In College in the past you had conf series and some good Thanksgivng games that added to rankings. Something for the fan.
Conf. Titles in college are bragging rights but you also had rivalries and it mattered for NCAA seedings.

March Maddness is fun, but its a tournament and “national champion” is a bit diluted. But there is a lot for the fans and its fun as hell.

Minor league baseball used to so some fun things like first half winner of season played second half winner for there championships.
Teams that started strong were rewarded. The early season games were meaningful and thus the fans had something too.

Maybe NBA can do something to reward teams for early season wins and standings.
First half winner, second half winner and Tournament winner. If a team wins all three maybe a first round bye? Financially compensated of course (to the owner also for games missed).
Maybe give them more money to resign players also so a good team can stick together longer?

Kudos to league with playin as more teams are vying for a spot and keeping interest where was not any.

I agree.

Seems like the NBA has a built in opportunity here to just schedule divisional games at the middle of the season and then have the winner of the divisional tournament get a playoff berth.

Each team could do a 4 game in a row home stretch against it's division, the teams
with the worst record would play a game to get into the final Four. And then the winner would be divisional champ with a playoff berth. Rivalries are mostly about geographic proximity.

I don't follow "football" but my feeling is the various cups involve different sets of teams. Some are European wide, some just for your league, maybe some even cover domestic teams in other leagues. The NBA Playoffs is essentially a second season of a different game with the same rules.

The beauty of the playin is that it opens the door to more franchises potentially winning the championship ("All the Lakers need to do is make the playoffs")

I don't know if there's anyway around that. Look at load management. You have the best coaches and best players essentially saying there's a threshold where injury RISK outweighs the value of a regular season game. Look at the All Star game- who wants to see that?

Players are savvy enough to understand only one way an undrafted 30 year old with career averages of 5 points and 3 rebounds is getting a 25 million contract (last year with a 9 million player option). If Golden State lost in 7 at the buzzer to the Celtics, still no way GP II gets that deal.

The teams are not really playing extra games outside of the 2 teams in the tourney finals. And it looks like the buildup in the tourney is just regular season, division games.

Prior to 2016 divisional winners were guaranteed a top 4 seeding and home court in the first round. I think that was over kill because teams with better records were opening the playoffs on the road. Disbanding the system though has made those divisional games more or less the same as any other except for their frequency.

I think fans still look forward to divisional games. It means more to beat the Celtics than beating the Bucks. I think this would be true for most franchises.

So having a divisional tournament would kind of be like a college conference tournament. You would still be able to tap into some of those fan emotions. Having each team host all of its divisional rivais over 5 days would be a good gimmick for the fans. And guaranteeing the winner a spot in the playoffs wouldn't be too problematic. There would still be 7 potential slots if you include the play-in teams. Most likely some or all of the divisional champs would qualify on their own.

There would be a big advantage to locking up a spot early. Teams could ease up for the rest of the season, so you would guarantee high level of play.

There are a few players who can get high salaries without playoff success but for the majority, the playoffs are where they really can get a big bump. PJ Tucker is a good example. I don't think that will change. So my opinion is for any tournament to succeed, it has to have some tie in to the playoffs.

If not then I could care less about this tournament.
