Fournier has been madly inconsistent, but if what we saw last game where he can be a steady 15-18 ppg guy and shoot it well from outside, he will still be earning his contract. If feels like so much money, but when you look at recent comps like Bogdanovic, Bertans, Duncan Robinson, and Buddy Hield for example, that 3pt sniper at the wing is getting paid no matter what. Fournier, for what he lacks, has generally been better than these guys without digging too much into the advanced metrics. He’s still averaging 14 ppg and shooting 39% from 3pt. It’s just a tough thing to look at Fournier, outside of his Boston games, and not see a guy failing to meet expectations of that contract. But we can’t fault the front office for paying a player under age-30 that does what he does. We just need him to show up more consistently. Of course the ideal way to build a roster is to identify shooters in the middle of the draft like Bane, Grimes, Duarte etc and save the big bucks for the stars, but for now I think I’ll try to level my expectations for what Fournier brings compared to the contract he signed, as long as we start to see a little more consistency. He’s much closer to the going rate than he is a sunk cost.
