At least we are shooting a high percentage, and our offensive is efficient, if slow. It’s the defense that needs help.

I think it would fix things a lot, obviously getting Robinson back into the line up, but also starting Deuce instead of Hart.

What sticks out to me are the Bulls.
Second most threes and they still suck.
Believe it’s simple, taking wide open threes is better than contested two’s.
Boston has a fluid offense that drives, swings and kicks to open players.
Boston is also third in defense.

Point was, it’s more than how many threes a team takes.
Believe Cavs are up there in shooting percentage. Reason why they are doing well.
Wolves are up there and still struggling.
Nets and Jazz are up there in attempts as well with not much to show for it .

Do think the Knicks can improve in kick outs though. Both JB and KAT draw a lot of attention when driving go the hoop. Problem is they rarely kick it out. Have seen teams like Miami and Boston have an obvious goal to drive, kick and swing for years. Often several attempts in one possession. We have had too much spread 5 with JB and KAT doing their thing. IMHO

The Knicks are awesome at 2s and have 2 of the best bucket getters in basketball, hut when Boston takes 20 more 3's than us, the math stops working. When they sre hitting at 50 pct its next to impossible.

Exactly. So far , Thibs approach has been: we are only running plays to get into the paint and any 3 attempted are accidental. So, shoot a high percentage ( higher than Boston) but almost never shoot it from there.

And also we are not going to defend the 3. Just leave guys open from 3 and hope they miss.

True. And can’t complain about KAT specifically, when going strong to basket.

My hope for OG is that he adds the pump fake and drive to his game.
Feel he is so athletic and can easily collapse the defense and kick it out to open shooter.
Same for Mikal. But he prefers getting to that 10 foot mark and shooting a jumper.

Ok. So I checked my numbers and something interesting happened. I am using this data.

I suggest clicking all three links in order. Then use back and forward to compare stats by teams across seasons.

We have increased 2s and decreased 3s over time. Cleveland and Boston have progressively increased both their 3PA and their 3P% over time.

Do this for each(2P% * 2Pt Attempts * 2) + (3pt% * 3pA * 3). You get a scoring based on attempts. All teams are hovering around 90 attempts. This ignores FT attempts, but all I am trying to do is adjust for 2 vs 3 shot selection. Notably, Boston is getting just as many FT attempts on much fewer 2pt attempts.

Cleveland is king at 106 pts
OKC is next at 102 pts
Bos is 3rd at 101 pts
NYK are last at 100 pts.

But this isn't an attempt for gloom and doom. But when I argue in other threads that we are not living up to our potential, it is this. There is a big twist here though. If I just allocate 13 2pt attempts to 3pt attempts, our score does not change. Why?

Because both our 2pt PPP and 3pt PPP are actually very good. Better than BOS and OKC. CLE is king. Every team's 2pt PPP is better than their 3pt PPP. So, why are we getting blown out? We do worse against THESE teams. We are giving up size and defense to each of them. We have worse turnovers.

I think the answer is that we are right there. We lack the bench depth of these teams. We are fading as the season rolls on. A little more depth on the bench. A little more faith from our players. A little more ball movement and we are right there with the top teams in the league. We clearly whomp on the other teams.

I still see upside in this team. I think we need a bench and to understand why our 3pt% is plummeting as the season progresses. Tired legs is my guess.

Good stuff. Its really awful what's happening when we compare to OKC, Clev, and Boston. Then look down in the standings and how we fair agaist the other teams and its a reminder of why this season has been mostly fun.
What will it take to over come those teams? Good questions. Is the bench getting better? Sort of. Its work in progress. Slow.
Most pundits never had us winning a chip. We fail when we play the real contenders. When you have the 5th best record how do you fire the coach? If you have a core together 3 years and can't move ahead and its because they need a fresh voice/schematic, then perhaps.
We chant "MVP" when its all good but all the while we understood KAT and Brunson are liablities. On paper we hope our Trio of "Wingstops" could over compensate.

Logical that we don't go past two rounds if we face either Clev. or Bos there. If we do, then the glory will be fun to behold. If not, im sure the finest baskeball savants will be all over here to boast "told you so". Not really, cuz it was not expected this year. The key was getting the foundational pieces in place. But the rest takes time.

We could use a reserve wing who can let it fly. We can use more pull up 3's. To be honest I thought we'd use McBride as a gunner more and we haven't. Did you notice that when he started the game vs. Chicago we put up almost 40 3s?

TJ is taking 7 3's a game in Westchester. Green light buddy!

But yes I wanna see KAT and Brunson take more 3s. They are 40% shooters - we can use more. I think OG and Mikal, because they have been so streaky, go for long periods where they pass them up. We know Josh's confidence definitely slips a lot and he is constantly passing them up.

Boston rarely passes em up when they have space.

Yeah, I think TJ will be added to the main club soon, for that reason. We definitely need more gun slingers. Since we can't guard them, we gotta shoot them.

The worst thing we can do is not guard the 3 and not shoot the 3. The hardest thing to fix right away is guarding 3's. The easiest to fix, is finding 3pt shooters like TJ.
