Another must is for Brunson to make more of an effort to get them going early on. That will help take some of the pressure off of him defensively.
I think they also might have to bite the bullet and start Brunson of guarding Garland or Mitchell. I appreciate the effort, but Garland is going to torch RJ anyway. But when you have JB guarding a competent wing like Cedi or Caris it brings another scorer into the equation. Those guys aren't world beaters, but they're competent enough to take advantage of a 5 inch height advantage.
Rj guarded Garland game one. DM guarded RJ alot.
What did they adjust and execute that changed game two.
But that's my point. No Okoro means no easy spot to hide JB. We have no choice but to accept that Garland is going score on whoever's guarding him. Doesn't matter if it's RJ, Grimes IQ... We mind as well keep JB on him and, hopefully, scheme to funnel Garland to his least efficient spots on the floor. Can't have JB guarding Caris or Cedi or whoever. They're going to kill him. Another option is to start IQ and move Grimes to the wing. I'm not saying I know the answer, just spitballing. But an adjustment does need to be made.
No need to say you don’t know the answer, because nobody does and we all spitballing. People on this site act like spitballing is a crime. No it’s how fans chat period.
Whoever JB is guarding, they going at him. When he crosses halfcourt, they doubling him. If JB and the coaching staff can’t defeat the cavs plan to take JB out of the game on both ends, we lose this series, forget the game.
Garland understood the rotation of players the Knicks had in game 2 could not guard him. RJ no, hart guards DM, and grimes guards DM. Brunson is cooked food if he guards garland. Garland already said after game 1, we need to hit them first. And see how much the refs will let us get away with. Then he was smart to say, all Brunson does is snap his head back on every contact play to draw fouls.
The game planned to take Brunson out of the game on both ends. We need to do the same with garland. The cavs also plays 3 guards who are agile on defense and all 3 are great scorers. We need to match those 3 with our own.
Brunson
IQ
Grimes
With RJ in that starting unit, the cavs have 2 players they can attack on defense in Brunson and RJ. If you start IQ instead, they only have 1. Its going to be a hard series to win if we don’t figure out how to affectively use RJ. If he’s giving us zero impact on offense, that’s a problem because he’s not impacting on defense eventhough he’s getting starter mins.
