I am sure our front office has been thinking about this for a while now. My answer is two way players. I don't mean necessarily trading for one or even drafting one. We have a couple of guys in the starting lineup that are two way. RJ for sure is one. Everyone else is kind of one way or another. Brunson and Randle are offense oriented but they aren't exactly a minus on D. MRobinson is all D and Fournier is all O. So, if we replace Fournier with Grimes we get a huge boost on D while not really losing much on O. That's a no-brainer. Robinson will have a bigger impact on O with a real PG in place. My thinking is our PF position is the biggest question mark at this point. Is Randle ready for a different role? While sprinting back on D? Not sure. Maybe Obi can show us some defensive chops? Probably not.
What do you think is our biggest need atm? Maybe some continuity and giving a chance for our guys to gel?

20 regular season games. Let's see what they play like with a real deal PG before making any other moves or prognosis.

I think we need chemistry and development! We need guys to get into motion, for the ball to move. If that happens, and we can get guys like RJ to take a next step, we will be in good shape.

In addition to 2 way players- outside shooting is still needed- you can never have enough.

Needs?

1. A development coach and not a win now coach.
2. Fire Thibs
3. Trade vets
4. Play yoots

If Thibs would’ve played the yoots significant mins, maybe ainge accepts our trade. But right now nobody knows what we have. Grimes IQ and Obi needs minutes. Grimes needs to start.

As much as I was against the hire, still have problems with the way Thibs relies too much on some players at the expense of developing other players. Dont believe Thibs should get anything less than a full season to prove that he's the best choice moving forward as head coach. Thibs has been without a true starting PG since he was hired. Now he has one, like to see what he can do this upcoming season.

Its not a roster that's expected to contend, but with Brunson at PG, the offense will be closer to the D. Make the team more competitive. How competitive should determine Thibs future in NY. Also helps recruit other coaches who might be wary of coaching the Knicks, the drama.

The question the OP raised is a good one. I have my suspicions of where we will need help. But we wont really know until Brunson knows his teammates, their tendencies in a game. As well seeing who came back a better player, who regained their form after an off-season, by their standards.

Other Than Brunson,
NBA teams has seen nearly the BEST of rest of Current Knicks roster: Randle, Grimes, Obi, etc

Unless we /you're thinking OBI , GRIMEs can become allstars (not superstars) The only optimism for upside is RJ and OBI ?

I am not yet sold on Cam whom wants out NY, was recent rumor.

So we're supposed to feature NBA pro Knick team with RJ, Brunson, Randle with possible upsides (TBD) of OBI and Grimes.
I don't see the AllStar leadership for any players mentioned yet on the team perhaps other than Brunson.

J.Brunson will have boatload of NBA and NY pressure on him this season. Team work in progress? perhaps
Stars or talent good enough to compete ? I am not too sure about that yet.

If the closest thing to Allstars we got is Brunson (R.J. , Randle) the talents behind these three players gotta be tremendous which it aint.
Randle is already going the other way until he gets out of New York. RJ Is injury prone. NOT a good beginning foreseen for J Brunson "WELCOME TO KNICKERBOCKER LAND"

I hate defending Thibs but most of his staff is developmental coaches. In fact I am pretty sure he does all the actual in game coaching, the assistants give players notes, and then the assistants jobs is mostly player development.

It’s one of the reasons as annoying as Thibs can be, you have to give him credit the youth have all shown development. This is off course post Fiz where RJ and Dennis Smith have both made comments about how the assistants made their shots worse.

This is how I think it happens too.

If I had to guess the biggest issues will be the spacing glut of having three left hand dominant players in Brunson, Randle, and RJ which will see them have RJ play with the bench youth more. If that happens it might be a problem because RJ is also the best wing defender on the roster.

So long story short I do think Fournier is traded for a better two way player (Kuzma, Harrison Barnes, or Jerami Grant), but that’s only if they see after 20 games a wing defender is needed to make RJ minutes more spreadable and cut back on the glut with the starters.

If RJ takes a step forward in his level of play, and Randle is an effective player from the midrange and is a threat from 3 ( 34 percent ) with a steady Brunson, team can surprise with our bench and some two way play from Grimes. Team can really surprise and be top 7.

The majority of the Eastern Conference teams has been improving their team the past two seasons.
Last season 10 East teams finish the season playing above .500 ball.

The Knicks 2022-23 starter trio backcourt of Brunson, Fournier, and Barrett will have problems winning games and outperforming the majority of the teams in the Eastern Conference. And if coach Thibs offensive strategy are like last season the Knicks starter trio will keep us at the bottom of the Atlantic Division again.
Knicks .. Brunson, Fournier, Barrett VS
Celtics .. Smart, Brown, Tatum
Brooklyn .. Ben, Kyrie, Harris
Philly .. Maxey, Harden, PJ Tucker
Raptors .. VanVleet, Trent Jr., Anunoby

I'm starting to have more faith and confidence in the creative effort we get from the duo of D.Rose & Quickley chemistry with Obi Toppin, and maybe Reddish (stepping-up) to out-perform most of the Knicks opponents starter & bench lineups. For two seasons we wanted Obi Toppin to recieve more minutes a game, because of the excitement and chemistry the 2nd unit lineup brang to the court .. having D.Rose, Quickley, Burks, Obi, and Taj Gibson.

This is the key point to understanding this season. There will 2 or 3 Western teams with 55+ wins because both the Spurs and Jazz have decided to join the Thunder and Rockets in tanking, but in the East almost every team is aiming for the playoffs. Maybe the Hornets take a step back but if Noel can regain his game, he and Burks will make the Pistons much better with locker room leadership. Ivey will also be a big plus. Philly- better. Cavs and Hawks- better. Heat- Oladipo is a big x Factor. Only Orlando Indiana and Washington look weaker but they won't be rolling over. A .500 record in the East will be tough. I don't see any team outside of Philly winning more than 50 games.

The flip side is, some teams in the East will hit the trade deadline significantly below expectations. That means there's a potential for someone to cut bait and make a run for Wembanyana. There will be significant players on the market for assets at a much lower price than Mitchell.

The Knicks have a lot of good but not great players. Trade a player at any position plus a few draft assets for a great one. Don't ignore defense. That's what I didn't like about the trade for Mitchell that didn't happen.

1. RJ is not injury prone. I don't know where you got that idea from. He started 72 games in 20/21 and 70 in 21/22.
2. They seen the best of Grimes and Obi? Obi has only played 2 years in the NBA and has already improved drastically since his rookie season. Don't know how we could have seen the best of him when he averaged only 17 minutes per game and that was boosted by us sitting Randle the last few games of the season and the games Randle was out for Covid.

Grimes was a rookie who did not get playing time early and once he starting getting his feet wet got that knee injury and never looked the same again for the rest of the season. Not sure how anyone can see the best of a player when they only played their rookie year.

I agree with you on Cam. I am not sold on him but we need to give him a chance since his contract is up after this season. We have to know what he can do or we just flushed a 1st round pick down the drain to get him.

The team is fine on the leadership front. I don't agree with some of his decisions but Thibs got this group to give hustle, effort and no drama. The exception being Randle. Brunson will only help in this area.

I agree with you on the Randle topic. He is one of our major issues.

I also don't think you can judge this years team on last year. We had no PGs last year. Countless game we had a huge lead that vanished once clutch time came. Brunson should help us win some of those games. Rose is too injury prone to rely on to be our only PG. Quick is a PG now too but playing the point did not click for him until the end of the season last year so I did not count him.

I am want to see a lineup of Brunson, Grimes, RJ, Toppin, and Robinson. That is our best offensive and defensive line-up. It will probably take most of the season, but eventually, Thibbs will realize this fact. Thus, our biggest need is trading Randle and Fournier.

I understand wanting to move Randle because Obi is blocked, but we don’t need to move Fournier. Grimes can still start and Fournier can play more as a backup wing/ SF. He’s still our best shooter and can cook second units and win us some games. I’ll be honest, I like Fournier off the bench at SF better than Reddish. If you move Randle, Toppin becomes the PF and Reddish becomes the backup PF. So that’s the only player who is blocking those opportunities. Fournier isn’t blocking anyone. He’s a valuable shooter off the bench in an ideal situation.

C Mitch/ Hart
PF Toppin/ Reddish
SF Barrett/ Fournier
SG Grimes/ IQ
PG Brunson/ Rose

This is what most people should want from a player development perspective. Randle won’t be moved though anytime soon. The best version of this team still likely involves him when he’s at his best.

Obi can't hit the 3 or pass, how are you going to put him on the court with Brunson and Robinson who also like to operate in the paint? I think anyone hoping the Knicks trade Randle and Fournier is delusional. Randle is still the best player on the Knicks and Fournier was top 4 in the league in 3PM. Randle went along to the Mitchell/ Brunson interview with WWW. It doesn't make sense to replace them with more limited players like Cam and Obi.

If you look at his game log, he shot very well in games he played more than 20 minutes.

If you look at his shot chart, he shoots well from certain places and poorly from others. Just need to put him in a position to succeed and give him an opportunity.

You know I gonna spin wit it
