This is a funny sidebar from the Voice article (link's on the front page), looking at our picks in the 90's in light of who we could have had in their place:

1990 drafted:
Jerrod Mustaf (17)
coulda had: Jayson Williams (20)

1991 drafted:
Greg Anthony (12)
coulda had: Dale Davis (13)

1992 drafted:
Hubert Davis (20)
coulda had: Latrell Sprewell (24)

1993 No pick

1994 drafted:
Monty Williams (24)
and Charlie Ward (26).
coulda had: Wesley Person (23).

1995 No pick

1996 drafted:
John Wallace (18),
Walter McCarty (19),
and Dontae Jones (21).
coulda had:
Jermaine O'Neal (17).

1997 drafted:
John Thomas (25).
coulda had: Marc Jackson (38).

1998 No pick

1999 drafted:
Frederic Weis (15)
coulda had: Ron Artest (16).

2000 drafted:
Donnell Harvey (22).
coulda had: Jake Tsakalidis (25).

2001 No pick

In a couple cases, such as '94 and '96, the author assumes we could have easily traded down to the indicated spot, which in both cases seems likely enough. While the sentimental choice for biggest blunder (talent taken relative to talent passed up) would have to be '99, given that Weis actually has negative value as opposed to Artest's modest, but improving talents. For my money, though, '92 may have done us in. Can you imagine a young Sprewell plugged into John Starks' role on our contending teams of the mid-90's? He's obviously just as capable as Starks of going 0 for 17, but still, it would've given us a much-needed athlete on those brute squads, someone who could have stuck with Jordan as well as anyone in the league. Instead, we got Hubert Davis, who for all his pure form didn't seem to have a competitive bone in his body. It's actually amazing we passed up the opportunity to max him out (although we made up for it with his spiritual heir, Allan Houston).

Considering very few of these happened on Layden's watch, it seems he's just carrying on a burgeoning NY tradition of pissing away opportunities. You know, something like Chris Childs and $3M for Danny Fortson two years ago...naturally, we held back on getting serious about him until we could lose a potential lottery pick in the bargain. We wouldn't want to stumble ass-backwards into a quality player in the draft, after all.

It shows how dumb our management is...

I can understand why we drafted Weis, he is 7-3 after all. But picks like John Thomas or drafting Harvey and then trading him were just stupid moves. Didn't we pick DeMarco Johnson in 98'???

I never understood why we took those three small forwards in '96. If i'm not mistaken, we could have had Derek Fisher and Jermaine Jones in that draft along with maybe John Wallace. We couldn't have had O'Neal though because he was taken a pick ahead of our first pick. We also did get DeMarco Johnson in the second round of the '98 draft, but he didn't stay around for long.
