender, and then trade away kittles, martin and co for draft picks.

he should have the right to lead one last fight for a ring, this guy deserves it.

we're not talking about macgrady here.

Can't disagree with you more, Raven. Guy should be allowed to play where he wants if he's willing to sacrifice to do it (e.g., Karl Malone last year). Shouldn't be allowed to hold up a team demanding a buyout with the threat of refusing to play ... and then get the buyout and go play somewhere else.

As for Mourning and the Nets ... they paid him throughout his medical problems. Doesn't he owe them something more than griping about management? If he'd been healthy last year, they may have won the championship.

If as a player you want to a guarantee that your team will have a realistic shot at a championship every year, sign one year contracts with good teams and give up $/security to do so. Otherwise, you get the same deal every other player does. You do your best and hope your team stays healthy and doesn't make stupid management moves, but you know that only about 25% of the guys in the league play for teams with a realistic shot at a ring, so if you're one of them, you're lucky.

If The nets could not provide the support, Zo could have just walked away and asked for his release to go to another team and play where he wants. He wanted the money!

Nets did not think K-mart was worth max money. Kittles has a huge ending deal. Mourning over the summer was not coming back.

Zo is wrong here for his complaints and wanting the money at the same time.

The nets showed they were sincere by signing him with no insurance and took a huge financial risk to bring him. Teams get sold, life happens. If he wanted to play elsewhere, he could have asked for a waiver at any time.

Toronto gets no cap relief from that trade... only draft picks.

Miami HOWEVER GET THE NBA CHAMPIONSHIP

-Mourning resigns with the HEAT (he is a scumbag for complaining when he has been given every perk and advantage)
-Malone decideds wait the west has the MAVS, KINGS, WOLVES, SUNS, to go through and signs with the heat...
-Jalen Rose is moved for Eddie Jones

Wade/Dooling
Damon Jones
Jalen Rose
Halsem/Malone
Shaq Mourning

I wonder if Isiah will offer him the remaining $1.4 mil of the MLE. If Zo's healthy enough to get 3 blocks a game like he was early in the year, I think this Knicks team can compete with anyone. I like a lineup very much of

Marbury
Crawford
Houston
Nazy
Alonzo

You might not use that lineup to start games, but I'd like to close out games with that lineup (or with Kurt or Sweetney in the game if they're playing well).

I'd like to bring in Zo, but it is a VERY slim chance he would sign here. Isiah would really need to sweet talk him.
