But the mutually beneficial bond he forged over the years with Nike — which paid Ciambrone to handcraft sneakers for several sponsored athletes and hired him to teach a customization workship in 2017 — has soured. In July, the sportswear giant sued Ciambrone and his L.A. company, Surgeon Worldwide, accusing him of counterfeiting, mass customization and trademark infringement. In a statement to The Times, Nike said it “valued our relationship with the Shoe Surgeon” and did not have “any issues” with Ciambrone’s one-off designs using Nike sneakers as a canvas. But it accused the cobbler of taking things too far by scaling up his operations in ways that, according to the lawsuit, “are illegal, deceive consumers and create confusion in the marketplace.” Nike said it tried to work things out for two years with Ciambrone before filing suit to protect the integrity of its brand; it is seeking $60 million. – via Los Angeles Times

JJ Redick on getting Lakers' job: 'I know I deserve this opportunity as well'

JJ Redick on the challenge of the Lakers job and skipping the coaching line: “In regards to skipping the line… I think there’s a little bit of a misconception around the idea of someone deserving something or someone not deserving something. Ultimately, it is an organization’s charge to find a coach that’s the right fit for that team and organization with whatever skill sets they may have. There hasn’t been a moment that I haven’t felt an extreme level of gratitude, and yes, I feel lucky. I feel lucky I got this opportunity, but I know I deserve this opportunity as well. It’s not because I spent seven years as an assistant coach—it’s because I’ve worked my ass off on this craft of basketball for the last 32 years.”

A better response to the question of wether or not Reddick desrves the job would have been for JJ to answer "that remains to be seen".

Larry Bird took the Pacers to the Finals with no coaching experience. But the flip side to that coin is Derek "booty call' Fisher.

And the opposite is also true, Fizdale was brought up in the Riley/Spo school of coaching and fell flat. 8 years as an assistant or something from 2 of the best and that did not help him.

Good point. Although Fizdale had coached a 50 win playoff team in Memphis. In NY he showed that he was mostly about being a celebrity coach.

JVG pointed out at the time that Fizdale should have spent more time working on being the best coach he could be, instead of chasing the cameras.

In Miami he was mostly about kissing up to the "big three", not learning from a future HOF coach in Spoelstra. His time as head coach in NY showed that he was more about style than substance.

50 games over 2 years. He coached a 43 win team in his first year and ran into Spurs and lost in first round. And then won 7 more in 19 games the next season before getting canned.
