Feels like something is really building with Quickley. Last night was his national breakout party, and in his 3rd year he’s taking a major step forward. His fit with Brunson and Randle has been perfect. He’s a great defensive player and has the size and length now to play the 2 comfortably. He’s become a great spot up shooter (he lacked in this area previously) and has developed a good pull-up once he gets into the lane. Given the defensive ability he seems like more than an elite 6th man. Just seems like a complete player is developing. Knicks still don’t have that traditional top tier superstar, but if Quickley develops into an allstar level player, Knicks can make a ton of noise with 3 star level players and the right supporting cast. You never know what can happen in the playoffs if you’re in the mix each year. Not saying this is a championship team, just saying there’s an avenue to getting there if Quickley develops alongside Brunson and Randle, and the supporting cast fits in their roles. Obviously Hart, Grimes and Robinson do. Barrett we will see. Using picks to acquire guys like Hart is how you get the ideal supporting players. I’m hyped about this group and feel like there’s a real jump that’s being made by Quickley, and alongside Brunson and Randle having the seasons they are, it seems like building around these 3 players is a recipe for sustainable success.

The issue is IQ's best role on this team is as 6th man. This always him to play backup to Brunson and gives him minutes at SG. In both roles, Thibbs is able to get him 30 minutes a game. IQ has long arms but he is only 6'3". Having a bigger player in Grimes or Josh Hart at the SG spot helps the defense, and it saves IQ to run the second unit. Can IQ be a starter? I think the answer is a clear yes. Should IQ be a starter on THIS team? As the team is currently constructed, I think he is better used as the 6th man.

Quickley is 6’3 with a 6’8 wingspan. Grimes and Hart are both 6’4. Not sure their wingspans but I don’t think they are any longer than IQ. I just don’t see a huge difference or why Quickley can’t develop into a starter, who also plays backup PG mins when Brunson is out. Similar to a guy like Maxey or Herro, there comes a time where he’s earned his opportunity to become a full time starter. I don’t know if he wants to be a 6th man forever. He is definitely better used as a 6th man now, but I’m talking more in the future.

Does he accept a bench role going forward?

Does he want to play 35 minutes a night?

Will he accept $20MM?

IF the magic come calling is Franz, Paulo, Fultz, Suggs and Carter the better play for him long term as starter?

Need to keep him by any means necessary. They need to pay everyone and figure it out later because the team isn't getting old any time soon and we need these guy's growing together.

For the record, Quickley would have to play the 2023-2024 season on the Knicks.

The accept the one-year qualifying offer and play out the 2024-2025 on the Knicks.

Then sign with the Magic in the summer of 2025 as an unrestricted free agent, despite the Knicks have the ability to offer him a better contract than the Magic.

Then play the next four seasons in Orlando, FL.

Good summary, I think lots of folks are forgetting about the qualifying offer for 2024-25 season. In summer of 2025, Knicks would have IQ's bird rights and be able to offer 5 years at higher % increases than the 4 year deal other teams could offer.

FYI

Grimes wingspan is 6' 8"

J Hart is 6' 9"

IMO Quickly will eventually be a starter somewhere.

Hopefully he’s a starter here eventually. Grimes and hart off the bench. I get we don’t mess with what works now, but feel like eventually there’s another level for Quickley to reach as a starter.
