If he was a regular UFA that didn’t play here last year, he would be talked about a lot more as a top backup option on the market. He is limited, but was fine all year as a rebounder and weak side shot blocker. He is switchable defensively and gave us some really solid games. I say bring him back to backup Mitch , Sims as third string, and Hukporti on a 2-way as a developmental big. Once we get into the next trade cycle between December and February we can assess where the center position stands and there will be plenty of other options on the market. I’m down for other options like Bitadze, trade for Isaiah jackson etc, but it just seems like Achiuwa is just as good as most of the options out there. Just a thought.

Did we lose the bird rights when we didn't give him a qualifying offer or can we go over the cap to sign him? Or do we need to use the MLE?

We were joking that it was the Precious trade last season with OG out. He was that much of a surprise. The FO might be wanting to wait and see what other teams will offer, before making one of their own. I'd be happy to see him brought back.

We still have his bird rights just like we did OG.

The counter argument to this might be that trading Achiuwa via S&T is the best way to get more money out in the bridges deal to free up being hard capped at the first apron. But there are other ways to get there (Burks S&T or combining Diakite contract with highest level second round exception contract.) we could very well just be fine being hard capped at the first apron if Achiuwa comes back for cheap because there’s an established role here, and if we have a little space leftover to add another vet via minimum.

I think there's a great chance he just doesnt get much attention and we can sign him cheap.

He's actually a really good fit as a small ball center for us

He's our best option on the open market but hopefully Knicks can find a center in the trade market.

If the decision is between Goga and Precious, I'm sticking with Precious.

Might be able to use both, if they can manage the Bridges trade.

Goga has more upside. Ideally we can add Goga at the MLE for 5mm and then Precious resigns for 8-9mm per year. Think he's somewhere below Naji Marshall money in this market.

C Robinson/ Sims
PF Randle/ Dadiet
SF Anunoby/ Hart
SG Bridges/ DiVincenzo
PG Brunson/ McBride/ Kolek (at second round exception)

Those 11 I consider locked and get us to 169M next year. Bitadze or another player at the taxpayer MLE puts it to 174. Another second round exception at 1M (McCullar?) gets it to 175-176M. Obviously not enough leftover for Achiuwa but it’s really close if you’re staying at the first apron. Maybe they just sign Achiuwa, bring in Daniel Theis (CAA client) for the minimum and stick to the first apron. Then come Jan/feb you figure it out from there. Or wait until a team wants Burks, offer that third team a second round pick to lump it into the Bridges deal and add a non-guaranteed second year to the deal (S&T require 2 year deal) and you have second apron room now.

I like Sims more than most people and think he’s ready to take the next step into the rotation but I’d still sign Precious to get all the depth we can get. 82 games is a long regular season and it’s a battle of attrition which is why we lost to a not great pacer team

I don't mind Precious but don't want him as the primary backup, not enough size.

Correct. What we lose in passing, limited playmaking, and reliable 9ft push shots from Hartenstein will be mitigated by having a healthy Randle, who can do all of that much, much better than Hartenstein. That said, we still need another big for banging in the post, post D and grabbing rebounds vs other legit bigs. A reliable jumper from 10ft and non-atrocious hands (unlike Mitch) would be a plus. Mitch will get hurt and Sims hasn't shown himself competitive in high stakes playoff competition, which is what matters for this team right now. I like Precious and hope he returns but he's not a sufficient backup at center.

Knicks are lacking bigs and he played well here.

Definitely want him back.
