I agree with what the writer said. It's not surprising that Giambi used steriods; it wouldn't surprise me if most power-hitters did; and until baseball tries to fix this problem, we can't be shocked that players are doing this.

... wonder if Yanks will attempt to void his contract as a result of his admission?

I heard they were trying to, but there's a slim chance that they can.

oh I agree with that part. The part I don't care for is his decision to deal with it so blithely and disingenuously. To wit:

"And don’t get sanctimonious about Giambi lying to the public while telling the truth to a grand jury. The rules of the game are that he is supposed to lie until caught red-handed. Giambi saying he never took steroids is like President Clinton saying he never had sex with that woman. It’s what he’s supposed to say."

"We don’t just expect people to lie, we want them to lie. We love lies of all types, starting with the greatest lie of all, told by nearly every man to the question asked him by a woman he loves: 'Does this outfit make me look fat?'"

"But the reality is that we don’t want the truth. As the line in the movie goes, we can’t handle the truth. When we’re shopping for a home, we want the salesperson to convince us that if King Arthur had known about this bungalow, he’d have abandoned Camelot. If we admire an athlete who’s suspected of using drugs, we want that person to tell us he or she is as pure as the driven snow."

Then he goes on to reveal, IMO, the source of his attitude - he didn't get the reaction he originally wanted when he reported on suspected drug abuse by athletes, so he became cynical and spiteful as a result:

"Many of us have been saying for years that these drugs are out there and they are used by the top athletes. The rumors around Giambi predate all the BALCO investigations. The rumors around Bonds and Sammy Sosa go back as far.

But if we suggest a great athlete is taking something, we, the messengers are blamed. Florence Griffith-Joyner set track records in 1988 that still haven’t been broken. When she set them, I and others repeated what we heard — that she wasn’t clean. And we were vilified for saying it, just as some of us were beaten up for years for saying that Pete Rose wasn’t an upstanding human being who never bet on baseball. "

Maybe Giambi learned something from Chris Webber's case. CWEB could have been heading to jail if not for the death of Ed Martin. There are some things you just cannot do... lying to a grand jury is one of them.

Now ESPN is saying the SF Chronicle reports Bonds testifies to using steroids. Just a big ol' week for the MLB.

The most astounding number to come out of the Barry Bonds steroid controversy is not that 93 percent of the 40,000-plus voters on a SI.com poll don't believe Bonds' claim that he was unaware he took steroids. The more intriguing number comes from Stats Inc., which reports that Bonds had never hit a home run longer than 450 feet before the 2000 season, when he turned 36. Since then, he's hit at least 21 homers of 450 feet or farther.

This is starting to get ridiculous...anyone here about the government stepping in about steroids?
There's guys in the major leagues doing pot, cocaine, but steroids is what we need to crack down on.

What's astounding to me is that 7% of the voters believe him or at least aren't sure that he's lying.

Are you serious? Pot and cocaine don't give players a competitive advantage, steroids do. That is why they are called "performance enhancing." Consequently, the integrity of the game is impacted.

It's hard to understand why you can't see that.

Yes, I see that, but I also see that there are so many other things the government should be focusing on before this issue, but I will leave the politics out of this thread.

So isn't it obvious from the hearsay that Bonds lied to the grand jury?
