There's a lot of good stuff in the game thread about how refreshing it was to see Shamet and Wright give some quality minutes.
Thought this topic was important enough to have a discussion about it here.
If you look at JB's last 5 games back to Game 5 in Boston, he has had 2 games of those 5 with 5 fouls and one game he fouled out.
This is another reason its really critical to have another steady point guard soak up some minutes early in the game to preserve him for the end of game.
This is not only about the fear of him fouling out in and of itself, but also to prevent him from having to try to be *too careful* on Defense making him even WORSE of a defender as a result of that fear of fouling out. Thibs needs to manage his minutes early to keep him in his best position to succeed in crunch time.
The second point is that Cam has not been earning his minutes. On defense, he's been terrible. On offense, he's had maybe 1 good game. Not enough to keep him on the floor. Too erratic, and his wild shooting is disrupting the offense.
Delon is steady. Plays good D, and we need him giving some resistance to the Pacers high octane offense, giving their guards a little resistance. And he's 6'5" so not giving up anything to Hali. He has my solid vote for second guard off the bench after Deuce.

There should be less preconceived notions about playing anyone an alottment of minutes and more just “letting the game tell you what to do” as Thibs loves to say. Have your foundational rotation of course but just go with what’s needed. We might need Brunson for 40 mins next game. But if other guys are cooking let them keep cooking.

We probably can't play KAT and Brunson together too much on defense. So whoever is hot will get mins and the other guy may get his cut a bit

I think the issue really is if JB gets two fouls, then you have to pull him. He is not a good enough defensive player to competently defend while worried about not picking up another foul. Thibbs plays him and KAT too much after foul trouble. Moreover, we need JA well rested with at least two fouls available for the final 5 minutes of the game. Lastly, our offense becomes too predictable with JB at times. Mixing it up more and giving KAT more time as the primary option will put more pressure on Indiana.

Tonight's game is another must-win.

Trust the Process

Thibs was forced to adopt and his bench executed with excellence.
Indy will counter. Perhaps they try to run knicks off the court again and build a lead insurmountable.
Or knicks run them off the court and they do what happend in Game one.
They are getting JB in foul trouble and its working. But Sunday night knicks figured some **** out.
Mconnell was not a factor in the second half.

In the end Captain Clutch got it done. when your down in a series every game is a must win. Need room for errors.

I see the bold both ways. I agree with you. Towns and JB are already terrible on defense with no fouls. With two fouls they will play that “oolay” defense and just escort players to the rim, trying not to foul.

At the same time, those two are the top scorers on the team and needs to be on the floor for offensive reasons.

The good news is, deuce and shamett can score. Wright can play defense. So Thibs should now have the confidence to sit JB. Same with towns. Forces Thibs to play a traditional center lineup with hart back in the game and Mitch at center instead of towns.

Thibs is the key. JB and Towns will not play defense with 2 fouls and Thibs will have to manage the rotation like he did in game 3. Will be interesting to see how game 4 plays out.

Well I guess game 4 wasn’t interesting. Thibs started Mitch but reverted back to old rotation habits. Regardless is the original 5 started, Thibs continued to play that same 5 and you can see there are chemistry and defensive issues with his favorite 5. He can get out of his own way. No wright and no Mitch in the 4th.

Now what does Thibs do, when facing elimination?

Start Delon - put him on Hali (full court)

Bring Mitch/Josh/Deuce/Shamet off bench and squeeze whatever minutes you can get out of them - if they are going good leave them the F out there.

First bonehead turnover or foul Josh commits throw him in the trunk and throw the keys in the woods

Reduce mins for JB, and a vote for Delon
