As a Knick and Hoya fan, I always loved Ewing as a player, but never liked the hire at Georgetown. Ewing was an NBA coach, its a totally different animal on the college level especially when it comes to recruting and coaching young adults. Hopefully, Georgetown has learned from this and the next coach they hire is outside of the Hoya family. Ewing was a disaster (outside of his miraculous run in the Big East tournament several yrs ago), John Thompson III last 2 years were bad and Craig Esherick never moved the needle. They need a coach that can recruit, relate to this new breed of players.

Happy to here that St. Johns has finally gotten over themselves and may be interested in hiring Rick Pitino. When I say finally 'gotten over themselves' for decades, St. Johns refused to even consider coaches like Pitino, Calipari, Bruce Pearl, Kelvin Sampson and any other coach that may be been slapped by the NCAA...Say what you want about Pitino, but he is, IMO, one the top 5 coaches of his era. Hopefully these two programs can turn it around and return to the top of the league.

I agree about the Ewing hire. Thought he didnt do himself favors in turning down the offer to coach the G-league team. Would have given him a chance to work on his craft.

Ewing had a rep for clashing with some of his coaches. Was more of a quiet leader, who let his game do the talking. Frankly I was surprised that Patrick was interested in becoming a coach.

Awesome....wish I had a chance to watch Hoya Paranoia in person! It didn't suprise me that Ewing took the Hoya job because he had been an NBA assistant for so long and had been passed over for many jobs. You are right, he should have taken that G league coaching job for his sake and Georgetown sake. I had zero confidence that he could turn around the Hoyas. They need a coach with college experience and it will help if that coach has ties to High Schools and AAU circuit in the DMV area...

I agree. Part of it for me was how the 93-94 run ended. Pitino left on a good note, we're left wondering what might have been. The way Mark Jackson shocked the league, it sure was fun.

I remember playing against St. John's when they were still called The Redman. They also still played some of their games at their small arena on campus. Story, I went to a bar near their campus, think it was called Gantrys and started speaking to the bartender regarding basketball. He told me that there was a time back in the day when a St Johns great, Chris Mullin, would sit at the seat I was sitting in, (end of the bar) for pretty much all night. Looked up Chris Mullin and read how he was an alcoholic. Thought to myself and no one helped him? He did not come out and admit it until many years later.

Patrick started well. Think like most schools, now its all about recruiting. Know that Georgetown is a tough academic school. Not sure what went on back in the day in terms of going around that but feel its probably hard to find inner city athletes that meet those type of requirements. Know a couple of good HS players that tell me there is also less emphasis on the name of the school players go to and more about the opportunity to get ample playing time. As we have seen, the talent is so close throughout the many schools around the country. Regardless of their names. Hopefully Patrick will get another shot. With the amount of good programs, I am sure he will.

Comes as zero surprise that Patrick flopped as a coach. He does not have the personality for it. Great player, greatest Knick ever but really who thought he was going to be a legit head coach. Jordan never became an nba head coach either because he he simply didn’t have the personality for it

He put in the years as an assistant.
Was his lack of success due to recruitment or on the bench?
Was he not able properly manage a staff? Keep them organized?
Was his staff not able to maintain development? Did they lose players to transfer and if so why?
He was there 6 years. They won the Big east tournament in 2021 and NCAA birth!
He was an assistant in Houstan, Orlando, Wizards (while jordan was in FO), and the Bobcats.
JVG, SVG, Doug Collins, Steve Clifford, and many others who hired him never thought to pass on that perhaps his personality was just not right to keep coaching?

You seem to be the resident expert on Georgetown mens basketball. Other than the dismal record perhaps you can enlighten us to his recruiting prowess, the funding and Alumni pressures he faced, and the demise of the conference and future issues Georgetown faces being a small school without a football program to fund other sports?

Its widely known great players don't make great coaches but ewing stuck it out with being an assistant for years and years.
He was hired by 4 NBA teams. Knicks offered him G-League.
His record was awful in GTown. We all saw it. But you REALLY saw it. Congrats, your awesome!!
