Zach might be my favorite analyst. I hope he relocates fast.

I wonder if he’ll still have a podcast. One of the best, IMO.

ESPN just saved a lot of money when Woj retired from journalism, so this makes zero sense to me. They pay Pat McAfee a zillion dollars to run his mouth, and the bean counters try to save a few bucks by laying off quality journalists.

ESPN also had to buy the broadcast rights to one league after another. Doubt they thought of giving their top execs a pay cut. God forbid

Where and when do you guys see Zach lowe on ESPN?
I did the podcast.. I don't watch ESPN really except for specific ball games. Stopped watching sport center and most other shows years ago.
Wojo? Windhorst been mostly coving his stuff.
The scoop thing? Not as important as it used to be.
The market has changed. Remember Bill simmons? They did him a huge favor cutting him loose. The man is wealthy now. He did his own thing and sold it. Still does it too!

You'll find him again. The formats are changing. He is good, but ratings keep falling.
But fret not, new guys come up and takes others place. Perhaps some of the guys here are not the masses but the shows he was on are not ratings monsters.

ESPN is not the public library and to be subsidized by the public taxpayer. Its a FOR PROFIT company whose time has come to either change or be gone. The way people watch tv has changed drastically. Technology of cable bought them to the peak and its that very channel of viewership that is putting them in decline. People used to put ESPN on and did not care what was on. I used to put on sports center every day. Its been years since I have. I don't follow Baseball really anymore. I have lost interest in the NFL for the most part. I don't do fantasy sports nor ever gamble on a game. I have never placed a bet on a singe game. Ever. Im the minority I suppose, but there are many like me. Perhaps the hard core fans buy League passes for Football. I buy for NBA, but don't place bets on the games.

If you love good journalism its time to put your hand in your pocket and pay for it. For years many companies gave it away for free thinking they can sell ad space but that does not always work. NY times has far more digital subscribers now and after a first failed attempt they adapted to the moment and are thriving with a great product.

My goodness, look at the major networks? Not the same. Not even close. Your children don't watch TV the way we did and its all changing big time. Blame corp greed? Do the ESPN execs still get those big salaries? I doubt it. Not like they used to.
Do we think the ESPN viewer values good journalism? You think that drives ratings?

But don't worry, If you like Lowe, or others you can find them. If not, others will take their place who are excelling in other places and competing to get a chance for less money. They too will become big names perhaps and get raises. They too will either leave to get paid more or less.

Zach is the absolute best. They got rid of him because he makes a lot of money but he’s not a personality. Espn needs to pay Stephen A and Pat M more money for their personalities. Can’t look at ESPN anymore for real analysis or content. The Athletic is the place for that. Espn has for a long time had dissolving quality content and their espn+ app is terrible to navigate. If you click on a link it will always bounce back and forth between the app and the actual website. The only reason most people still have it is because it’s lumped in with Hulu and Disney which is the one convenient thing they do. Everything else is strictly for TV entertainment purposes. For as great as Zach is, he doesn’t fit their model.

I dont know if I have aged out or what but I haven't watched ESPN with any regularity for about a decade outside of the clips. I thought they used to have a good balance of both content and personality.

It's all personality and cilckbaits? Is that what makes money these days?

Disney did layoffs this month also. September is the end of the fiscal year. Bob Iger layed off 7,000 employees last year when he came back. 300 more this month. I’ll bet firing Lowe is all about cost cutting. They have a bazillion nba analysts.


Last month, Disney projected an upbeat end to the 20224 fiscal year, which concludes at the end of September: It raised the target for full-year adjusted earnings per share growth to 30%, up from 25% previously. For the June quarter, Disney beat Wall Street expectations on revenue and profit and the company reported its first-ever profitable quarter for the consolidated direct-to-consumer streaming business (which includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+). However, operating profit for Disney's domestic theme parks declined 6% in the period and the company warned that ongoing weak demand could hamper the segment's results for the next few quarters.

The ESPN app is good for it's content, especially the 30 for 30s, but I forget I even have it a lot of the times. I rarely their Insider articles and I get more annoyed more often times than not with the Apps intrusiveness.

I agree with you Martin. The last personality I liked and would tune in to see was Chris Herman. That seems like ages ago.

Really I only know Lowe from the podcast.
Outrage at ESPN is old news. They never had the journalistic relevance. They were the only game in town for a while other than regional.
Nobody misses Berman or the Daily news. Beat writers are a thing of the past. It was nice. Players and writers traveled together. That got lost a long time ago.
Want stories? You have players now doing their own thing. Jalen and Josh for example. JJ reddick did a great job, got Arenas and Jackson blasting off.
